I can not how Heroin has become as wide spread as it is as quickly as it has unless there are public officials who are profiting from it.

Some days I wonder if the "rehab industry" is part of the problem or part of the solution.

Feel free to tell me I'm an idiot, I know that already! But if we are gonna work on this problem we are gonna need some stiff penalties for corrupt judges.

Supply and demand. The channels were there already, its just what traveled on them. Once the supply of big farma pill form heroin got dried up, people turned to the real deal. Was it this bad in the years after Jimmy? That was about the time of the last heroin epidemic wasn't it? I was just a little kid. We find syringes all over our small town, 8000 people. We stayed at a hotel on the good side of Denver last week after a show at red rocks. Syringes out back, and the attendant was all tracked up.

I've always wondered where the base ingredients for opiates come from.
Maybe they can "manufacture" that version.
These represent a large portion of the pain industry.

Diver, I think this is part of the plan in the ghettos to create more poverty and violence.

But the poppies will still grow, and we will continue to need to interdict the trafficking of their end product.

fentanyl is bad enough, but it's crazy when they start cutting it with carfentanyl.

Rthur, to answer your question, non-synthetic opioids come from poppies. The synthetic versions come from a few big pharma companies that have cornered the market. I used to work in the workers comp arena for one of the big health care companies. You would not believe what we saw in our analysis. The fentanyl you see on the streets is usually in the powder form, however it comes in many different delivery vehicles. They have lollipops (bucal lozenges), they have strips that melt in your mouth (just like the breath fresheners), they have patches, there's even nasal sprays. As the feds and states started clamping down on the prescription opioids, herion became big. It's a mess and it is not going away anytime soon.

Heroin use has exploded due in part to the doctors over prescribing pain killers. Patients get hooked, the prescription runs out, and it's too expensive on the black market. So they turn to heroin because it's cheaper, and as effective as the opiate based pain pills. Like said before, the supply chains are well established, even more so than black market pain pills.
