IMHO, he was good... but he was incapable of understanding that he would unleash evil.
India/Pakistan partition did not have to go down the way it did. But India had been whipped into a frenzy that Ghandi thought he could control by being 'good.'
This is a brilliant documentary done by the BBC showing how ineptly the partition was handled.
Unfortunately, the whole partition was the result of a situation pushed by Ghandi, who believed India should not be partitioned but should be a 'Big Tent' nation. But others wanted nothing to do with his Utopian views.
Ghandi was far from evil. But he is the Poster Boy for the law of unintended consequences and how 'do gooders' can manage to stick their "Mrs. Kravitz" noses where they don't belong... and the end result is chaos at a minimum... and in the case of Partition... genocide.
Sad, but true. Do-gooder-meddlers cause far more harm than good.

BTW, the movie "Ghandi" was one big India PR project.
Ghandi was of a sort of exercise in duality. He was on one hand bloodthirsty member of the British Army, on the other hand here I am a man of peace.
And before he was sleeping with those underage girls, he liked to share enemas with them first. He was really into enemas....

Pick just about any historical "Hero" and look at their life details and there is a very good chance you find they were as fallible and corrupt as everyone else. They just managed to accomplish something great despite it, not because of the absence of it.
