Well losing weight, is one of the difficult task for me since i have been a little chunky all my life.I tried almost everything to loose weight. The most effective method, that i found out is to change lifestyle.Reduced the size of meal portion, exercise daily and drink a lot of water at least 8 glasses every day. These were suggested by the members of this forum.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

I lost right at 100 pounds by watching my carbs intake. I only eat 15 to 20 total carbohydrates per day. I do cardio exercise for at least 30 minutes five to six days a week and drink alot of water. It wasn't a quick deal and took me about 2 1/2 years to lose it all. Definately a lifestyle change! This is the only diet that has worked for me. I went from 296 to 196 and have kept it of

Re: Weight, loss tips.

Some people lose weight easier than others, but losing weight isn't hard (it may take a while but it will happen). If you eat healthy meals made of whole foods that are prepared in a healthy manner then you will lose weight. If you are a big person then you can almost skip portion control for a while because it will be really hard for you to over eat if most of your calories come from fruits and vegetables. At some point you will plateau and you will have to refocus on things like portion control, but take baby steps so that you don't get discouraged.

People who successfully lose weight are those who commit to a lifestyle change. Diets are gimmicky and they don't last long term. You need to make healthy lifestyle choices and commit to a healthy lifestyle for the rest of your life or the weight will come right back on.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

Count calories.

Calories in < Calories out

Eat high protien, and drink lots of water.

Lift heavy 3 times a week. Cardio is not needed for weight loss, but good for your heart.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

I've found that adding a a carb re-feed once a week helps with a low carb diet. 20-30 g of carbs/day during the week and then one dinner where I go all carbs. Seems to reset hormones and it keeps the fat loss loss steady week after week.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

Always keep yourself busy, excercise often but dont get into a routine because your body will get used to the routine and thats usually where most people plateau. Keep your body guessing so its always burning calories and fat. Regular exercise and a healthy diet (with one cheat day a week) will help you lose weight pretty fast. Also, taking vitamins will also help. I take 500mg of L-Carnitine twice a day. This helps the amino acids in your system to break down the stored fat to be used for energy. get a subscription to mens health, the info in the magazine is good enough to keep me motivated and staying in shape. Good luck

Re: Weight, loss tips.

I am by no means a big guy. But i did want to cut down on my body fat and i dropped 3% in 1 year only by watching my calories.... i still ate whatever the hell i pleased but I never took in more than my given calories per day.... now if i had really watched what i ate as well as only take in so many calories there is no telling how much better i could be. but that all comes down the the self control and will power. my advice is if you can do the calories for a month you will be very very pleased. there are several websites that offer calorie intake calculators as well
as a side note after a year of that plus doing a mixture of crossfit and weight training i am down to 10% body fat

Re: Weight, loss tips.

Oh i didnt mean to insult you. I wasnt thinking you were a big guy, i was just giving you ideas as to help you lose some weight and add muscle. I am nowhere near overweight but i keep that routine so i can actually indulge during the holidays but because i have conditioned my body, i actually get real sick and feel like crap when i over eat or dont eat healthy. It sucks for about two weeks to get into shape but once you do, you will feel aweful if you dont workout or eat healthy.

By doing this regularly, i am down to about 6% body fat and i weight about 180 lbs. Swimming really helped me drop the body fat fast with Acetyl L Carnitine & Alpha Lipoic Acid. I hope this helps

Re: Weight, loss tips.

Eating large meals isn't good for you at all. Smaller meals are MUCH better- both to lose weight (since you feel less hungry) and also as you digest them better. Chewing food more slowly also helps. I've included a small meal schedule that you can try to follow. As for your sleeping habits- don't eat after 4/5 or so in the morning.

A small meal plan for instance would be:

Breakfast (5-6pm for you): 1 poached egg on a slice of wholemeal bread and green tea.

Brunch (7.30pm): A bowl of mixed berries with low fat natural yoghurt

10pm: Chicken breast with green beans, salad and baby potatoes)- any non fizzy, not alcoholic drink.

1am: A small pasta pot- wholemeal tomato pasta for instance. A glass of water, preferably with a few drops of lemon juice.

3am: A home-made low fat pasty with a smoothie.

4.30 am: A vegetable quiche with carrots, a large cup of tea/coffee with low fat milk and honey instead of sugar (as it is hydrolysed and not stored as fat as much as sugar is)

If you're at work, I'm sure you can sneak away for a minute or so to eat.
Good luck!

Re: Weight, loss tips.

I tried the Primal diet after seeing a post here. It has been very easy for me to cut out sweets (sugars) and the carbs which the diet says to cut. I lost great weight for 3 weeks but have not continued at the same pace since then. I feel good, am not hungry, and am been very happy.

I saw a show on 60 minutes last weekend about the evils of sugar and that is in line with what the Primal Diet explains, but worse.

I listed a link to the site which I have been using for recommendations. It has a lot of information and you don't have to purchase anything, which I have not.

Marks Daily Apple Primal Diet

I wish you good luck!

Re: Weight, loss tips.

That’s great! It’s always good to learn about different kinds of weight loss diet tips that worked for different people. For me, along with watching my carbs, some kind of cardio workout that I enjoyed really helped. It’s important to enjoy your exercise and what you eat if you want to lose weight.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

I've never done it myself, but a lot of friends and family have had good success losing weight by following the P90X routine and diet. I think my dad is down to what he weighed in high school. My mother and my sister-in-law have also had success with the workout and diet.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

If you're trying to lose weight, it's important to know the science behind diet, as well as the controversial areas behind clinical tests and studies. With this in mind I would strongly recommend reading this book:

http://www.amazon.com/Good-Calories-Bad-Challenging-Conventional/dp/1400040787

The author goes into detail on the results from 50yrs of clinical tests, and goes specifically into the effects of sugar, insulin, as well as those of metabolic syndrome - among the flaws inherent in the high-carb, low-fat diet as prescribed by our good friend the Food Pyramid.

The book has over 50pgs of references, so by all means do the research yourself, and make up your own mind.

Thanks for the information Lazlo!

I ordered this book and a couple of his other books. This looks like great information and is clearly worth the small amount of money............my health is important and I don't want to be a fat ass like the typical American!

Re: Weight, loss tips.

count your calories; all of them. the goal is to burn more than you take in to result in a caloric deficit -> weight loss. the quicker you can disconnect from food the better you will be. eat to live not live to eat(hodgetwins inspired). find out what your rough basic metabolic rate is using one of the several calculators available on line. then cut the food you eat and avoid those items with empty calories; e.g. sodas and other bags of trash. you can increase your weight loss by supplementing your decreased calories and increasing your cardio activity. there are many excuses out there for you to accept but the truth of the matter is rather simple and transparent.
how bad do you want to change? rhetorical question

Re: Weight, loss tips.

I have friends that have done P90X with great results. A few years ago I started doing MMA, Ju-jitsu and crossfit 3 or 4 times a week and the result have been amazing. My heart monitor says I am burning roughly 900-1000 calories per hour of MMA. The flipside is I have to eat more everyday to stay productive, but I am eating only good, clean proteins and carbs. I've lost about 80 lbs in the last 2 years doing this and I feel great. Plus I've learned some cool fighting techniques lol.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

For me, weight loss is all about controlling my diet. It's a hell of a lot easier to cut 500 calories out of my diet than it is to go run 5 miles. If pure weight loss is your goal, then go with a diet where you eat five 100 calorie meals at regular intervals throughout the day, then a lean and green meal whenever you choose. That's allowed me to trim weight fast and not starve since I'm eating often. Two keys to that approach is that you have to stick to 100 calorie meals, no cheating. Just adding 30 calories for each meal means you've gotten at least 150 extra calories that day. The other key is to not eat out. Period. Go shoot some extra game this hunting season and have game meat with a salad for dinner instead of going out to a restaurant. You'll lose weight if you adhere to this diet.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

Other have already touched on it, but it is about calories. I use MyFitnessPal to track my calories and it is pretty dead on. If you don't plan on working out, just set it up to lose 1LB per week and stick with it. If you plan on working out pretty hard several times a week, then set it up to lose 1/2LB or to maintain your weight and the exercising will burn enough calories to put you at a deficit.

As far as what to eat, it is always better to eat clean foods. The Paleo Diet is a great start. I've been on the Paleo Diet for over a year, but I still track the calories when I want to lose or gain weight, depending on what I'm doing. But no matter what diet you are on, if your goal is to lose weight, it is all about calories. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

1. Eat something as soon as you get up --- gets your metabolism started up after sleep mode

2. Drink at least 8 cups of water per day

3. Eat three meals per day

4. Don't eat high sugar/carb food (keep carbs below 30g/day)

Re: Weight, loss tips.

I have been on the Primal diet after seeing a post here recommending the diet. I lost 28 lbs. in exactly 2 months, a 14% weight loss. I am exercising a little more (walking and sit ups) and that helped but has not been the entire cause of my loss. I am following the diet reasonably close but eat as much as I want. I follow what my body wants, eating a lot on occasion and skipping meals when I am not hungry. This diet is working well for me but I know everyone is different.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

When my wife was activated and deployed in early 2003, I lost a hair over 30 lbs in a month eating pretty much nothing but fried baloney sandwaches.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

Eat as soon as you get up in the morning and workout an hour later. A good cardio based weight training workout in the a.m. is good to start your metabolism.

(In the morning I eat a 6 egg-white omelet with 2 yolks and add ham or turkey with veggies. 50g of carbs for energy)

Cardio based weight training in the a.m. and weight training in the evening.
(A tablespoon or two of honey and some peanut butter about 30 minutes before workout for fuel. Drink a protein shake immediately after the workout)

If you try to starve yourself or cut down your portions to the point that you feel like your starving and getting hunger pangs in your stomach, that is your body using muscle as fuel rather than fat. Your body will recognize that it isn't getting the fats it news for fuel and it will store the fat you do have, and start burning muscle.

NO CARBS AFTER 2pm!!!

Get a good nights sleep to allow your muscles enough time to recover. A six day workout program with one or two days of rest is ideal for muscle recovery.

I drink about 2 gallons of water a day and no soda, gatorade (ridiculously high in sugar), and I cut out beers and liquor.

To maintain muscle mass you need to ingest approximately 1g of protein per pound of body weight. If you're trying to loose weight, cut that in half.

I have a great weight training program that I would be happy to send you if you're interested.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

I have never had to lose a significant amount of weight (being that I am a four-sport athlete, 17 years old...) but when I had to cut for wrestling (about 10 pounds) I followed a few simple rules: eat less and excersise.

Eat less: start with eating healthier. Cut out all processed sugars, minimize saturated fat intake, and eat more fruits and vegis than you have previously. Also, get used to drinking lots of water. This keeps your bowels moving and works to clean out the system. At least two 32 oz nalgene bottles a day, plus a big glass in the morning to wake you up. Also, only drink water after 2-3 hours before you go to bed. This is because your body will store food (fat) when you sleep, but during the day won't have time, it just goes straight into your metabolic system.
After a couple weeks when your body is used to the different menu, stat cutting portion sizes. There is no magic number, but just eat until you feel mostly satisfied, and don't get seconds! When I was dropping weight I kept a log of everything I ate to keep track of my self (5 handfuls of M&Ms doesn't look good on there...). Eventually you can keep making the portion sizes smaller, and the results will be retained muscle weight and a lower fat percentage. Try and cut only 2-3 pounds per week. If you are starting out as a heavier person I would suggest watching the (bad) carbs and instead jacking up the fiber and healthy protein and fats. However, if you are already in semi-athletic shape your body needs the healthy carbs as well as the protein and fiber to keep your muscles energized. Avoid overeating on proteins, as excess will be stored away (penut butter kills!!).
I was around 145 when I started cutting and an already low body fat % (probably around 7-8), but I cut to a 5-6%, 136 when it was time to check hydration levels and body fat. I kept the weight off as long as I was participating, but a recurring shoulder injury kept me from doing too much wrestling. Instead I went for runs on my own and came back to the wrestling room for my own workouts and therapy. I still kept the weight off ( I made the 138 class just for S&Gs at a couple meets) and am currently 152, but after a summer full of lifting I am not surprised. I actually was around 156 after track but cross country training over the summer (just made 300 miles!) helped bring body fat down.

Now, for excersising: Start by going for walks/jogs for a period of time you feel comfortable with. Usually around 20 minutes is a good start. This jacks up your caloric burn and is fairly low stress compared to heavy lifting. Keep in mind, running one mile burns around 100 calories, but walking the same mile at a fast pace is only around 75-80 calories. Also, start doing pushups before bed. When my shoulder underwent surgery I started doing pushups every night as soon as I could. Yes, EVERY night. I started with 80-100, minimum, and sustained it until I felt I could be doing more. I have kept a minimum of 150 for the past year or so, often going up to 250, 300, 350 a night total. Don't try and do it in one shot, start by doing sets of 10, 20, 30, whatever you feel comfortable with. I did a 100 set last night, and that is very close to my max. Also, change it up every night. Do sets going up (10, 20, 30, 40, 50), going down (vice versa), all the same (5x30, 3x50), or so you hit a total number each set (40+10, 30+20, and 20+30) with a short break between mini-sets. Change up hand positions (wide, close) and tempo (fast, slow). Also mix it in with other workouts, like pull-ups or sit-ups.The key is to vary the workouts. Make sure you are pushing yourself, but for goodness sake don't hurt yourself.
After you are used to push-ups you can start going for longer runs or walks, as well as mix in weights 3-5 times a week. Again, vary the workouts. Dumbbells, kettlebells, dead weights, try all of them. It is important to keep your body guessing to avoid the plataue. Mix in rope climbs, jump rope, boxing, agility ladders. Stay entertained by trying new things, but kick your butt by using classic, proven workouts.

The main thing is, everyone is different. The above worked for me because I made it up based on what was working. I stayed with 3 main meals a day, with a light snack, usually a piece of fruit, before practice. I knew I would overestimate on how much to eat for five to six smaller meals, so I stuck to larger meals where I knew I wouldn't go overboard. Try different methods, but the overall plan for every one of them is the same: eat less and excersise!

Re: Weight, loss tips.

Last year I lost about 20 pounds doing the paleo style diet, eating only meat and vegetables. I cut out anything I couldn't eat without having to process. felt better than I ever have. Then my wife got pregnant and said the smell of my food made her sick and it got hard cooking for both of us with different diets. Gained it all back this year.

Now my wife wants to lose weight so she's willing to give it a go again. Hopefully in conjunction with bike riding to my school I can knock the pounds back off.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

If you want to lose your weight then get up early in the morning, go for a walk or jog for about half an hour, stay in fresh air and drink a lot of water. Never miss your breakfast, you can have juices and vegetables in your breakfast but eat because it's a misconception among many people that if you want to lose weight then you should stay hungry, no, manage a diet plan along with your exercises and food. Be on your feet most of the time and avoid eating oily, fatty and junk food.

the only thing that bugged me about going Paleo (other than missing out on some of junky things I like) is I always felt hungry, I suppose I was still missing something in my diet to offset that. although I lost a lot of weight, it seemed like I was always eating.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

BUY KETTLEBELLS.

Then hit them 4 times a week. (see YouTube for workouts)

Only drink water, no sense on wasting calories on liquids.

And control your portion sizes.

KBs are a hell of a workout, you will not be disappointed with the results

Really? Please show me results where lifting will reduce more weight than cardio.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

muscle burns calories, the larger the muscle the more calories it burns even at rest. you still need cardio though. mix it up to keep your body guessing.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

Loosing weight is very hard at first, one to two weeks. But once you have momentum (i am sure thas spelled wrong) it becomes easier.

This is the fast way

Protein shake for breakfast, good protein powder and a cup and a half of 2% milk and a few ice cubes, blend

2 hrs later, 1 banana

Lunch either another shake or can of tuna and 4 crackers, or a grilled chicken breast no seasoning

2 hrs later 1 banana

Dinner low seasoned steak, or grilled chicken breast, side of broccoli and one slice or bread. Or cut the steak up into thin strips pan fry with no oil or butter maybe some seasoning sauce place in tortilla with one sppon of sour cream. But no bread on side.

Repeat next day

No food after 7pm, if iyou must have another shake but try not to.

Take multi vit every day, one asprain

Workout every day for 45 min to an hour and a half
Dont work the same muscel groups every day
Beginner
Cardio for 20 min this should be hard but not fall over dead hard (stair climb, light jog, or bicycle. Best results are from hard as you can for a min or 2 then slower but not resting for the same amount of time then repeat for 20 min, never go more than 45 min of cardio for fat loss.
Lift for 20 min
Abs for 5 to 10 min

Re: Weight, loss tips.

The trick is with the above diet to never be dtarving but never be full. Keep your body fueled and that will increase fat loss, one to two meals a day makes your body retain more and 3 meals just isnt enough to get it burning. 5 to 6 small meals a day flips a switch in your body and makes it work faster and retain less fat.

Ill plan a basic workout for you if you want. Loosing weight is really hard with a family or even just being married. You must rely on yourself to do it and with others around you get tempted all the time. Going out to dinner, wife snacking in front of the tv, or the kid eating a burger. That is really hard to turn away from. Just get it in your head food is fuel and nothing more. Feeling insecure lasts all day a cheese burger lasts five min and stays on your belly for weeks. Been there, this works.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

P.s. Your gonna poop water for a week on this diet. Thats your body cleaning itself and expelling nothing but stuff it didnt use. Nice though becuase you'll poop a lot less too. ideally you should poop once a day if you are more than that you are eating too much. Dont count the first week or two, cause its a little scary. Good luck, this works quickly. Trust me.

Did I ever say that lifting caused weight loss? No.

I said cardio is NOT needed for weight loss, you can sit your ass on the couch all day everyday, and lose weight, calories in<calories out.

It is easier to not eat that 300 calorie doughnut, that to run your ass off to try and burn it off.

But in the end, if you want to be a smaller version (skinny fat) of the current fat body, then don't lift, don't eat protien, just eat salads and jog.

Good luck

Why so many meals, and why no eating after 7:00. Meal timing is irrelivant, you can eat one meal or ten, it does not matter, this diet would be a boring pain to stick to. But if it works for you, great.

Not sure about your workout, why are abs most of your lifting routine?

Re: Weight, loss tips.

This is another one of those threads that all i can do is sit back and shake my head.

Everybody suggestion that this workout is better than the other on , that weights cause weightloss more than cardio other argue that cardio causes more weight loss , suggestions on some cracked out starvation diets.

I swear to gawd some of you guys read way to much fucking mens health or watch to much Dr. Oz or somthing !!

Duanee , the first thing you need to do is pick a regment that works for you , if its weight training 3-4 days a week or just walking your dog every day pick somthing and stick to it.
Next , keep an accurate log of EVERYTHING you put in your mouth and stallow , every sip of Starbucks coffee down to every pice of candy you swipe fro the kids easter basket , get it all logged , and from their start adjusting your diet.

second , If you pick some "diet" and lose 20 pounds then go back to the lifestyle that failed you in the first place then you are going to gain the fat back.

Third , dont get fixiated on looking at the scale , you want fat loss , not weight loss <span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-weight: bold">ITS NOT THE SAME </span></span>!!

If you dont or havent weight trained in the past and start doing so you <span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-weight: bold">CAN NOT </span></span>use the scale to gauge your progress as it is perfectly plausable to actualy gain weight but lose inches around your waist. It is a proven fact that resistance training burns more calories than cardio alone and as you gain muscle mass your calorie burning will increase even if the ammount of time doing work does not , more muscle burns more calories plain and simple.

Cardio [b<span style="text-decoration: underline">]IS NOT </span>[/b]needed to lose body fat , fat loss comes from better nutrition , the less you move the better your diet has to be , if your diet is laxed then you must move more to burn those sloppt calories , combine a perfect diet with more movement and you will lose far more fat than one of the other alone

Cardio [b<span style="text-decoration: underline">]IS NOT </span>[/b]needed to lose body fat , fat loss comes from better nutrition , the less you move the better your diet has to be , if your diet is laxed then you must move more to burn those sloppt calories , combine a perfect diet with more movement and you will lose far more fat than one of the other alone </div></div>

Exactly.

I was seriously contemplating never returning to this section of SH again, until you posted. It's amazing how many experts there are on weight loss and fitness in general.

To the OP: JJones is spot on. Find a physical activity that stimulates your brain and you don't mind repeating. Your diet is what is going to determine whether or not you accomplish your weight loss goals. As JJones stated, <span style="font-weight: bold">log every single thing that goes in your mouth</span>. It's impossible to give you advice on which direction to take to reach your goals if we don't first know exactly where you are.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

According to what I learned in my college nutrition class, the timing of the meal is not important and there aren't any scientific studies to back up that eating late=weight gain. However, I think it does cut back on "late night snacking" for most people, which helps with their diet. I think most people take in too much protein as well. When I first started working out it was all about 1g of protein per 1 lb of body weight, but sports nutritionists would suggest a little less than that. Strength training athletes should take in between 1.2-1.7g per kg. If you find it hard to change your diet, start by subtracting certain things from your mean (like ranch dressing). Most people get a lot of extra calories from what they drink, especially soda drinkers. Also, a lot of people hate on carbs, but you NEED carbs for optimal energy and brain function. Just make sure you're taking in the right type of carbs and not the simple ones.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

The type of carb you have doesnt matter nearly as much as what you eat with that carb source. I idid a series of test eating differant carb sources and checking blood glucose before durning and after and found that their was little differance in the bodys insulin response to things like fruit compaierd to brown rice and sweet potatoes.

<span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-style: italic">Carbs</span></span> are <span style="font-weight: bold">NOT</span> esential to body function , Glucose is esential for brain function but the body can and will make glucose from protein when no carbs are available , and this is why a high protein diet is recomended when carbs are low , the dietary protein will help spare the muscles from being broken down for fuel.

Glucose if the prefered fuel for the body and its easly made from eating carbs , the trouble wiuth carbs is that when we eat to many we have an excess of glucose and that excess is quickly stored to fat so we must limit out carb intake to out energy expendature..

Now , to the topic of carbs and their insulin response.
Insulin is a storage hormone , when we eat ANYTHING the body will produce some insulin to deal with those nutrients transport. When alot of carbs are eaten alot of insulin is made to quickly store that fuel before it gets away.

If you eat carbs by them self then their will be a significant spike in BG no matter what the carb source is , their is little differance between pineapple and brown rice , but if you add a little fat to that or some fiber then this slows the digestion thus lowering the insulin response , that why renound trainers like Chris Acceto recomend at least 10-15g fat with EVERY meal as it will lower the insulin response and for those that dont know the body won't readly burn fat for energy when insulin is presant.

I prefer to eat my carbs from fruit and yams as theiur are more healthier and taste better and dont bloat my gut like rice and oats do and i only eat them around my training for the most part , i try to limit their intake when im going to be seditary and not needing the fuel.

Not to piss on anybody campfire but ALOT of what is tought in nutrition classes is old outdated info and has since been debunked.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

Maybe it is. I only thought it might have some value because my professor was fairly young and works as a nutritionist for athletes. The book was relatively new, but I understand that in nutrition and kinesiology, things can get out dated very fast.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

My aim is to focus on nutrition and fitness and lose weight the right way. Luckily, I think I've found a <a href="http://slimmingpoint.com/the-dukan-diet/
" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">weight loss plan</a> that looks balanced and nutritious to me as of now.

Re: Weight, loss tips.

I dont mind the work or diet, I just hate the hunger pains in between meals and after workouts (after protein sup.)
Anyone got good reccomendations to kill hunger pain.
