volquartsen summit action potential?

Looking at starting a new 22lr project and was looking for other avenues than the 455, tikka, ruger. A buddy had a pws summit and it seemed interesting. Just find out Volquartsen improved/took it over.

Granted a proper build with a bolt action spec chamber, lilja/shilen barrel, bedded in say a mcmillan A5 is this action capable of hanging with a equally built 455?

Haven't been able to find too much on it or full pws builds.

I would imagine a custom made action will be superior to any of the factory ones you mentioned. But the fact that I rarely, if ever, hear anything about this action, tells me they aren't very popular. Why is that? If they are "better", why aren't more people using them and talking about them. Is it that the CZ is cheaper to start with and people take their time dumping $ into it? I don't know. I'm struggling with the next step for my CZ. Sell it and move on to a vudoo, or invest serious $ into it and keep it for life. I will look more into the Summit, very curious about it.

While the Summit is nice and light weight it does not come with a match grade barrel hindering it's accuracy, but the barrel can be changed out. It works great for squirrel hunting though.

The Summit is awesome. Ridiculously quiet if suppressed since the action stays sealed up. Volquartsen barrels are absolutely "match grade", but if you want to put in your own barrel for more wieght, different profile, target/match oriented, etc., they do offer the stripped action (this is the route I went).

I've been struggling a PWS triggered action I barrelled last year to get it to reliably feed and ignite with both a Fedderson tapered barrel and a factory ruger take-off barrel. Getting the shims correct for barrel spacing to the bolt has been a headache that has not been figured out successfully yet with a lot of failures to feed and light primer strikes. OF the 700 or so rounds I've put through it I have had issues on about 35-40% . Barrel spacing seems to work best with .004-.005" of shims. It has been extremely frustrating build that has not responded to the normal 10/22 fixes. Have the Voquartsen firing pin upgrade kit on order, hopefully that will remedy the light pin strikes and will put a KIDD single stage trigger group since the PWS trigger group wont work with the volquartsen parts. I was very happy with this Fedderson barrel in another 10/22, so it's not a barrel issue.

I really want this to work, a reliable fortner toggle biathlon action has been on my bucket list for a long time and I dont feel like paying close to $4k for an Anschutz. Plus I can use all the 10/22 stocks in various configs that I have. But, this is getting frustrating enough that if the new parts config doesnt work I may just scrap this project and build another 10/22.

There's a reason PWS discontinued it, and Volquartsen picked up the fumble and scored. Heads pacing w/ the shims is no problem on the Volquartsen model, and functioning has been 100% with several ammos

Should probably add that i do all of my own barrel/chambering/smith work. Shims wont be used and i likely won't be using the V barrel lock stuff. Going to get a decent friction fit and then glue it in.

Saw all the drama with the PWS headspacing issues but that seemed to be the only complaint. Figured a custom fitted barrel should fix that.

Just hoping the action would be capable of producing good groups given great parts/fitment

I have had one on order for more than 6 months (ordered in April). Perhaps the reason you don't hear anything is because they aren't shipping. After the initial batch they found that an internal part was wearing excessively and they stopped production. They have since found a new material to fashion the wearing part out of and production is back in swing. I still haven't gotten my action shipped, despite them saying they would be caught up with production at the end of Nov. I just called VQ and they said they would be shipping my receiver on the first or second week of January.

When I wanted to build a straightpull 10-22 action , PWS wasn't making them and Volquartsen allegedly was but I couldn't get one from them....

Like you, I do my own barrel work so I wasn't worried about headspace. I ended up machining a 80% 10-22 and making the reciever a threaded tennon instead of the slip fit v-block. Spun up a GM 22 blank and the thing shoots awesome (cant hit the .25" nrl 22 kyl target every time at 65 yards, prone off bipod with cheap auto match ammo but it averages above 60% every time we take it to the range for multiple shooters, one of whom , wishes his Ruger precision rimfire could hold that tight... not as quiet as a straight pull and not as expensive as a Kidd

I know they are expensive but mine gets shot the most out of any other gun I own. 300 rounds goes by fast when your banging steel plates at 350 yards.

Had a "vudoo" before vudoo was vudoo . Mike did his conversion on my 40x while he was doing his finishing refinements on the Vudoo action. Finally pulling the factory barrel and fitting a Shilen ratchet to it in the next 2 weeks.

A new vudoo isnt ruled out...but figured I'd see what other options were out there I could enjoy a build on. If I was to buy something I just wanted to flat out work as a repeater without having to do anything the Vudoo wouldnt even be a question.

Steve: Been thinking about it but damn they are expensive! A goal of this potential project was to see if I could coax competitive accuracy out of a lesser taken route. The Summit action being fairly new and never even considered when talking about tactical 22lr rifles brought about the interest. The other goal was to keep cost a decent amount under a Vudoo, as mentioned once you get to that price range there is little reason not to just go with a Vudoo when its been tested as the most accurate repeater.

Figured Summit action $500, barrel $325, trigger $200, stock $550 we are at 1600 give or take all in. A Vudoo build will put me at about $2100 once you add stock and trigger on the low side. Fair bit cheaper if accuracy potential is close and only comes down to that 1/4" target hit %. Again...just searching for other potential options.

In NRL22, or other tactical 22 style matches, with my Fortner, I've got time to see what the wind is doing, and/or building a more solid support, all without breaking cheek weld in contorted positions - and I can have 2-3 shots off in the same time as the Vudoo's one. There's been times, nearly every match BTW, when I finished a stage that the bolt rifle guys could not get all their shots off in, me getting the bonus points because I cleaned the stage having 1 or 2 rounds left in the mag, them basically put far enough behind to enable me the win.

Most people don't understand how fast and accurate these Fortners really are, as well as how exceptional the triggers are, and how great they are for positional, especially offhand. It's like having an unfair advantage!

But the V22's are nice for old tech, JK

I built a Kidd 10/22. No Ruger parts except for the clear 10rd. mags. The barrel is a Green Mtn. NM barrel that's been cored out 12" for an integral suppressor monocore baffle, so it's only got 4" of barrel left. It's extremely accurate for what it is, 1MOA maybe a bit better using Geco bolt gun ammo (cycles fine with suppressors and it's lower velocity). I was surprised.

It's by far the best 10/22 I ever used, I wanted a CZ integral bbl. but only Thompson made one and they were out and I wasn't sure if that's what I wanted in the first place. I went with the Liberty Pinnacle 2. The Green Mtn. NM barrel isn't the best, it's a cheaper barrel I think that comes with a Choate stock in those ads, but it seems to be doing the job. If you weren't interested in an integral bbl., then a good, quality barrel from a known bbl. mfg. like Lilja or maybe one of the good cut rifle mfg.'s would turn this rifle into a serious tack driver.

A threaded barrel would be even better no matter what you get. In fact, if you get a threaded barrel there's another receiver mfg. that may be better than Volquartsen and Kidd, I forget the name offhand. They make a good receiver for threaded barrels though, some say the best. I think Kidd will also thread receivers. But I didn't bother with it since the barrel I had wasn't threaded and I didn't wanna go that route, though I maybe should have.

Here's mine with the Kidd receiver, bolt, 1stage trigger, etc. All parts are Kidd. The barrel/integral suppressor is the Green Mtn./Pinnacle 2 and the stock is a Titan. That stock is very comfortable, well made and not too expensive all considered, especially when compared to others costing as much and some costing more. It's the best I've used on one of these for sure, but you have to use their rear tang and not the Kidd one. Scope is a Vortex Viper PST 1-4x in USO rings (I had 'em and they fit). Small Harris bipod. 3/4 size leather shooter sling. This is everyone's favorite to shoot when I bring it out. Only action noise, pretty accurate, very light and comfortable. If you threaded the receiver and installed a quality 18 or 20 inch threaded barrel, it'd instantly be a tack driver.

Still not a lot of posts on the Summit action and builds but I thank a lot of that is do to the bolt linkage problems they had. It wasn't an issue of parts wear but of bending and breaking. My first action had one of the bolt linkage parts bend which in turn opened up the headspace and I actually blew out a magazine. They put a new part in and that one broke after 18rds, this was do to a problem with the material they were using and the annealing process. What they ended up doing was thickening the part at that point which may have been a fix in itself. They also changed material and the annealing process which for me has fixed the problem. I have probably sent 300+ rds down range with no change in headspace and no visible bending or cracks. Sadly it is a cold nasty winter so no real shooting will be done for a couple more months.

I have to say through my whole ordeal with purchasing a action and installing my barrel, trigger and stock myself there has never been one argument about cost of shipping and who is at fault. I think because they know this is there issue they have taken responsibility. I was always given the option of selling it back to them as well. I actually love this action, so quiet to operate. It makes maybe a 1/4 of the noise as my T bolt makes to open and close and the amount of force is next to nothing. I hope I can get the accuracy out of this I want but it is already well within what I call good squirrel rifle accuracy.

this was a decently comprehensive testing of the summit vs kidd vs other 10/22 types. its really helpful. as an aside, i would just stick to the kidd tbh, or the volquartsen 10/22 that isnt the summit. all of the top semi-auto competitors stick to either kidd or VQ semi-auto 1022 and not the summit.

The problem with majorpandemic's review of the PWS (pre-summit) action is that it was being compared to rifles without all other things being equal. If the same trigger, stock, 10/22 barrel were used to compare it to another action (i.e a Kidd classic slip fit), what would be the results? I may well be wrong, but I suspect you might see a slight improvement in consistency with a biathlon style receiver over a semi-auto 10/22.

I've been mulling over building a rifle using the Summit receiver/bolt with a Feddersen barrel and a Kidd 2-stage trigger to compare against my Kidd using the same trigger and similar Feddersen barrel.

Yep. It's compatible with most aftermarket 10/22 stocks, barrels, triggers and 100% with all Ruger components.

I've had a little experience shooting a PWS version a few months ago that one of the NRL22 guys brought to a match. He stated that he'd had a few issues getting it running well. But it was fun to shoot and sparked my interest in the Summit.

I'm looking forward to your feedback texasleftychef. I just put a Summit in my cart to purchase, but think I'll hold off until you have time to report before dropping $900+ on another 10/22 action and trigger.

I built a Kidd about five years ago to shoot with my dad before he died. He went downhill pretty quick so I never did get to really put it through the paces.

The VQ 10/22 on the left is built out of the pieces remaining from his 10/22 that I got him for 60th birthday. He had replaced virtually everything with VQ parts except the shitty Ruger receiver so I just finished it off and put all of his stuff into a stainless VQ receiver and in a Magpul stock.

I mostly built the Kidd with hopes of it competing with his rifle so I could give him some shit about his rifle wouldn’t shoot. It’s not technically a Supergrade but I think is almost the same except it doesn’t have the threaded barrel.

The Summit is an experiment to night hunt suppressed for piglets as I have deep desire to get a couple and roast them in the ground.

Here’s a picture of the Kidd with the VQ and Summit. I’ll do a range report with a bunch of medium grade ammo and as much high end stuff as I can stomach and do a full write up.

I'm looking forward to your experience with the Summit.... especially how the Summit works with the AAP1022 stock. I bought one of the Archangel Precision stocks to use in my next 10/22 build in which I'm inclined to use the Summit action. One of the local NRL22 shooters has the same stock and has issues removing BX-1 mags. From reading in various places, the problem could be tolerances with different receivers causing pressure on the mag well since shimming between the stock and receiver has been reported to correct the problem. I've read where most people have just sanded the mag well to correct the problem.

I actually got the Magpul for the VQ 10/22 because of that issue with the Archangel and the standard 10 round Ruger mags when it was in there. I’ve been sanding mine a little bit but still needs more and maybe shims are better. Would like to hear more about it’s done. It’s for sure a tight fit getting the receiver in there and will require some additional sanding with a Kidd trigger probably too. Mine did. I’d give up on it if I didn’t like the ergos so much and how it looks proper for lack of a better word on a 16.5 inch barrel setup. Not a big fan of the stock and barrel being almost same length. Magpul would have a winner if they made a short version of their 22 stock.

On another forum, I mentioned sanding the mag well and one of the replies stated:

I would not sand the stock. This can be fixed by jamming sandwich toothpicks between the receiver and stock just forward of the magazine well. For a slightly more polished solution, glue pieces of zip-tie to the interior of the stock.

Had one and sold it (PWS version). Had to send it back to get it working right and after they worked on it and bought one of their barrels it seemed to work ok.

One thing to note is that mine wanted to be ran fast and hard (no joke intended).

If I tried to cycle it slow and quiet (like when stalking squirrels) it was likely to not cycle well. Cycling the action vigorously cured the issues.

I bought a Volquartsen Summit rifle from Brownells using one of their %10 codes. Came out to $931. I will shoot it this coming weekend. It has the lightweight THM barrel so I'm not sure how accurate it will be.

I bought the complete, built rifle bc I didn't want to mess with headspace/ shim issues. I was originally offered a Summit action by a fella who had purchased three and built one for himself. He was going thru headspace issues. My original thought was to build it as a heavier competition rifle. Kidd bull barrel, Victor Titan stock, etc. but decided I didn't want a home-brew mess with a headspace issue. And it would be redundant to my CZ455 comp/ trainer so I thought a lighter build would couple with a suppressor well.

I did more or less the same thing so I wouldn’t have to deal with headspace as well. I just got a barreled action but I think the same barrel as you. It’s the carbon wrapped barrel but I don’t think their super light. Person I spoke with said it should do as well as their match barrels at 3/8 @ 50. Time will tell.

Cool thing with these is if something doesn’t work great you can just cannibalize something off anlther gun and see how it does. Only problem is some of the Kidd and VQ stuff fits so tight almost need a jack to remove it.

I've got one from back when it was a PWS:

Kidd Barrel (slight press fit, no V block), Kidd Trigger (now). KKC Stock. Added a Kidd rear tang as well.

Shot NRL22 matches with it for a while, accuracy was never an issue. Fantastic suppressor host (doesn't shit up mags like a 10/22 does).

Mine was out of the 1st run of actions. It was a complete piece of shit when I got it, and had to go back to PWS where they replaced the entire bolt and blessed the magical headspace settings (mine measures like .041... it's pretty tight). It ran for several years in the above configuration.

It's completely down at the moment. The bolt started getting a lot of vertical play in it, which caused it to drag hard on rounds making it feel really clunky. It then developed some feeding issues. I yarded it apart, and the screw that pins the linkage to the top of the action had came loose, allowing the entire bolt assembly to develop some play and droop.

I've fucked around with it for a while, but haven't figured out what to do there to fix it long term. Honestly.... feels like the design is kinda shit in this area. It's a 10-32 (or thereabouts) screw that pins a bushing into the receiver, and the linkage arms pivots around the pinned bushing/screw. It gets only about 2-3 threads of engagement, and unlocking the action (pulling back on the lever) works to unscrew the bushing/screw itself. This of course causes the screw to unscrew/screw itself back in, which just causes the whole lever to flop around. If you tighten the assembly too much, you force the linkage to be wedged together and the whole action is nearly impossible to work. You are in effect hoping/praying that a couple threads w/ loctite on a semi-tight screw can hold things together forever... which they don't.

I think the action is cool, and could be a shooter. The headspace thing is sorta fidgety, but you can figure it out (hint: need less than you probably are used to). The whole linkage attachment assembly is a goat fuck though, and I'm fearful that there very might be a finite lifespan to how long that thing will last without giving you serious issues.

When discussing the Volquartsen Summit action, you often see posts about the PWS built Summit. Yes, the Volquartsen Summit is a licensed design from PWS. But Volquartsen has made some changes to the Summit. The question is did the changes fix the issues with the Summit design?

No. I have looked online, but didn't see a list anywhere. Scott Volquartsen mentions changes here:



I did call Volquartsen and the initial changes also included an upgraded extractor and firing pin. Note that the upgraded firing pin works in the PWS action, but not with the PWS trigger group.

The early Volquartsen Summit receivers had an issue too. In a letter sent out to Summit owners, Scott Volquartsen stated it was a problem with the metal they initially used and the way they heat treated it. They have now thickened the part. I've not seen a lot of feedback since that change.

One other thing to mention is that speculation exists that damage has been done to some Summit receivers by incorrectly shimming barrels to where too much force is required to fully close the bolt thereby damaging the action. Take that for what you will.

I'm still mulling over buying one. Something that gives me pause is the 1-year warranty on the Summit receivers. Given the past issues, Volquartsen aught to extend the warranty if they want to sell them.

I had a PWS Summit for suppressed shooting. I've grown up on 10/22's and loved the concept of the summit with a can. First time hunting with it I kept forgetting to toggle the bolt. Training issue and user error, no doubt. I still sold it and kept shooting my 10/22's. Didn't gain enough to warrant the change for me.

I have an integrally suppressed 10/22 with no Ruger parts. A Pinnacle 2, which is a Green Mtn. NM barrel bored out 12" for a monocore baffle stack with 4" left, a complete Kidd action and single stage trigger and a Titan stock; I topped it off with a 1-4x Vortex Viper PST. I'm guessing it's about 1MOA? It's only been to 25m so far but at that range it just makes a ragged hole. I'm impressed with the accuracy of a Green Mtn. barrel that's been cored out like that actually.

When I was building it, all the advice was stay away from Volquartsen, "they aren't worth it" and look to Kidd (and there's another mfg. too, they do thread in barrels only, can't recall the name but it may be the best receiver actually). If you can thread the barrel in there, do that, if not, well, you know what to do. With the Titan stock you'll be needing the Titan rear tang, the Kidd tang doesn't work so well with that stock.

The difference between this and a stock Ruger are night and day. I have an SBR'd stock 10/22 w/folder and I'm just gonna have to change the trigger in it, I can't stomach that shit anymore after this rifle. It's what a 10/22 SHOULD be. It's also the most fun rifle I own and everybody loves to shoot it when I bring it out. A 4yo got to shoot his first time with his father using it, and a couple anti's have been made to see the light and were talking about making purchases later that evening.

Kidd is where it's at. I didn't splurge for the 2 stage trigger, I wanted to but I didn't. The single stage trigger is actually really nice. But what I may end up doing in the future is to get the 2 stage trigger and put this single stage trigger in that SBR, since I plan on changing that one out anyway.

I have both the PWS Summit and just recently got a Voltquartsen Summit. Other then a rubber grip over the bolt both actions are identical. When I got the PWS it had no barrel, so we used a hammer forged Ruger target barrel to test & play with it. After the first screw on, the bolt had a horrible lockup, it was hard af. After you did close it to open it was tight and clunky. So we decided to adjust headspace, trimmed .007” off the barrel and rereamed the barrel, closing was like silk, opening was amazing also. It shot well, but had constant jams, maybe mags or maybe not enough chamfer on entry.

Then the Volt showed up, stainless action, carbon fiber factory installed barrel. I got to run the toggle and holy fuck, it’s tight af also, once it’s close, you can literally pull the rifles weight before it opens. Still jams, still has firing issues, it’s junk. You’d think for $1400 it would at least function. Sure I can adjust headspace, but i didn’t think I would have to adjust this with a higher end rifle.

Accuracy is good for a squirrel rifle, I’ve run from CCI, SK to Eley. It’s nothing that I’d likely run in a NRL22 match, it doesn’t hold a candle to my CZ much less my Vudoo.

I’m hoping with enough rounds the Volt will loosen up or break the handle to get a refund. Overall I’m saddened this isn’t a great rifle, I had super high hopes to a toggle action 10/22. I could mod everything from a 10/22 but keep my son(11) from eating up his college fund in 22 ammo.

The 10/22 is great, there are tons of things you can do to make them way more accurate. I know of some guys threading the receiver to get away from the stress on the 2 screw system, they go to a shouldered system to set headspace. Barrels make a big difference but ammo is crucial. My Vudoo with crap ammo will produce 14” groups at 200yds, but with the right ammo it’ll do a tad over 2”.

I was saddened the Summit didn’t perform to the idea I had imagined. Maybe I got a dud but from the people I’ve talked are plagued with the same issues as me.

Finally got the PWS variant to 100% operation--- required barrel shims totalling .006-.007" for the Fedderson barrel, replaced the PWS firing pin, spring and extractor with Volquartsen replacement parts (what they recommend to fix PWS problems with light strikes and extraction issues). Shimming of barrel to point where there is just a little bit of feel on the bolt cam when you overcenter it to close, less than a pound of force when measured with a trigger gauge.

Put 257 rounds through it with the 1st 157 being leftover various rounds from many years that had accumulated in the bottom of the range bag. Really it was a real mixture of HV, SV, thunderturds, Federal, Winchester, Eley, Sk, CCI, Aguila and what not. I was just trying to establish functional reliability of the action. The good news is the volquartsen parts and additional barrel shimming took it from about 40% reliability to 100% for feeding, ignition and extraction. I did suffer about 22 "harder than normal to feed/close bolt" with the off brands, noticeably the federal and remington crap.

I then switched over to 100 rounds of SK+ and ALL feeding issues went away and surprise surprise, accuracy was a lot better too. The lube SK uses really made a difference for this action. Rifle is just as quiet as a bolt action with the suppressor, this is what I wanted from the beginning.

Targets 1-5 and above sighters were scope zero and functional testing, did notice that any HV rounds pulled high left of POA. Yardage 25 from the bench with bag, winds variable 0-8 MPH out of 7-8 oclock. Targets 11-15 were all SK+ ammo. Ignore Target 18 as it was standing offhand unsupported, just wanted to see how the rifle balanced in offhand shooting.





However I have decided to stick with my other .22's at this point and pare down some of my stuff so this receiver is going on the "for sale" pile. I'm glad I finally got it sorted out, but the Toggle action isnt for me, I'd rather have a semi-auto or true bolt action. I'll make a fellow SH member a hell of deal for the action with the PWS trigger pack and volquartsen parts.

I built a Kidd about five years ago to shoot with my dad before he died. He went downhill pretty quick so I never did get to really put it through the paces.

The VQ 10/22 on the left is built out of the pieces remaining from his 10/22 that I got him for 60th birthday. He had replaced virtually everything with VQ parts except the shitty Ruger receiver so I just finished it off and put all of his stuff into a stainless VQ receiver and in a Magpul stock.

I mostly built the Kidd with hopes of it competing with his rifle so I could give him some shit about his rifle wouldn’t shoot. It’s not technically a Supergrade but I think is almost the same except it doesn’t have the threaded barrel.

The Summit is an experiment to night hunt suppressed for piglets as I have deep desire to get a couple and roast them in the ground.

Here’s a picture of the Kidd with the VQ and Summit. I’ll do a range report with a bunch of medium grade ammo and as much high end stuff as I can stomach and do a full write up.

Hey Guy's..... looking at some new Iron. How is the Summit shooting? Does it use standard Ruger BX magazines?
What is the better bbl. Volquartsen or KIDD? I have a bunch of bolt guns and wanted a semi-auto. I just bought a Kriss Defiance and am working out some small issues. It is well built but I want bolt action accuracy. I put it in my .223 lower that has a Geissele Single-Stage Precision (SSP) trigger in it already. My stock Kriss trigger was 5lb. 13oz. and is just a standard mil-spec trigger in all respects. Sorry.... I shall stop now as I have gotten off topic. Lastly...my pal Brittany on vacation.
