Last few years I’ve come real close to pulling the trigger (no pun intended) and invest in some long range gear. Came REAL close last spring but the itch is kicking in again. Main goal is just to set up a gun to hunt with but that I can also learn the basics of long range shooting. Gun will be a Tikka CTR 6.5 CM and I had about decided to go with an Athlon Ares ETR. However I just stumbled into a used Vortex Razor HD Gen 1 5x20x50. I can get it for $850 with a set of Vortex Rings included. Have looked through it appears crystal clear, no dings dents, etc. Really good cosmetic condition!

At $850 is this a good deal for the Vortex and rings or should I pony up and get the Athlon Ares ETR. I’d save enough on the difference between the Vortex and the Athlon Ares ETR to get a Kestrel just curious to get some input on Vortex. Thanks in advance!!

I'd get the Razor at that price, its more of a tried and proven optic.... but its a pretty heavy scope, so keep that in mind in regards to your hunting game plan.

I just sold that exact scope, with Vortex PMR rings... I'll just say that $850 with rings included is a Real Good Deal. And, if there does turn out to be something wrong with it, Vortex will make it right.

I’d say that’s a good deal. I think it’s an underrated scope.

I’ve had one since shortly after it was released. It’s been on couple of rifles and currently sits on my 22lr trainer because it has huge elevation range.

Its a GREAT deal but after pondering it a bit I think I'm going to pass. Didn't even have a Gen 1 on my radar. Walked into a gun store and there it sat and peeked my interest. Looked at some higher end scopes later this afternoon including an Athlon Ares ETR and I think I'm going to keep saving my pennies. May even skip the Athlon as I REALLY like the GEN 2 Razors. Big and bulky but I like it. Even though I'm a newbie on this scene I've got a couple decades of photography experience working with VERY VERY high end lenses so I'm a bit picky when it comes to glass.

Really appreciate the input!

Check out the Athlon Cronus BTR too. I was all set to get a Razor Gen2 last year and took a chance on the Cronus since the reticle really looked good to me. I ended up another one shortly after.

You can find them here used for $1100-$1300 which saves a couple hundred bucks over a used Razor Gen2. I’ve had great luck buying lightly used scopes on the EE forum here.

I have a Razor Gen I 5-20x50 EBR-2C (MRAD) scope on my AIAT with Spuhr bases/rings. I have it so well dialed in with .308 Win 175gr FGMM that I'm reluctant to change to the Razor Gen II 4.5-27x56 that I picked up through Experticity. The glass is great, the function is flawless and I've made hits out to 1,250 yards with it with no trouble seeing IPSC targets out to that distance.
