Vortex Solo monocular

I got a 8x25 on a silent auction a few years ago and really tried to like it/ come up with uses for it. Best one I’ve found is in the back pocket of my truck seat where my 2 year old can reach and use it. I do think they made improvements since then, and I would like to look through a 10x36, but the one I have is nearly useless when compared to the advantage of low-mid level binoculars.

BUT, even the one I have is better than nothing.

I have the T/R version with the mil reticle, it's pretty nice. The size and weight beat most small binoculars but it is a little more shaky. It's a nice way to practice using a ranging reticle without pointing a rifle at your neighbors mailbox. The padded case that it comes with isnt very convenient and it could use some lense covers but other than those two criticisms it is a well thought out item.

I think it’s useful for what it is—an economical compact observation device with some ranging features. Can be had for under $100 through their Mil/LE discount onExpert Voice. Kyle Defoor says he has used one as a spotter for his scoped carbine classes.

I found it had a touch less magnification and resolution compared to a 8x Vortex Razor bunting scope I have. With the Solo, resolving 50 yard .223 bullet holes is no problem. By 100 yards I can’t see .223 holes in paper (but I can with the 8x scope).

I agree with the comments above regarding cumbersome soft case and lack of lens caps.

When I originally got mine, it had really fine black specks around the reticle. The debris was annoying, but the monocular was still useable. Vortex was good on CS and sent me a replacement along with a return label.

I loved the Solo for quick field use. I think it’s perfect hikes, trucks, etc.

I just picked up the Vortex Recon R/T refurb from AA Optics for $400. I’m like it so far and plan on using it at matches. Very small setup and easy to pack. Have a match next week and can report back after.

I've got a Solo R/T 8x36 I bought about 10 years ago, and never really used it. Just sits in the nylon pouch in a drawer. I guess I should start using it for something. I guess I could keep it in the truck or something? 🤷🏼

I got the Reece Recon one that’s a little nicer with a mil/silhouette ranging reticle. I got it for $240 from euro optic through their vet program and can’t complain. Decent glass roughly equivalent to the Vipers PSTs, small lightweight profile, and useful reticle. Only gripes is the sillouttes are too spaced out so the 600m is awkwardly placed on the side where’s there’s so distortion. Also the lens caps/eyecup kinda blow and pop out constantly
