Went to a crazy auction

I went to an estate sale in a small rural town (Hinton Okla.) which had a lot of firearms for sale. Let me tell you, either people have more money than sense or the firearms buying has really gone crazy. Point in fact, used Rem. 870 20ga youth model, $550; Ruger 10-22 22mag, $1,200; Ruger P90 45cal, $750; Glock 17 gen. 4, $750. I can buy the same model Glock tomorrow for $534 from a local retailer. Needless to say I didn't stay around to bid on the three Belguim Browning A5's

The reason the prices are so high is many in Oklahoma are not the most trusting of the government. They are buying guns with little to no paper work. Prove I have that gun officer. Yes your correct about to much money but that is the reason why they are doing it.

No it wasn't a widows auction, just people with a lot of money.

Oklahoma is a gun friendly state for sure and yes many don't trust the government but I don't necessarily believe that was the driving force behind the excessive spending. I think many there weren't too well versed in used firearm prices. If I ever have to sale any of mine I hope to have the same audience though.

It sounds as though they had a good autioneer who knows how to read the crowd and up the price with phantom bids by non-existant customers.

it's an auction and people get stupid at auctions...get a good auctioneer, competitive bidding and the price will skyrocket. In the charged atmosphere, people forget the retail/going rate of an item and just want to win the bid...the "he's not going to outbid me" mentality.

Doubt very seriously that those guns weren't transferred by a dealer to the winning bidders, therefore they would have to do the same amount of paperwork as if they bought them from the local gun shop.

Private auctions in Okla. that I've been to don't require FFL paper work. There were dealers there but they generally don't pay these prices and stay in business very long.

Back in the 80s, the White County, Tn sheriff's department would auction confiscated guns. I saw Jennings and Raven .22s go for $150. Those old men in overalls had the first penny they ever pinched and could not stand to be outbid. Around here, 870 Wingmasters will bring $650.
