Vortex PST for rimfire

I'm torn between the 4-16 FFP and 6-24 FFP. I use it mostly for target/bench/prone/varmint hunting, and the 6-24 would make spotting and confirming tiny little .22 holes a lot easier. I doubt I would ever use this rifle in a "dynamic" role, or closer iin than 25yds. You see any major downsides to 6-24 for these purposes? Any of you guys have one on a precision trainer .22?

here's the only downside I can come up with......
I got a 6-20 viper on my 10/22 and it wont really focus down to 50 yds. I had a Crossfire on it first, which was awesome focus wise as it'd focus down to about 25 yds or closer even. But alas the crossfires have issues so I upgraded to the viper. It'll be hard to find a good quality optic that has the ability to focus down really close with that kind of magnification range.
Other than that you'll have a winner.

No, but I do have 6-24pst, its gonna be a lot of scope on a small gun.

I'll just add my two cents worth. I put on my Cooper 57M in 22lr a Sightron a 6-24x50. I am 62 and eyes are not the best anymore. With the Sightron I can just about 'reach out and feel' the 22lr hole at 50 yards. I have yet to need anything more than 15 or so magnification.

When I go to the range some times it is hard to decide between the Cooper and AI.

I have a PST 4-16x50 FFP on my 10/22 and love it. It's a great scope for the money and I have no problem spotting my target hits at 150yds on a bright day. Don't know how well 22 holes would show up beyond that as thats the farthest I've shot it. Ultimately it'll go on an AWC Ultra II (also 22LR).

Go with the 6-24x as it is always better to have more magnification on the high end than less magnification on the low end for a target rifle application.

I'll echo what EWOAF said regarding focus. I have the Viper 6.5-20x44 mildot on my .22 FV-SR and the magnification is excellent but it doesn't focus too well below 50yd.

i run a 4-16 pstffp/moa on my cz. i can not think of a better scope. i think if you get 6x on the bottom with a 22 you will regret it

i run a 4-16 PST/FFP on my ruger 10/22 and a leupold 3.5-10x40 mk4 m3 on my CZ 452.


For my The semi auto merits higher power due to faster correction shots at longer ranges whereas the bolt gun just isn't fast enough most times to follow up at the longer ranges, at least on game. Target shooting may be a different thing.

The other thing I like about the mk4 is you can get out to 300 yards on one turn of the dial. unlike the PST. but they are both good choices for a rimfire.

Right now I have had limited range time. However the times I have been shooting I placed the target stand at 50 yards. Needless to say I can count the edges on each hole.

To bad you are not closer to me I'd tell you try out my rig yourself. Nothing beats up close and personal to see if you like something.

I like using this rifle as a "spotting scope" since I pretty much always have it at the range. The extra 8x of the 6-24 is tempting.
Really my biggest concern with either scope is the parallax only going down to 50yds. I realize that is approximate, but still.

I have had the 6.5-20x50 vortex viper before and I currently have a 6-24x50 FFP PST. both are great scopes, but as other have said they are not good for focusing closer than 50 yards. You really have to turn down the magnification alot to focus closer than that.

i can focus my 6-24 PST down to about 10 yards in the house here if that's in consolation for you. I just took it out for the first time over the weekend out to around 510 yards and it did great, a little more sensitive to eye position than my Zeiss conquest but less sensitive that my buddys vortex viper pst 4-16 as odd as that may sound

edit: it will focus but the cross hair goes out of focus so never mind

I have the Vortex 6.5-20x44 Viper on my Cooper and it makes it much easier to see POI at 200 yds. I rarely, if ever shoot this rifle < 100 yds. The PST version is defintely "nice to have" but I only paid ~250 for my Viper.

I bought a PST 6-24x50 for my 30 WM 5R and while i was having some work done to it, I put the scope on a 10/22 I had jus put together...well, I never took it off. I love it on there...Its a great training scope.

So, I got to use a friend's Vortex Viper PST 4-16 MIL/MIL FFP today, and I liked it a lot. I had no problem focusing down to 25yds. I'm not sure about my ability to spot hits past 100 yds. The eye box was pretty unforgiving, particularly at 16 power.

its more forgiving than the leupold 4-14x50 FFP m3. Compare other FFP's in its power range... you'll see the PST is a hell of a scope for the money.
