I just got my Savage TR in .22lr and the gun was what I think to be very dirty. Also the barrel at about the part where marking on the barrel is there looks like it's got a smoothe spot all the way around the barrel

Rifles get proof fired, and manufacturers rarely clean them afterward. So some bore crud is to be expected.

More importantly, some of my rifles have come through NIB with all manner of factory grit and non-shooting grime left loose in the barrel. A guy would need to be plum dumb not to clean that stuff out before sending anything harder or faster than a patch down the bore.

Never, never, never, ever, ever, ever shoot a newly acquired (even a used) rifle without first subjecting it to a thorough maintenance cycle.

+1 on always cleaning newly purchased firearms.

I don't know of any manufacturers that clean a high volume production firearm once it is proofed and function tested. You might get a clean gun from the Remington Custom Shop, but definitely not a M597.

I did check it when i purchased it but it was poorly lit in the gun shop + the barrel was very dirty that's why the first thing I did when I got home was start cleaning

Everyone or most here seem to think Savage 22s are the way to go. Lets all face it you get what you pay for. There is a reason Savage is cheap. I have benn shooting 22s for years and have never seen a Savage in a match or yet alone win one. A 300 dollar 22 is a 300 dollar 22 thats all. I know we have all seen people post groups here that there Savages will shoot. Call me an asshole but if you buy one do not expect world class accuracy out of it. From a real world point of view i dont se a Savage out shooting a 52 or a 40x hell there is Anschutz, Cooper, Sul A good HR 12 will work. Then there is a Bruno NO.4. If you buy a Savage with all the trouble people here has been haveing dont chy its your fault

Well here's one Savage .22LR match winner just in the last few months...

Its foolish to expect a $300 rifle to shoot as good as a $1200+ rifle...but that's not to say a $300 rifle can't shoot really damn well.

Oh yeah...I put about 150 rounds through my FV-SR without first cleaning it. It did nickel-sized 10 shot groups @ 25yd, with me kneeling in an indoor range with the guy in the next lane popping off 45 ACP.

Cleaned it a couple days after shooting it; one pass with a bronze brush and 5 patches with Outers Nitro and it was clean as a whistle.

I doubt it (or I) win any benchrest matches, but I think it'll shoot just lovely off a bench & sandbags or prone with a bipod to 100yd and beyond.
