Well, I'm just about ready to order a scope for my new 300wm.

I have narrowed it down betwean the Vortex viper 6.5-20x44 and the Hawk Sidewinder tactical 8.5-25x42.

Which do you all think has better glass?

Also, which do you think will be more durable? I want this scope to last me some years with no problems and hold zero.

Also, does it matter if the vortex viper gets wet what the knob covers are off?

Here are links to both scopes

If you really want it to last, spend more money. With a 300 Win Mag, if it is mounted on a lightweight hunting rifle, can be rather hard on cheap scopes. If your 300 Mag is a heavy weight precision rifle, surely you can do better. The current closeout sales on FFP 4200 Bushnells are only a few dollars more than the Hawke asking price.....</span>

Re: Vortex Viper vs Hawke Tactical?

Well, I took a chance and Got the Hawke tactical, so far I am glad that I did from what I can tell, so far I like the glass,it is very nice. sharper and better contrast then the last viper I looked through. I got the 6.5-20x42 version.
I will give an update when I get it to the range, along with my new toy that I just finished Devcon bedding

Re: Vortex Viper vs Hawke Tactical?

I have the Hawke 6.5-20x44 Sidewinder 30 Tac on my SPS. I have performed a box test, and it has tracked consistantly for 840 rounds. The only thing I think it lacks is a zero stop, but for the price point and SFP it is decent glass.
There are numerous threads and reviews about the Hawke Tactical 30 series, and I think that they have resolved alot of earlier issues. The reticle is good and the paralax adjustment works well. Keep in mind you will have to verify the mag setting to utilize the reticle. I measured off 100 yards, and ended up marking the magnification ring because ranging was actually below both 10x and 20x markings by about 1/16". Take the time to work it out, it will perform.

Re: Vortex Viper vs Hawke Tactical?

Zero stop turned out not to be a problem, with the 20 moa base I put on it and bore sighted, it stops within the same low yarded rotation as my 100 yard zero

Re: Vortex Viper vs Hawke Tactical?

I sold my Hawke when I purchased my Nightforce. The Hawke had decent glass and mine had the SR6 reticle with green/red illumination. I never had a problem with it.

Re: Vortex Viper vs Hawke Tactical?

I have a viper vortex. It is not mildot, but I can say this. It is fantastic for the money. I was not sold on them at first, but I have no complaints what so ever.

Re: Vortex Viper vs Hawke Tactical?

I was dead set on getting the 16x or 20x Hawke Tactical... UNTIL.

I was given a wonderful surprise from my wife of $500 that she had been saving for me. The closest thing out there to my old Nightforce is the Vortex PST. Soooooo, that is what I will be putting on my Savage 10PC here shortly.

The Hawke Tactical is an awesome scope... buy with confidence!!

Re: Vortex Viper vs Hawke Tactical?

I have since been looking into the Primary Arms 4-16 Tactical scope as well. I will be purchasing one of these for my boys Stevens .243 soon as well. Lots of good features, low profile, lots of internal adjustment... NICE!!

Also, Primary Arms is a Hide Authorized Dealer and they stand behind their stuff... they are good to go in my book.

Re: Vortex Viper vs Hawke Tactical?

First time post, several years of reading the forum and education from the posts.
I regards to the Hawke Tactical, I consider myself an informed decision maker and as such found the Hawke 6.5-20x44 to be a quality affordable scope for someone like me that enjoys shooting within a budget. Especially after reading several articles that put it up there with Nikon, Zeiss and Leupold. Someday I will purchase a high quality scope but until then I am very pleased with the Hawke. It sits atop a Savage 10fp Choate that has been worked abit by Kevin Rayhill of Stockade Stocks and have had it out to 500 yds. Very please with the set up. The Hawke provides many options that others don't or cost extra to get. I personally do not think you can go wrong with the Hawke but then as I have read here optics are a subjective subject. The only problem I have had has been with the rings. I went with Warne QD's and they came loose last time out so I am changing those out for Burris Extreme Tactical's.
Now if only I could figure out how to attach a picture I would post my set up. ARRRRRRRR

Re: Vortex Viper vs Hawke Tactical?

Upload your pics to photobucket or another picture host. Once they are uploaded, it will give you the URL information to post them here.

If that don't work for ya... email them to me and I will post them for ya.

Also, be sure to double check the Burris rings... mine were not a true center for my scope to the bore of the barrel. If you are just looking for some low cost rings, Warne 213M would serve you well. I myself have opted for the TPS Super Lows.

Hi everybody, sorry for the extremely late followup!, I know it's been a long time since I have started this thread in Jan 2011, I have been very busy with life and work. Anyways, I figured it has been long enough for a long term impression of this Hawke scope.

The good:
The scope to this day has never failed to track, or fogged or have any failure that would keep it from being used.

It has been on many rifles with a ton of rounds down range with it, Mostly 300wm and 308.

it is now 2020 and I would say I have had my money's worth out of it.

The Bad:
After years of use, there was a tiny small piece of debre inside the scope the fell and stuck onto the lens inside the scope, this was strictly cosmetic.

The "light" knob after all these years finally started to loosen up and started to give a slight flicker in the light itself.

The Awesome customer service!!!

So recently I went ahead and sent it off for warranty to take care of the two small issues.

Hawke took the scope in and I spoke with their tech on the phone about the problem and I also asked him his opinion on the newer FFP version on the scope, he said he liked it.
I asked him if the scope had to be replaced if it would be possible for me to pay the difference to upgrade to the newer ffp version, to my surprise, he upgraded it for me for completely free and they paid for free rush shipping, my return!!!!!

I remounted it and tested the tracking of the scope and shot about another 60 rounds with it " not a single issue"

My brother needed a new scope so I just gave it to him and it's working great on his 308 bolt rifle.

A side note.
The glass quality in my opinion is clearly better then the Votex gen 1 pst"Which I have used several different PSTs before", pretty close to my Athlon Ares",which the Ares beats it slightly at higher magnifications about 18x power and higher. not as good as my
Athlon Cronus, but hey, look at the price difference!

There are alot of scopes to choose from now on the market, alot more then there was in 2011. I think that if Hawke came out with a few newer designs, they would be awesome for the price.

I do not in any way knock them, they have earned my respect and I would not have any problem using another one of their scopes. especially over Vortex" which gets way more credit then they deserve, I have had several issues myself with vortex and a few other friends who also have.

Vortex started out with some good product when they came out but then they raised their prices to way higher amounts then what their products were worth. They are just now starting to lower their prices back now that there is more compitition on the market. From this day forward, I will not buy another Vortex product;beside the defender scope caps, I do like those!
