Well said, my extensive training with the .308 MK4 and Harris makes me adore the three in combination dearly. I will say though. I do prefer the Atlas for versatility. My shorties though wear Harris bipods to keep size down. But Atlas is my current preference of the two.

I would send the broken bipod back to Harris for repair/replacement.

I would also consider buying one of the Badger, ADM or Arisaka units that replaces the standard Harris mounting plate and allows you to mount the bipod to a picatinny rail.

I only buy mine used from the Hide PX and it’ll take some getting use to but you’ll enjoy it once you figure it out.

The Harris is inferior in quality, materials, features, and design to an Atlas. Just as an Atlas is inferior to some $1000 F-Class / Prone Bipod. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t work.

That being said, I’ve run a Harris for years on my 308’s and 6.5’’s and have never had one go out on me, and I have never felt handicapped because of it. I still run one to this day on my 22LR but I also run an Atlas Cal on my 6.5 comp gun. When the Harris goes out, I will replace it with an Atlas. Harris does not compare to an Atlas in regards to the above stated elements and it is priced as such.

I have also never seen anyone use a 6-9 Harris Bipod, Atlas, or F-Class / Benchrest Bipod for anything but bench or prone. I would be very interested in seeing some one who has.......

If you can afford an Atlas, grab one and you’ll realize why they are priced the way they are. If you cannot afford an Atlas, grab another Harris. It’ll work just fine, mine always has. You’re not going to miss a target because you’re running a Harris and not an Atlas...

I would consider that in the same category as shooting off of a bench. It’s a supported position, body position changes but the front of the rifle is supported in the same manner when using your bipod, regardless whether it’s a bench, table, barricade, joint of pipe etc.

BTW, I agree with you. My statement was in regards to a previous poster recommending an F-Class Bipod while stating a Harris / Atlas is only good for shooting off of your bellly or bench..........

Well then you are stretching your definition pretty thin from "bench or prone" to anything that could be considers a flatter position which covers a lot more areas to shoot from and makes it a much more useful tool.

Cheap bipods are an issue, dont' be fooled, the Harris is normally out of square and will hinder your shooting whether you want to believe it or not. Open a Harris and check its dimensions, it's off, I guarantee it. The bipod matters.

We have proven this in class time and time again, just recently, in fact, I posted about it. We had a shooter with a Harris on a hunting rifle, he was doing everything we taught 100% correctly and still, he just could not get the groups below 1.25" in size. We simply switched his bipod to an Elite Iron and Bang, his groups' size dropped in 1/2 --- fucking 1/2 just by switching the bipod.

Yes, you can get away with just about anything, that is the dirty little secret in Precision Rifle shooting, shitty gear will get you by, especially if you don't know any better but quality gear pays for itself in the long run. In fact, I was at MHSA yesterday and we were just talking about this as certain customers will buy the same inexpensive stuff over and over and never learn the lesson. The stuff will break, it will not work as advertised but they keep coming back and to the same place because of cost.

You get what you pay for, The Harris is the lowest common denominator out there and has not changed in how many years. Sure you can shoot competition with a Harris because there is barely any real prone shots and the targets can absorb the error, but that doesn't make it right.

The TBAC is designed because the current Army Spec does not allow for a Harris style, not even an original Atlas, (See CAL) the military has looked at everything and decided they needed a change. The new specs changed everything because guys realized we have a $10k sniper rifle with a shitty $85 bipod so let's remedy this.

Bipods MATTER, I don't care you can get away with anything, hell I saw a guy show up to an F Class Match in Raton with a Pipe Wrench for a Bipod, he shot one day until he embarrassed himself beyond belief and left. Go shoot an F Class F/TR match with a Harris and you'll quickly realize why they use the bipods they do.

Bipods are physics if you want to argue physics have at it, but you are wrong the design matters. The legs, the apex, the construction matters.

We’re on the same page man, and I think we’re splitting hairs. A previous poster stated “An Atlas / Harris is only good for shooting off a bench or your belly.” Well that’s kind of no shit statement to me I would like to see a 6-9” or 9-13” used for something besides that....

My point is, could you be standing behind that bench? Is the bipod deployed the same? Yes. The bipod is deployed the same regardless whether you’re shooting off your belly in the prone, sitting behind a bench, standing shooting off the hood of a car, kneeling behind a barricade. Does it make all those scenarios easier. Absolutely. It is an extremely useful tool. Beats having to drag that 50lbs sand bag out of pack to shoot off! ?And there’s not a bipod out there in that height range that’s gonna do anything more than that. If someone thinks that a 6”-13” Bipod is only good for bench or prone, well no shit. Show me another bipod in that range that does more.....

That’s a good scenario, but it doesn’t fit everything.

In order to be consistent and successful you need to have all the elements in the formula working together. The Shooter, The Optic, The Weapon System, and The Ammo. Remove anyone of those, and your success rate deteriorates.

You ain’t gonna hit shit with a crooked arrow, weak bow, or a blind Indian.

This may as well be a Ford vs Chevy debate, and if it works for you, that's all that matters.

Having said that, there are plenty of reports of the Harris breaking at the well point pictured. Particularly as they find themselves off of belly and bench and supporting full grown gorilla shooters leaning into them on barricades and the like.

The whole "they deploy faster" thing is just stupid. Honestly, most of the people competing remove the bipod entirely if it won't be used on the stage. If it will be used, the legs are down ready to go prior to the buzzer.

I think the scenarios where you're going to save a whole extra second deploying the legs, on the clock, are pretty limited.

I don't see hardly any (maybe one over the years) story about a busted Atlas. Kasey is a salt of the Earth guy who stands behind his stuff and continually releases new models and designs to keep up with the trends in our sport.

I don't see anybody from Harris doing that, same design as always, no presence on the forum or at matches that I can think of. I see B&T / Atlas stuff on prize tables constantly.

If you want to rock a Harris, party on Wayne. Is it superior to an Atlas, not IMO.

What part is non sense? Hunting-Harris, match-Harris. The only thing I use an Atlas for is for shooting off a bench mainly with my 22lr. There is nothing an Atlas does better than a Harris.

The smart ass in me couldn’t resist. Does more than 40% more height adjustment range (4.25” to 9” vs 6” to 9”) and 150% more leg angle positions (0, 45, 90, 135, 180 degrees vs 0, 90 degrees) not count as doing something better?

Also, I have no dog in this fight, I have an old Atlas and an old Harris. Both work, I use the Atlas the most because it’s what I have become the most comfortable using over time. The Atlas is undeniably better quality, but that means almost nothing in how it works in use. I’ve never noticed any change in my personal accuracy behind any of my rifles between the two bipods. I prefer the Atlas because I already have it, it is more adjustable than the Harris, and is higher quality. I never shoot under time pressure, so the approximately 0.3 to 1 second difference in how long it takes to deploy the Atlas legs vs the Harris is literally meaningless to me.
