Fieldcraft washing ball caps?

Re: washing ball caps?

I have heard that the dishwasher works, I did it once and the oil stains remained, but it was definatley cleaner. other than that I would do it by hand like the wife does her pretty undies.

Re: washing ball caps?

I usually dont wash mine either, but you can try these, they work. Works best in the dish washer but if you dont have one, put some twisty ties on to make SURE it's held together because a washing machine will beat the hell out of it and it will likely come open and your hat will fall into the watery abyss.

just do a google for "hat washer"

Re: washing ball caps?

I've found that alot of newer hats have a polymer type bill and they don't deform in the washing machine as bad as you'd think. The way I clean mine is just run them in the washng machine on the slowest setting the machine has, (very important stop the machine before the spin cycles) then get them out before the spin. Let the spin go thru like normal and after the spin let the rinse water fill put the hats back in for a short rinsing. Get the hat out and put a towel in the hat to keep shape. You cah also that a rubber band or get a cheap dog coller or something that will hold the bill in the shape you like until it dries. I don't have to do the bill on most of the newer hats with the polymer type bill. But if it's a paper bill then the bill needs to be held into place until it dries completely.

You can look at the stitching on the under side of the bill, look where the thread goes thru the bill you should be able to tell if it looks like plastic or cardborad.

Re: washing ball caps?

I've washed many. I put liquid detergent directly on the oil spots. Then I wash them with a load of clothes as usual.

It's not good to put them in the dryer, because the tumbling will wear the fabric from the front of the bill. Just let them air dry.

I have one hat several years old I have washed many times. It looks better than new, because it has faded to a nicely old-salt look.

Come on man, I'd never be caught in a hat like that. Congrats by the way! One vagina for the rest of your life...way to think it through.

Re: washing ball caps?

I have quite a collection of hats and wear them all. If you want the hat to last wash as seldom as your wife or sensibilities about hygiene will allow. When you wash hand wash with Dawn dishwashing liquid and a a fairly soft bristled veggie brush or something similar...a fingernail brush is great. I work it over good until the head grease is no more. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.Find a pot, tupperware bowl, collander, butter tub etc that the hat fits on and in the proper shape, then air dry or use a blow dryer on it while on the form.

Re: washing ball caps?

This is what I use in the dishwasher. I see them in dollar stores occasionally - they work well ....

Re: washing ball caps?

When they finally get to that point I either throw them in the washer or throw them out.

I am surprised my wife has not tossed more of mine. I have a pretty extensive collection.

It seems to grow every time I shoot one of Steve's matches.

On a side note, I have washed our new "Shooter's Hats" a couple times and not had a problem. Then again that's what you get with a US made product versus an import.
