Rifle Scopes Vortex Viper HST 6-24X50 Parallax

I have a Vortex Viper HST 6-24X50 on a .223 Rem Savage Model 10 Precision Carbine. Today while I was shooting at 435 yards with consistent hits, I realized after about 6 shots that my parallax adjustment was set at 50 yards. I immediately changed it to just over 400 and shot again. After adjusting the parallax I did not touch the elevation or windage before shooting the next round. To my surprise I missed the steel completely. I repeated the shot 2 more times with 2 more misses. I changed the parallax back to 50 yards and fired another 3 round group that all hit steel and were a little less than 1 MOA. I was shooting alone and did not see where I was missing, but I was wondering how the parallax adjustment could make my shot change that much? Thanks for the info in advance.

I have the same scope on a rem 700 .308 and have not had the problem you are speaking of. You may want to make sure your diopter (eye piece) is set correctly, will make image down range clearer. Make sure your head is as square to the scope as possible and you are not to close or far away from the eye piece. You will know when this is correct because you will not see a dark black margin looking through the scope. If your parallax is off you can see a double reticle or your image is out of focus. On some scopes the parallax knob doesn’t have distances, you turn until the pictur3 is clear. My nightforce does not have a distance marked on the knob. If this doesn’t help call Vortex customer service, they are super nice guys and may be able to help further. Good luck

I just got back from the range and my zero was off. I am assuming that with the zero being off I just had a unique situation where the 50 yard setting on the parallax was making it it just shaky enough that with the zero being off and the high zero it worked. I re-zeroed and made sure to set my parallax appropriately and it did great out to 300 yards ( the max for this particular range). Shot a three shot group at 300 yards on steel and with the bullet splash it was a 2" group so I am assuming it is back to how it should be. I will shoot at 435 again soon with the right parallax setting to make sure. Thanks everyone for your help.
