Rifle Scopes Want my first LR scope.

I've usually always ran 1-4 on my rifles, or no scope at all. Even on my AR I prefer iron sights because I dont have the need for optics at close ranges such as a red dot or any type of scope.

Im beginning my first .308 build and I am starting with the Remington700 PSS model. I plan on taking this thing out to probably at MOST 800 yards if that, but wouldnt mind to be capable of further.

These will be handloads done by a close relative so I need to make a good decision on a perfect glass.


My budgest consist of about 700 or less if possible. I dont have the funds for a $1,000+ scope and dont really see the need for something like that when I am only going to be range shooting and maybe a local competition shootout.

For your budget, I would look at the Bushnell Elite and the SWFA Super Sniper series. I've read good reviews on both. I'm sure someone else will comment on either of those further and give you info that I can't really give, seeing as how I'm a beginner, too.

Bushnell 4200, Super Sniper HD. Might also find yourself a used Leupold M3 or similar for that price. 4200 is on sale everywhere for 600$ at the moment.

If you want to be a cheapskate the bushnell 10X mil mil is 200$ and I know at least one guy who uses one at 1k yards on a savage 308 10fp? and he regularly finishes in the top 10 (out of ~30 or 40 shooters).

Sounds like he is doing good, but you get what you pay for, so I am expecting to have something fairly nice but not the best with a 700 limit. I also want something adjustable if possible as my "range" if thats what you will call it goes from 100-600 yard points left to right so I want to be able to adjust quickly.

SWFA SS 3-9x42 Tactical Riflescope. Just checked it out on SWFA's website and seems great, tons of good reviews, but with only a 9x power, how clear will 6-800yards be? I want to really see the target, not just be able to point it out.

Bushnell 6-24x40 Elite 4200 Rifle Scope, pricing looks to be around $470, give or take some change.

It also has the Mildot recticle which I definately had on my watch list as I want to be able to if need be pick up a target to a certain range and know exactly "how high" to shoot above it on what I prefer my -0- to be.

Think I might be sold...

Duke (as in Dukes of Hazard),

Do not buy the Bushnell 6-24x40MM (Model # 426243A) for a long range rifle as it has only 26 MOA of adjustment range.

If really you must have a 6-24 Bushnell there are two better ( and of course more expensive choices:

Bushnell 6-24x50mm SFP MIL/MOA (Model 426245T)
Bushnell 6-24x50mm FFP MIL/MIL Illuminated (Model 426245F)

Although they are still lacking in adjustment range (50 MOA and 48 MOA) they are eminently more useful than the 40mm models.

Actually the best bang for the buck Bushnell is this one:

Elite 4200 3-12x44mm FFP MIl/MIL Illuminated (Model 423124F). It has 80 MOA of adjustment, and 12x will get you where you need to go.

In my opinion that Bushnell 4200 6-24x40 is a poor choice for precision shooting. It's a 1" scope with extremely limited elevation adjustment (26 moa). Plus it has 1/8" adjustments, 1/4" is preferred. Lastly it has no exposed turrets to make your elevation adjustments. That scope is really only good for zeroing at 100 yards and using the mil-dots for your holdovers. That is not good for precision shooting especially at 800 yards. There are far better options in your price range.

You will be much better off with the Bushnell 4200 6-24x50 mil/mil (around $750) or moa/mil scope (around $600). Has all of the features and adjustment (with 20 moa rail) for 100-800 yard shooting.

I would think that you could even get away with the original 10x super sniper. They are good scopes. I have been running one for a while without a hiccup. The Bushnell scopes are a good option as well from my limited experience with them. I would think if you are comfortable shooting with iron sights, 10x would be more than sufficient to get to 800 yds for you.

The reticle center illuminates off/on with the dial near the eyepiece. This is a much better scope for your money.

3-9 SS is good for a DMR "hasty" mid range optic, but you'd be better served with the mil/mil fixed 10X as you may run into trouble without parallax adjustment.

I say buy a 10X or 16X old school SWFA SS and a case of match ammo for the same money. Shoot making every shot count, learn the mil/moa relationship, your rifle and what you really want/need will make itself apparent to you. You will be better suited down the line, and then have a great backup scope to boot.

That too, or use the money for reloading components, spotting scope, all the other things that cost $$$. The Japanese Bushnells are not bad scopes though.

It is mildot.
I am the original owner and this scope is in fantastic shape and with no issues.
It has extremly faint rings marks that are very hard to see...... almost not worth pointing it out.
Have the original box as well.

Just wondering about the SWFA SS, can anyone give a little feedback on them as far as quality and durability?

Id rather have the ability to move from 3-9 or even more on the zoom but for 300+ less get a "just as good" optic I mean why not.

Anyone use these up to 600 yards and not really concerned about replacing it any time soon?

For the budget you have, either the Bushnell 3-12 or SS 3-9 FFP scopes with mil turrets/mil reticle are going to be the most useful choices...good between 0-600 yards...maybe more with the 3-12. But be realistic. Sure, it's nice to anticipate future uses and set lofty goals, but shoot at 300, 400, and 500 yards before you start thinking about distances like 800. On a budget under a grand, you can end up with some limitations that could just kill off your desire to ever reach out farther.

Why is a Yugo cheaper than a BMW? I mean they are both cars right?

I suggest you learn how to read scope specifications charts:

For example:

The Bushy 6-24x40mm that you seem so fond of: has a 1" tube, No target turrets, no illumination, Objective mounted AO and 26 MOA of elevation adjustment. That 26 MOA is distributed as 13 MOA up and 13 MOA down. That will only get to about 550 yds in a 308, with a 100 yds zero.

Now the 3-12x44mm that we have been recommending:

30mm Tube, Target turrets (Mil based), Side focus AO, Illumination, and 80 MOA of adjustment. That 40 MOA up and 40 MOA down. Put a 20 MOA base, and you will have 60 MOA up and 20 MOA down.

A 175 gr 308 needs about 39.1 MOA of elevation to reach 1kyds.

Like the BMW and Yugo example, the build quality is completely different, even though both are 4200 series Bushnells.

And that sir is what we are trying to tell you.....

look on ebay for the Bushnell 3-12x44 with illum. reticule, FFP, Mil/Mil they have them for $500. They say they are Demos but I received mine 2 days ago and it is brand new looks great.

Thanks I appreciate it, I didnt know that depending on the MOA it was divided in to up/downs like you posted. very good information.

And thanks for helping me understand that just because they are the "same model" doesnt mean they come with all the perks as the others. I just dont really know what to look for in a scope like this.

Id probably buy the Leupy from SmokeRolls.. but thats just me.. I had a SS 10x that worked perfectly for me. Its a great scope for someone on a budget. Military uses 10x scopes so Im pretty sure you should not have any problems with long range targets.

The Leupy is a pretty good deal and will get you into the level of the $1000 dollar scopes..

Never used a bushnell but here its a good one for the price range.. it sounds like you already know what you want to get.. which is good. Although they may have some of the same options they still differ.. the difference comes with the quality of the glass and other internals.. foreign parts or American made parts.

If you think the bushnell is what you want than get it, try it out, and if you don't like it you can always sell it at a later time.

No by all means i will take your suggestion into consideration. Dont think i was trying to downsize what you say or anything, Im all ears and open to any comments!

i plan on going to the local Sportsman Warehouse and several other locations that sale optics, with a list of ones I want to view. I will look through them all and even ask if they mount one on the rifles they have in stock so I can view through it to see if I like. I dont know much but i know one thing Ive learnt in my small time of guns and shooting, and its you have to be comfortable with what you got.

I dont really plan on buying from anyone local, just going to them and testing them out per say.

Keep rings and bases in mind with your budget; I always forget those. A nice scope sitting in Wal-Mart rings won't be fun.

I just replaced a Horus Hawk on my LR308 with a SWFA SS 10X, the non-HD one with the rear focus. I'll tell you, from the price point I am very impressed with the glass, as well as the scope in general. Very clear and I love the turrets. A major selling point for me with this scope is that I didn't need a canted base to shoot out past 1k; the specs say to expect 100 MOA of travel, but mine has 137 3/4 MOA, which is fantastic.

$300 for the scope, $200 for a Larue mount, and $30 for a Mil-Dot master and you're good to go for 1k yards. Also, I've shot out to 700 yards with a Burris FFII Tac 2 x 7 scope with no problems. I would think that the 3 x 9 would also serve well, and with better glass from what I hear.

i have shot through bushy 3200s and they are decent scopes for the money. I currently am running a 2.5x16x42 6500 on my AR. great glass for my budget. It has the 30mm tube, target turrets, sunshade, mil dot. I wish it was illuminated but no biggie.

Better glass and adjustments are in mil mil. If you are going to be staring through it for a long time the better glass will be appreciated. My regular 10X SS gave me tension headaches after using it for several hours.

I was about to mention the same thing. I think I am sold on the Bushnell. Looks like it is going to be the best bang for my buck, so I will save up the money for the Bushnell grab it, and maybe by this time 2011 I will be able to get something "better" if I feel I have a need for it.

But just to add, I stopped by tonight to look at the rifle I am paying for this Friday and he tried to sell me a Nikon 3-9x40 scope that was 1'', BDC with 2-600 yard dots. He tried to say 300 bucks out the door for it but Id rather wait for that bushnell and have something I can use to it and even further if I wished with a better glass.

I think your talking about the Nikon Buskmaster scope.. A buddy of mine has that on his plinking rifle.. and bought it for $200. Don't waste your money... Save for the Bushnell

That's not true. It is a different optical design and has better glass than the standard Vipers.
