Wanting a battle rifle

Damn that ain’t too bad. I was 13. It is crazy to think how much inflation the gun industry has seen since 1990.
Nice quality SKS rifles will pull in excess of $600 these days. The same value as a new in box DPMS .308...wrap that up in your nugget!

I paid about $200 for a Yugo packed in cosmoline with the armory book. Paid about $75 to get the throat lengthened to shoot today's steel bulk ammo without piercing primers. Shoots good for a peasant piece.
I sold several of those years ago. I think they were selling for $179 a copy, new, in storage. Beautiful firearms.
OP...today you can buy an AR10 platform in 7.62NATO/.308WIN for under $700. This is unheard of and won't last. If you want a semi-auto .308 buy a factory gun with a warranty that you can upgrade over time. Those of us whom have lived under several bans will tell you that firearms have never been so accessible and inexpensive. Most modern firearms are capable of more than the shooter (quality parts). Shooters always underestimate the "care and feeding" of a weapon and a firearm in this dollar figure will allow you to shoot (optics, ammo and range time). That...is more important than other factors.
Atlantic has the Arsenal Sam 7 K 7.62x39 Pistol on sale for $999.00 Slap a brace, and red dot on it. Pretty battle-ish
So you want a non-battle rifle “battle rifle”, 7.62x39 is your answer. I feel like this was quite the roller coaster ride of a thread. You are keeping us all on our toes.
If I were going to add another MBR to my collection I would definitely go the route of the AR-10 as you can get additional uppers in other calibers readily allowing you to swap out uppers just like your AR-15. This will give you flexibility that can be had in other platforms.
That being said if you need more power and range Id look at the 6.5 Grendel. Its an extremely effceint cartridge with great ballistics and hits pretty hard at longer ranges. Furthermore, it should readily fit your AR lower and its a heck of a lot cheaper than a AR-10 type rifle or any other 308 option for that matter.

Very difficult to fap to this thread...but you had me at “battle rifle.”
I’m thinking the OP needs a G3 with a 22 conversion kit with it. That way he (gender assumed) can plink cheaply, yet still rock and roll when whatever SHTF scenario comes to his (i did it again) neighborhood.

I'm a minimalist, and am not collector either, so I can't get into keeping a bunch of guns that sit in the back of the safe that seldom get used. I'm editing this part of my post from the original one because I didn't think I was making as much sense as I could have. For example I have 4 old WW2 bolt rifles, one a straight pull. I decided I'm going to sell all but one because I can't see the sights well anymore. I'm even selling my 40x with apertures!

Couldn't get into 300BO, just not my thing.
I played around with various 223 semi's too, I sold the others and kept my .6" AR. Ha, kind of a fun experience but in the end AR is hard to beat.
I did like my SKS's and wish I kept one, prefer these over AK.
6.5G in a short AR is going to be hard to beat for an all arounder, offering some thwack factor, accuracy, decent for long range or hunting, low recoil, etc.

mmm i like my G3/CETME i picked up a C308 and put in new er in spec BCG and bolt then new rollers to bring the bolt BCG gap into spec.
its been shooting 1-1/2 MOA with good ammo and tighter with reloads. heavy , yes, its a battle rifle, it saved mybacon more than once during my 3 years in the big "A". plus it will shoot just about any 308 ammo, and with the 1X10X24 scope i can shoot any distance a 308 can be shot. oh and i have over 50 magazines that i bought for pennies. im adding a good trigger and its good to go for just over $1000

I just got my first roller lock, a PTR. I've had AR10s for years and wanted something different in a caliber I already horde in. It came down to FAL clone or G3 clone, and the G3 won based on several factors. a SCAR would have been nice, but more than I wanted to spend on another semi 308.

There is a pretty clear distinction between Main Battle Rifles (they shoot a .30 caliber full size round) and Assault Rifles (they shoot an intermediate round, also full auto). Weird things like the SKS and semi-automatic versions of Assault Rifles don't fall in either category.
It seems like you want a semi-automatic version of an Assault Rifle or an SKS, not a Main Battle Rifle.
There is nothing wrong with that, just know what you are getting and maybe when you grow up you can get a Main Battle Rifle like a real man.

I thought the same after getting out, but still invested in one and plan on another. It is common round to find, cheap and you can replace the upper anytime you want. I chose to SBR mine and have no regrets. Buy multiple cal uppers like 300bo or 7.62x39 if you want something different to shoot.
My Shooting Buddy and I both bought PSA PA-10's.
His is the 18" with the mid length gas; and mine is the 20" with the rifle length gas.
One worked, and it wasn't his. He has since gone nuts with the an adjustable gas block and finally put in the JP Silent Captured 308 Buffer setup. Runs good now; but it ain't strictly a PSA anymore, either.
I ended up replacing the Carbine stock and Buffer Tube/Assembly with the A2 Tube/Assembly and Choate E2 stock. Then, just because I could, I put in the same JP buffer assembly as he had. Haven't had time to fire it with the new buffer system yet, but I'm not sweating it.
In general, the 308's are a bit heavier than I'd like to be lugging around.
I built a 16" M4-ish carbine from an AR Stoner Upper, a PSA PA-15 lower, and a bunch of aftermarket replacement bits, including a Luth AR MBA-5 Stock and Chubby Grip. Also added a PSA 2-Stage Trigger, and BAD lever. Nice Carbine; with the 1:7" twist, it's liking the IMI 77gr stuff, but I don't have a shit ton of that stuff laying about. Might need to break into the old M855 out in the back shed.
Assuming I genuinely needed an actual combat rifle; that's the one I'd be considering taking out to the ball.
But let's be realistic.
There are no, none, zero chances I'd be bringing any war to anyone. What war I might actually consider bringing anywhere would start and end at my own doorstep. The thing about going off and being warlike somewhere else has a hugely fatal flaw; it leaves my family at home, without me, fending for themselves. That ain't happening.
Might be worth giving that thought some quality time in some other minds, too.
I did my soldierly bit back in the 1960's.
Anyone absolutely depending on my pale, skinny ass coming to save them is already summarily fucked.

Where did you acquire this gun? Only asking because I had one identical to it about 9 or 10 years ago and sold it. I was living in El Paso when I sold it.

I just donated my Yugo SKS (Never Fired, still in the cosmo) to a local Legion Riders Club for auction. It brought in $3k. I also donated my Savage 10FCM Scout for another Veterans' association, and it brought in the same. They were both chambered in 7.62x39. Now I have one less chambering to buy/handload for.

As far as a battle rifle, 7.62x39 is hard to argue with, probably the most winning rifle in combat, despite having the largest military known to man, random citizen soldiers in Vietnam and the Middle East ran our asses out using AKs a few times. I’d say more tyrants have met their maker at the business end of a AK than anything else as well.
For competition or precision it’s hard to argue with the AR platform in 223/308, but as far as a battle rifle for battle, the proof is in the pudding, and the pudding tastes like 762x39 AK

You do realize that the country that the AK came from, moved on from 7.62x39 as their primary infantry round some time back?

Seems to be a lack of decorum on the forum.
It's hard to argue with the platform's reliability but when our military's fighting with it's hands tied behind it's back, our enemies may as well have using muskets.
I'll take an AR platform loaded with 77gr Sierra TMK's any day of the week. You get a decent bc bullet with expansion down to 1900 fps or possibly less and the ability to carry far more ammo for the same weight.
