Id hate to slander ANYone that is pro-gun but I feel this deserves a little attention... That being said, did anyone watch the Mark Kelly/Wayne LaPierre interviews this afternoon with Chris Wallace from Fox News?? First, Mark Kelly began the interview. He proceeded to make some pretty strong arguments that seemed to advocate for ideas and, therefor infringements, against of our 2A rights. I strongly dislike the Kelly/Gifford family and everything they stand for but I truly think they may have acquired a couple fence riders via this interview. Maybe I'm an idiot, but, sadly enough Wayne LaPierre got ran over and looked like a damn fool throughout. He was constantly choking up, fumbling his words, and letting Chris Wallace dominate the conversation in its entirety.. When Wallace brought up DC v Heller and quoted Scalia's determination that the Second Amendment "was not unlimited," couldn't he have at least fired back with "it clearly states the right to bear arms shall NOT be infringed!" Soon after that, Wallace brought up that retarded ad they ran about the Presidents children which furthered the obliteration. I don't know, but, I truly believe NRA members need to demand a new spokesman and advocate for our 2A rights. We need someone a hell of a lot more bold & assertive! Now is not the time to absorb punishment. This is our 2nd Amendment he's fucking with. Correct me if Im wrong, but, this was just one of many sub-par performances from Mr. Wayne LaPierre... What do you guys think???

I agree that we need a " no nonsense" kind of person speaking on our behalf. I'm not sure Lapierre is the answer. Someone a little more bold would help. If you get someone that can "turn" the the heads of the undecided , than you can win more support. The problems with shows like that is, they bombard the guests, and make them look uncomfortable. Someone like Ted Nugent , might not be the way to go either. Personally , I think Ted Nugent has a lot of the same thoughts and opinions as myself. But those may be too much for folks. I don't know. Hard problem to fix , easily

Bingo (although let's not forget that LaPierre had his own moments of bomb-throwing in the mid-90s before morphing into his current milquetoast form).

I'm assuming that the NRA has the position of "president" for some reason other than to fill in a slot on the masthead; if so, then why isn't David Keene getting some face time on national TV? If he isn't the right guy for the job (and I know little about him), then get someone who is. If LaPierre is some sort of fundraising or lobbying genius, that's fine; let him work behind the scenes... but get him off camera right now.

I want a person who will agrue the plain and simple facts that the second ammendment was designed to protect ourselves against our own Government. It can never be antiquated or outdated. We should not be punished for other peoples actions.

I started watching the interview and thought the same thing, very disappointing to say the least. I felt as though he did not prepare at all for the questions that most assuredly would be asked. He kept bringing up the same points over and over again. The NRA is similar to the Republican party, both need a makeover.

I let my NRA membership lapse for a number of years because of LaPierre. He's not the man for the job, and I got tired of him doing nothing but ask me for more money and not doing anything effective with it. With all the recent uproar I immediately renewed my membership, but somewhat begrudgingly because of LaPierre still being the "face" of the organization. He really needs to go behind the scenes if he wants to be effective, and let someone else do the talking.

I've seen Wayne give some interviews and comments. Not his strong suit that's for sure. Maybe he should give up some of that salary to help fund the fund that NRA members fund.

While I certainly have my differences with the NRA and LaPierre, he's turning out to be a fairly effective lobbyist. Consider this: in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting, EVERYONE but us was crying for a larger assault weapons ban than the first, a ban on high cap mags, and a litany of other restrictions. That's why we saw frankengun AR15s going for $3k and a run on everything semi auto.

Now, just two months later, most of the media and politicos admit that the only legislation that can get passed nationally *might* be universal background checks. Whatever LaPierre's failures in front of a camera he must make up for in backchannel lobbying. What I suppose happened is that he simply made it clear to Republicans in liberal states and Democrats in conservative states that compromise on gun rights would be punished with severe prejudice as only the NRA can do. In the Senate, the AWB likely won't get a single Republican vote, nor will it get support from about 6-8 Democrats that are from conservative states.

Does the NRA need a better spokesman? Yes they do. Frankly, I think a man like Chris Kyle (RIP) would have been great for that position. The NRA face should be that of a lifetime hunter, a recent combat vet, and a Washington outsider. Though I agree about LaPierre's public speaking, he's been effective on the lobbying side, demonstrated by the fact that the NRA so far has ensured that the more restrictive legislation didn't even pass the Senate let alone the House. I consider that pretty effective lobbying.

I've thought that LaPierre needed to be banished to some back room as a strategy wonk for a long time, he is a horrible choice to be the face of the NRA. The NRA-ILA's Chris Cox is a much better spokesman, he thinks quickly on his feet, is confident, and just plain more "likeable" than LaPierre. Hell, I'm an NRA life member and LaPierre makes my skin crawl. Seriously, over 4 million members and we can't find a better spokesman?

David Keene is pretty sharp, not real dynamic but he can hold his own against the antis. He is vastly better than LaPierre.

WLP recognizes the fact that when people use propaganda based premises, there is no trying to change their minds. They are so deep into the belief that appeals to authority, appeals to emotion, appeals to the common man, ad homonym attack, and the other premises they use are truth.
Look at each and every single premise that supports further firearms legislation and they all have one thing in common. They fall, as invalid and unsound, when placed before the standard that governs truth or propaganda.
What we need, is people who recognize propaganda and call those who use it instantly and invalidate their premise. This debate can be won easily, but most people who even consider it are not equipped correctly.

Anthony Weston, "A Rulebook for Arguments" is a very direct, to the point, short informative read. It will school you on the rules of propaganda so you can recognize it, then debate it is unsound and invalid

While I concur that LaPierre has come across on the screen as somewhat resembling a deer in the headlights; I also recognize that ambush journalism and biased editing are also at play here.

Personally, I'm not overly concerned in this matter.

It's my belief that folks who still expect that this issue will be resolved according to public opinion and legislative action are rather missing the key point.

Legislators who seriously believe that that still have the power to bell the cat by curtailing 2nd Amendment rights are rather blithely underestimating the cat. I personally believe that legislation to that effect will be first ignored, and then actively and strenuously resisted by American gun owners. Openly public opinion here in CNY is clearly defiant of the Cuomo Debacle. I believe that as these paranoid excesses continue to spring up across America, such viewpoints will become widely, if not universally, spread.

We have never yet seen the like of what's happening and what's coming, and Congress and State Houses across the land seem unswervingly, uncaringly committed to precipitating their own ostracism. I think that what ensues will be their own doing, and will ultimately result in a more healthy US political equilibrium. I welcome it, and hope it wastes no time in its coming.

First off, thanks for all the input everyone! Now, this is probably a very difficult question to anwser, or even speculate on, but does anyone have any insight regarding the future of the NRA? Being that David Keene, 68, and Wayne LaPierre, 65, are venturing past their psycological prime so to speak, what exactly is in store for the future regarding the protection of our 2nd Amendment?

Hopefully Keene and LaPierre are ahead of the game and have a serious set of plans in place to ensure a successful future for both the NRA, and more importantly it's members, for many generations to come.

I've said since the first time I saw him on camera something like 20 yrs ago that he was an awful spokesman. Maybe behind the scenes he's fantastic, but find someone else to get the mic shoved in their face. He always comes off stiff with no charisma. I understand we (the NRA) pay him 1M+ a yr, for that money we need a better performance on camera.
