I dont blame PG&E one bit for doing this. They got blamed for the "Camp fire" that destroyed the city of Paradise. They got hit with something like 8 billion dollar fine/settlement. From a business standpoint what would you do.

PG&E did this a month ago for a couple days and there were 7-9 fires started by personal generators. Here is the story of one.

The biggest thing is there is not an eye witness account of any power lines causing the camp fire. Only speculation.

There have been fires in the past that have been proven as structures have been found on the ground. Dealing with forces of nature can be a challenge. Just when you think you have a leg up on mother nature she is going to remind you how insignificant you really are in the world.

We're talking about high tension lines not what happens when they are put through transformers. Other than the difference in phase, the amplitude of the voltage vectors for each phase are identical. Hence, in a Delta Connection the Line Voltage is equal to Phase Voltage. Not sure why you are bringing phase to ground into it. The high tension lines are live and completely isolated from ground...or you better hope you aren't near it

Current is another matter entirely and the line current is SQRT(3)*phase current.

Without a diagram to show the concept, it is difficult to explain.

The original supposition was two of the lines would touch and create an issue via sparks. I don't believe that would happen.

Phase 1 will be at peak (1) while P2 and 3 are at (-0.5)

P1 peak to P2/3. COS(120) = -0.5

Most systems are valued at the phase to phase voltage as that will always be correct no matter if Delta or Wye system.

It happened down here 2 years ago, the whole state lost power.

I doubt that you will and that's what I was inferring earlier especially after the linemen described how the lines work.

I have done the fly over thermal imaging and our firm does substation work. A lot of things have to happen for a "fire" to happen and the higher the line the more difficult it can become.

There is enough instrumentation on these systems and enough inspections for them to know approximate condition and when voltage/current changes due to a P2P or P2G or even induction type fault. ( that's how they detect and narrow people stealing power and find faults during outages sometimes)

Not down to the pole but to the grid area yes. ( plus hey can detect these often in real time)

I would like to see the actual investigation and RCFA telling me exactly when, where and how the PG&E system caused the fire.

Also the other part of the fire triangle and tetrahedron, the fuel.

You can have a failure that heats or arcs and starts a fire but its land management that makes it get out of control quickly. That's just as important a contributing factor.

Other than a spark, O2, and some pine needles, what else is needed for a fire?

Who's the person stealing primary power? Are they going down to Walmart and buying a primary power transformer to steal this power?......or are you suggesting they are hooking their RV up to 12.47 or 7.2kV to power their microwave, so they can heat up their KFC?

It's typically fairly easy to find the source and cause of ignition of a fire, we have thousands of people that do it daily in this country.

What's the land management that prevents a forest fire? Should we just remove a large swath of trees every mile to prevent the spread of fire, who is paying for this?
