Suppressors Wait Time Pattern Different for Trust

An interesting side effect of the examiner assignment change?

I pulled data for all approvals from today back to February 15 from NFA Tracker, dumped them into excel, removed some obvious outliers and then charted two series: those approvals for individuals, and those approvals for trusts. Remember to use a small grain of salt when considering this data as the data in NFA tracker is self reported.

Wait time for individuals is lengthening at a pace faster than the pace of the trusts AND overall takes longer on average than a trust by some 5 to 10 days over this roughly 2 month period.

Setting aside some people's opinions of the quality of Griffin Armaments' products, they recently posted a response from the ATF as a scan of the letter. In that letter the ATF indicated that their new service target for processing NFA applications is fully 6 months now. if you haven't seen it, its worth a read.

This is all the more fuel to change to a simple system that could allow a person to be on an approval list that would not require the long wait for each item. Once you have a background check and complete the first approval process, you should not have to go thru that again. I hope this opens someones eyes. Thanks for the work you put into this OddBall.

approval for my last NFA through a trust must have been an outlier.

I did a half-dozen Form 4's and 1's in a single trust a year ago and they all tokk right at 6 months.

They have no interest in making it <span style="font-style: italic">easier</span> to get NFA items. That's why.
Personally, I don't understand why you have to wait 6 months to a year to add a butt-stock to a pistol or to purchase what is basically a long muzzle brake with a metal sleeve wrapped around it.

Exactly. Especially when its a trust or corp. An NCIC check, CCIC check takes about 15 minutes tops on a slow computer. Query on contacts to local PD takes a couple days at most if they are slow to answer. Add maybe a week for an investigator to write/file a report, and a couple days for someone to read it and issue the stamp. What more really do they *need* to be doing in the process?

I could get 30 days. Hell, I would probably not even care about 60. 180 days strains the bounds of credulity. They want you to wait more than half a percent of the average person's lifetime for them to run the paperwork.

"How about this?

They take a full six months to review an individual’s application for the new NFA Suppressor License Card. That process unfolds with all the diligence and professionalism required. At the end of that 6 month review period, the applicant receives their NFA Suppressor License Card and they can now legally purchase a suppressor(s) at the appropriate facilities. At the time of purchase, they present their card and the dealer executes a fast track application for transfer to...get ready...a person that is already...that's right...the approved holder of an NFA SUPPRESSOR LICENSE CARD. Nothing leaves with the purchaser until that form is returned to the dealer. The total time to process legitimate, approved NFA Suppressor License Card holders new suppressor purchases will be no more than 30 days, one month. That way, Dealers would have some form of prior identification to distill the process before it even gets to the NFA. The NFA can concentrate their resources on those that...get ready....are not already approved. We have something simple to carry when we transport, use our suppressors, namely the new NFA SUPPRESSOR LICENSE CARD.

And most importantly, it attends to the four major points that drive this thread, namely:

1. It makes absolutely no sense to go through the whole process over and over again.
2. It makes absolutely no sense to go through the whole process over and over again.

I'm still waiting for my 'Good Guy' card.

I've been fingerprinted more times than a career criminal, passed so many Level 1 and Level 2 background screenings I'm filling up the FBI hard drives, and even gotten my Safe Driver gold star.

Yet I continue to have to go through the same onerous application process each time I want buy a Title II item. I'm OK with paying the $200 tax.

But like RollingThunder51 so incisively put it: (Having to re-apply every time for a suppressor approval)is EXACTLY as logical as a person getting a Carry License and then, when they want to buy a new pistol....applying for yet again another Carry License."

This is a great idea, among a number of other great ideas. The way the NFA does it is probably the worst way possible for both the government and the citizen.

Spoke with my ATF agent last week about the wait. Apparently this year is the busiest yet and paperwork is piling up. My latest form 1 took 7 months. This was sent at the end of August and just came back two weeks ago. I also have an FFL, so I didnt have to send in fingerprint cards or photos. A good friend has also been a touch over 7 months already for a SBR, but his should be here this week.

I've been telling customers to expect 6-7 months. For applications submitted this summer, I'd not be surprised if it wound up being 8-9 months.

hmm, thanks for doing that data research, but the problem is that we cant get an accurate gauge of what their load is right now. with all the advertising, additional states legalizing items, and wide range of "budget" items, the wait times are just going up.

when i called earlier this month to ask about 4 items, the nice lady on the phone told me 5-6 months.
