What say you Hide?

It's going on a Remington 5r in 308. I will be shooting out to 600 yards, and occasionally 1,000. I do have a fair amount of experience shooting bolt guns, but nothing modern (lots of local milsurp battle rifle comps).

About $1,100 leftover after the 5r. I can expand this by making another sale (which would be a gun I don't want to sell... Ed Brown, one of my Swede's, etc), but only if there's a pretty decent upgrade.

Is there a big enough upgrade going from a Viper to a NSX to make it worthwhile? Similarly, if I have to sell my Ed Brown I will hopefully have enough to get a F1 or Razor... again... if the returns are worth it.

I understand, Pareto on the returns, etc... But I just wanted to get some feedback on it. My sense is that the super serious people will say ALWAYS get the better glass, while others may say the NSX will do or the viper will suffice. Even still, the proper answer probably is relative to how serious I am.

But all that not withstanding, what say you Hide? Is it worth it?

Get the Viper?
Get the NSX and sell a medium value rifle/pistol ($300-500)
Get the Razor/F1 and sell the Ed Brown pistol (which has only 150 rnds through it as well...)?

As a side note, I was planning on Badger Ordnance 20moa base... any suggestions on rings?

Right now, target punching and hunting. But I am planning on getting into some competitions down the ways.

Re: Vortex or Nightforce?

Keep a eye on the "for sale" section here on the hide and also over at LongRangehunting.com for some good deals on a used NightForce NSX. I think there are atleast 2 of them for sale right now over on longrange and prolly 1 or 2 for sale on here also. You mentioned the F1 and the Razor so Im just going to assume that you are wanting a FFP? If so then thats gonna limit what you can find in the used section, but they still pop up from time to time. Personally if it was me, id find a used NSX 5.5-22X50 for a good price and snag it, or check at Eurooptics to see if the sale is still on for $1475 for the NSX.

+1 for the Nightforce

Very very solid scopes that can take a beating and come out on top.

They offer massive elevation as well, so in the future should you decide to shoot past 1000m you dont have to stress about running out of turns on your turrets

Bold statement. Out of curiosity, how many other scopes have you used for more than a couple pulls of the trigger?

Re: Vortex or Nightforce?

Yes it is a bold statement. I have sat behind plenty of scopes from S&Bs, Premiers, USOs, NF, Vortex, Leupolds,IOR, Swaroski and Zeiss. For the features, track record that NF offers, and the price point it comes it at, they are extremely hard to beat. How often do you ever hear of a NF going down? Rarely do you ever.

Re: Vortex or Nightforce?

Mine can go down right now. I wish someone would trade me a USO for it since they are so freaking spectacular. I am just glad to see a comparison with something nightforce really compares to like Vortex. Best thread I have seen in a while.

not a single person wants to trade for this NXS. I bet they would if I wanted to trade for a Vortex. Looks like a good comparison to me.

+1 for VORTEX

Re: Vortex or Nightforce?

Yeah, they are proven. No doubting that. I just wish they'd come to the table with a few more options/models.

Re: Vortex or Nightforce?

Have used the F1 currently giving the Razor a run...(time will tell a bit on the Razor)

YOU will not go wrong with the Nightforce. Vortex is listening to our community and if the rubber is really hitting the road...they look to be the one to beat.

Re: Vortex or Nightforce?

We will be getting some of the Vortex scope so I have not tested one out. I'm really look forward to getting some in stock.

Nightforce Scopes have been one of the most reliable scopes we have ever sold. I would recommend a Nightforce.

Re: Vortex or Nightforce?

Neoinarien, I've posted alot on here about the Vortex viper I have 6.5 to 20 I'm currently waiting on the pst. Like I have said before I love my Viper so far. Now only time will tell it has great glass for the money and so far is tough. I really use my equipment. My buddy was using my gun with the viper on it and dropped it hard. Held my breath put it on paper and zeroed where it was before. Like I said though time will tell. Just sent my loopy mark 4 in today point of impact is never the same and windage knob was mushy. Just waiting for april. SWFA gave me a great deal.

Re: Vortex or Nightforce?

My vortex viper 2-7 power on my 45-70 is good for the short distance I'm shooting. The optics is clear and I don't have to make many adjustments. The scope can handle the stout recoil. However, eye relief doesn't remain constant when dialing more or less power. I usually keep my viper set at 4 power. But I'm shooting max at 200 yards.

Now my Nightforce NXS is fantastic. You have to compare apples to apples. Unless you are going to compare the NXS with the new Vortex Razor you will be spinning your wheels.

You won't be disappointed with a NXS. You need to look through some other top notch brands to compare for yourself. If your looking for a great solid scope for your rig to shoot out to 600 yards then you will find the USO ST-10X very hard to beat. But I've heard the new Super Sniper scopes are a real bargain for the money also.

Good luck on your choice. PAT.

Re: Vortex or Nightforce?

I had the pleasure of checking out the 1-4 vortex viper PST and granted I didnt get to throw it on a gun and test it I was really impressed. As long as it is as good as it feels and looks I would put it straight up against the NXS 1-4. The reticle in my opinion is one of the better designed/user friendly reticles I have seen in a 1-4 and the glass was every bit as clear and crisp as NF or Trijicon.

So if it is any indication of the higher mag PST's I would wait for one of those.
