I'm just plinking around 500 yards and in. Mostly around 300 yards. With a ruger American hunter in 6.5 creedmoor. Looking for an opinion on the glass. For the glass I want ffp and zero stop. looking at vortex viper pst gen 1 6-24x50 found on sale at euro optics for $499.99 and Nikon fx 1000 same specs basically it to is from euro optics for $499.99 and the last option is athlon argos btr gen 2 found it for $399. Any opinions on witch to get or any other options in the $550 price range that is ffp and has zero stop. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

I cant speak for the other scopes you mentioned but the PST Gen 1 has good glass up to about 20x. My buddy has one a 6-24 that I have used many times and you will not miss because of the glass. Plenty clear for the 900 yards we have to shoot. If you are planning on bird watching through it, you may want to spend more.

too bad you missed the MidwayUSA blowout of the Viper PST Gen 2 3-15x with the EBR2C reticle....I have one holding me over until I get my ZCO 5-27....and man...that scope is rocking for me. Shooting comfortably to 1200 yds....1mile is hard to see impacts on most days....but I've lucked out and hit at 2500yds....ONCE...yep....luck..I was holding at the bottom of my reticle with 40MOA of rail and rings....and and full dial.

So...if you are only shooting 500 yards...you will likely be down around 10x anyway on most days or getting blown out on mirage...the scope has excellent turrets and decent glass....and you can find these cheap....new or used. You can probably find people on the Hide here that live near you....most people here will let you look through....shoot with....whatever we have...so you can see for yourself.

The vortex is I think one of the best entry scopes out there. I picked 2 up when I got started. At the price point, the glass is great and tracks true. With the one on my winmag, I was able to get rounds on at 1300 yards, so 500 will not be an issue to see. When I started getting serious about long range/competition, that's when I started dropping money into optics.

Yeah the only Competition would be between me and my brother. We both are use to shooting pistols an ar's just want to try something new to play with. I'm not trying to have more than $1200 or $1300 in the total package. we have a 300 yard range at his house the 500 yard range is at a buddies.

Gen 1 PST is a great scope. I have no quarrels with the 6-24 ffp. Decent zero stop, or, shim rather. Pretty bright. Not too heavy. Dont go too crazy on mag and you'll keep a decent picture. If this were last fall, the Ares BTR blowout would've been the best candidate in your race; otherwise, my vote is the Viper

Pst gen 1 is an excellent scope especially at 499$
Had one
The only reason I sold it was it was moa and i was converting to mil.

I have a 5-25x50 PST II on my RAP 6.5 and an Athlon Midas Tac on a Howa .223. I bought the Midas on the exchange for $500 and I'am really pleased. FFP, glass close enough to the PST II that I can't tell the difference, easy to set zero stop. If you want to stick with Vortex AA Optics have refurb Vortex PST IIs for very good prices, you can get a 3-15x44 for $550 and if you can bump your budget a bit you can move up to a PST II 5-25x50 for $675.

There’s plenty of used Midas tac and Ares BTR that pop up in the classifieds. You’re going to get more up to date features with same great warranty.
More mils/moa per rotation.
Better zero stop
Better glass.

I would buy the pst over the Nikon. If you have issues Nikon is no longer making rifle scopes were vortex will take care of you. I have shot my pstgeni to 1100 yards and it tracked good.

Pst or Nikon are both nice scopes. I have an FX 1000 6/24 and my son has a gen 1 pst 6/24. Pst has a finer crosshairs. Nikon has a little better glass and a better zero stop. Vortex has a great warranty. Nikon getting out of riflescopes. You will be happy with each.

I recently sold my 6-24 pst to a friend with the same rifle as you. Custom hand loads and he is sub moa at 600yds. The scope is pretty clear but does tail off past 20x magnification. Slightly blurry and eye relief gets really picky. I had it in my PRS gun and my zero would shift after a match. The scope always tracked true and seemed to hold up well unless I was spinning turrets all day. A great entry scope I think, take my observations how you will. I would recommend it for a hunting scope, not as much a competition scope.

It’s the only scope I’ve had the issue on, and I set my scopes up at max magnification. My nightforce scopes don’t give me the issue. Quite a quality difference between them as expected.

Are the extra price on the gen2's worth the upgrade over the gen 1's? Im a newer shooter when it comes to PRS and I have been seeing a lot of deals come up for the gen1 scopes from vortex but was wondering if i should just stick to the gen 2's

You’ll like the gen 1 till you look through better glass.
If you avoid that pitfall you’ll be a happy camper.
Personally I’d pony up to the Gen 2 at a minimum.
I made the mistake of looking through better glass:(

Gen 2 is a worthy upgrade compared to the gen 1. Neither will hold you back, my buddy just placed 5th at the last prs match with his gen 1. The 2 is quite a bit more refined though...
