Weird question about AICS long action magazines

I am wondering if anyone here has ever used a short action caliber(.243) in AICS 300 WM magazines?

The reason I'm asking is that I have a savage long action that is currently chambered in .243 Win. I'm really considering a XLR chassis which dictates that I match the chasis to the action length and I want to see if anyone here has tried this in the past? Did it feed correctly? Any other problems that I'm not thinking about?

Thanks Guys

Re: Wierd question about AICS long action magazines

I puta cdi bottom metal on my savage they make a la dbm that takes Ai sa mags. I tried a aw 300 mag and the rounds were slope even with my 6.5x284. Hope this helps

Re: Wierd question about AICS long action magazines

So the rounds feed slopy? But they feed? I think that I'd have to alter the feed lip geometry a little but I want to make sure that the length of the lips does not prevent the rounds from feeding properly.

Thanks

Re: Wierd question about AICS long action magazines

I am feeding a 280AI out of a 300WM AICS amg and others are getting the 284 to feed from them. I would say the 243 would be doable but maybe need some lip work to make it function 100%. You get your hands on an HS PRecision Mag feedlip tool and you should have no issues making it work.

The middle mag has a 280AI round in it which the mag is unmodified at the time of the pic. The 280AI comes from the 280 which has relations with the 30-06 which in turn I think has some relation with the 308 case family.

Re: Wierd question about AICS long action magazines

The 300 WM mags will more than likely need the feed lips closed up to run the 243 case out of it. The guys running AI's on the -06 and the 284 parent case have the benefit that the shoulder diameter stays put in the WM feed lips.

Guys running regular 270/280/30-06 from 300 WM mags have a tool available to them via Sinclair to close the lips up properly and snug up the feeding.

It can be done, it just takes a modicum of work to do it.

Re: Wierd question about AICS long action magazines

Thanks for the information guys. I think that I'm going to score one of the HS precision feedlip tools and see what I can come up with. Hopefully I don't end up with a magazine fed single shot.

We'll see what happens.

I'm running 6.5x55 in AI .300WM mags in my Tikka. I don't see any real problems, apart from the feed lip adjustments already mentioned. I put the tops/lips of my mags in a bench vise and gave them a slow and careful squeeze. Hardly any was needed (I can't really even see the difference with the naked eye). I don't think the .243 would be all that different. Also, I can fit six rounds of 6.5x55 in a five round mag!;)

But the .280 and 6.5x55 are long action cartridges anyway, i think he's after someone with experience running a S/A cartridge in a L/A mag. The problem i have seen is the cartridge popping out of the mag once it leaves the feed lips.
