I've decided to do a slight rebuild of my Savage 93FV Magnum over the winter and need some assistance. The build is on a budget but I need a good scope.I wanted a scope that had turret knobs with no covers, 6-24 (or close to) and something smaller than 50mm but it proved harder to find in my budget. The two scopes I looked at were the Vortex Crossfire 6-24x50mm and the Mueller 8-32x44mm. I've read good reviews about Vortex and a lot of guys suggest the Crossfire for rimfire shooting. Problem is that I worry that the 50mm will look too big on my rifle. The Mueller also seems to have good reviews and I like the knobs on it but I don't like that fact that it is so long. I figured either way I would have something about each scope I was unsure about so the choice boils down to which scope is better. So any help would be appreciated. Other scopes in the $200 area can be mentioned too.

For mounting I was considering doing a Leapers UTG .83" Rail Riser with Weaver Tactical Rings. I like the tactical look so that was the idea about the riser attached to the scope mounts already on the rifle. If that doesn't happen I'll be using an EGW 20MOA rail with higher Weaver rings. Hopefully this will work...

Re: Vortex Crossfire: Need opinions on setup

I have the crossfire 6-24x50 on a Mark II BTVSS. It is definitely long and a huge objective, the optics are quite astounding though for a scope I paid $99.99 for.

If it helps, I tried Weaver 6-hole Picatinny medium rings with an EGW 20moa base and it just didnt clear. I probably shouldve just gone with a flat EGW base and it wouldve cleared.

It does look a little ridiculous on there, but it does its job, and its not a rifle I take hunting so its fine with me.

Re: Vortex Crossfire: Need opinions on setup

I appreciate the help. I'm leaning towards the Mueller at this point. I'd rather have a longer scope then a really large objective. I saw a picture on RFC that had a Swift 8-32x50 which is 16.9" and it didn't bother me. The Mueller is 16.25" so I think it'll be fine. I'll have it back slightly for eye relief so I think it will look ok. Mueller is usually a decent scope right?

Re: Vortex Crossfire: Need opinions on setup

I have the crossfire on my Ruger 7mm magnum but I also have a cheek rest for the added height due to the 50mm objective.
I also paid $99 when I got it from SWFA who still gets them in at that price. I bench tested the scope and it tracked perfect and looks pretty good for only having a 1" tube. I wanted a cheap scope and for the money it has better glass than my low end leupolds. JMHO
I have heard bad things about Mueller but never tried one myself.

Bad things huh? I'm trying to do some research on it but every review I'm finding on rimfireshooting.com, opticstalk, and pafoa all say good things about it for the price it sells at. Its tough to choose this stuff.

Can either of you guys posts pictures of your rifles with the Vortex on there?

Re: Vortex Crossfire: Need opinions on setup

I love my crossfire 6-24x50 for $115 after shipping I was amazed with the scope, on my Savage 93r17 FVSS I have only shot 100yd plinking so far as I just got it but I can easily see the tiny .17hmr bullet holes at that range! which is why I wanted it. I zeroed it in and my scope is only 1/8 inch of my barrel with extra high mounts. with the lowest setting @ x6 I had no problem shoting birds and other critters at ranges as close as 15yds or so. it is not the quickest scope as the focus is in the front and fine focus on the eye piece but it is a steal @ $99 all day with the warranty!

Re: Vortex Crossfire: Need opinions on setup

Put a Vortex Crossfire on my .308 Win. Remington 700 PSS the other day and under recoil the groups creep upward. I would see the elevation knob move off position after random shots. Emailed SWFA about it and hope to get it exchanged.

You can send it to us and we can get it taken care of. Our CS dept phone number is 800-426-0048.

The biggest problem I see here is that you are putting way too much mag on a 17HMR. save your $$$ a little longer and put a Viper or something in that range on it. FWIW, I have already killed off two Crossfires on mild recoiling rifles... Vortex CS is bar none though. they go the extra mileS!

Re: Vortex Crossfire: Need opinions on setup

I recently got a Crossfire from SWFA after looking through one a friend has. The eyebox on his was great and I was sold on it. Mine is very unforgiving in eye relief, I have maybe 1" of decent sight picture looking through mine. My friends scope has a lot more eye relief than mine, so I guess mine may have to go back. other than that, the scope is very clear at all the power settings and the adjustments are pretty crisp. Not bad at all for $119 shipped.

oh damn.....just what I need is zero to move and make me out to suck at shooting even more than I do now.

Re: Vortex Crossfire: Need opinions on setup

I have the vortex 6-24 on a m&p15-22 and it looks fine. In fact, it looks a little bad a$$ so don't worry about how it appears with the 50mm objective. The scope, at least for rimfire, is unbelievable and at $99, cannot be beat

Re: Vortex Crossfire: Need opinions on setup

My Dad busted two Crossfires on a .243, Vortex CS promptly took care of him. I think they are perfect for a .22.

Re: Vortex Crossfire: Need opinions on setup

I recently purchased a Vortex Crossfire 6-24X50 for my Marlin 917V (17HMR.) I simply could not be more happy with the purchase. The clarify, objective, eye relief, magnification, and overall value that scope brings to the bench is amazing. Even more impressed that I didn't have to spend more than the rifle to buy it!

High five to Vortex on that Crossfire model and to SWFA for selling it. Shortly after that purchase I bought a Strikefire for my 10/22!
