My Dad is about to Merry Christmas himself a new spotting scope. We do want a Mil Reticle, which in the Vortex means the 30x eyepiece, and on the Gold Ring a $400 trip to Leupold for the TMR. Between these two, which is going to best for mostly range, ELR work, with maybe a bit of LR hunting? Also on the Vortex, angled or straight? I picture sitting in a chair or on the tailgate behind a tripod.

Also open to advise on tri-pods that will adjust easily, have no experience with different brands.

    Thanks

Well, after a ton of research I think I got it figured out. He is going to get the Vortex Razor which will be fine for him, doesn't do much hunting or any field matches, and I will probably do a gold ring eventually and have the TMR put in it. He will have the 30x MRAD eyepiece, and the 60x for shooting LOOONG and I will have the field one we can pack around on hunts/matches.

Thanks Jason, appreciate it. Was yours an HD Gold Ring or just the standard one? I think for Pop's the Razor will be sweet.

Vortex is the right call. Try to borrow the Leupold before you invest in one, I wasn't that impressed with mine and sold it shortly after my first week long hunt with it.

Standard. Wasn't so much the glass quality as the eye relief, exit pupil, eyebox...whatever. Just a pain in the ass to use.

I have an Angled Vortex Viper HD 15-45x65 Angled I'll make you a deal on if you want something smaller than the big razor for the field.

Thanks but I want a reticle in it.

I purchased the Vortex Hd 20-60 x 85 just long range shooting. It was my first spotting scope. I took it to my range and got it set up on the bench fired at 300 yards at a shoot and see target and could barely make out where my group was on the target. Then I backed up to 200 yards, I could then see well enough to use the mil reticle. My problem was I could also make out well enough to use the mil reticle in my SWFA 5-20 SS scope, I could also make out my 300 yard group better with my SS scope. I returned the Vortex to SWFA.
To be fair I do live in Ga and it was 85 degrees and 80% humidity so the mirage was pretty bad!

Angled is for prone shooting primarily. Really hurts your neck standing or sitting at a bench after awhile. I have the Golden ring standard and love it, but I've never tried a nicer one to compare it to. Vortex has a good reputation I'm sure you'll be happy with it
