I’m a fan of using Binos for spotting at PRS matches. I’m looking to get a pair of Vortex Rzr HD or Viper HD. I’ve never compared them side by side so I’m asking for the opinions of those who have.

I also can’t decide on 12x or 10x. My club is always shooting between 300 to 1400yds. Most of the targets seem to be around 500-800yds.

Thanks

If I may make a suggestion, take a look at the Meopta Meopro and Meostar. The street prices are the same as the Viper HD and Razor HD, however, the Meoptas are superior optics. Better build quality, better glass. All in all I think you'd be much happier with the meopta.
Please feel free to give a call, 516-217-1000, to discuss it

I have used them side by side and the Razor is very clear and bright. The Viper is not far behind but between the two the Razor is clearer. I would go with the 12x for your needs. A little more power but not too much for spotting at PRS matches.

regarding 12 x vs 10x, glass quality always trumps magnification. So, I would find your max budget and buy the 10's vs the 12 @ the same price point.

an example, I was at the range with a friend the other day and we were tapping plates over 1k. He has a mid priced spotter. He could only pick up my vapor trail enroute to the steel through my Austrian glass (30X). I could even pick it up with my little 8x32's - and spot hits/misses as well.

If same good glass quality and same price why not go with the 12x? You are assuming the 12x would be lesser glass.

^^^ absolutely agree. My favorite glass for PRS is the Swaro 15x56. My comments were:

1) written not as a rebuttal to yours (I saw that a message came in while I was typing mine)

2) I would go with used Swaro/Leica/Zeiss quality @ a lesser magnification - hence at the same price point which the OP evidently has just given the fact he mentioned Vortex (good but not Alpha)

I’ve used Swaro binos at club matches. We have a sponsored shooter. Very nice optic. I’ll ask him if he has a club deal he can offer.

I’m not familiar with the model the Swaro was but out to 1k it was very useful.
Just for comparison purposes, how much difference in glass quality do you guys think the Rzr HD 12x are verses Swaro?

Another one to add to the short list to check out would be a pair of Leupold 15x56, I think the model is BX-5 Santiam HD. One of my buddies had a set of them at a match recently and we did a quick side-by-side with them and my Swaro 15x56 SLC HD. While they weren't quite as good as the Swaros they were close, and very impressive. I think the price point is not far off the Razors you're looking at.

I really like 15x56 magnification for PRS spotting.
