What’s a good powder for subsonic 300 black out?

Is there a “go to” powder for subsonic 300 black out? CFE Black is a joke and a terrible powder. You would think a powder that’s designed around the 300 black out would meter better.
Anyway, my buddy uses accurate 1680 and I’ve shot some of his loads and works great. Only problem is, I can’t find it anywhere due to the current situation.



Anyone else have a favorite powder for subsonic 300?

Also, not sure what being thrown out of your likely static charged hopper has to do with being a “good powder.”

5.5gr unique under cheap 150gr projectiles. Damn quiet, but obviously won't cycle a semi.

CFE BLK has always metered well for me. Weird.

VV N120 and use it on 180 grain to 220-grain bullets and keeps the speed around 900-1000fps. Pistol gas system with a can and adjustable gas block.

IMR 4227, IMR 4198, Accurate 5744, Reloader 7, Win 296, will all work but I like Accurate 1680 best.

Shooters World Blackout is optimized for heavy subs. SW SOCOM is good to run supers and subs. Both stay in stock far longer than the more well known alternatives and seem to pop in stock about every 2 weeks between PV and Midsouth. Just another couple options to throw out there.

Like the others said though, something else is going on if CFE isn't metering well enough.

I’ve used H110, trail boss and CFE black all without issue. All meter and drop fine for me out of a hornady L&L AP.

I'm running IMR 4198 under a 220 gr bullet. Has worked well for me in the 10 - 11 gr range, and meters fine out of my Dillon progressive (well enough for semi auto ammo anyway).

Are you using Trail Boss with any of the heavier bullets? I see Hodgdon lists load data for it, but only up to 150gr bullets.

No, 125 gr were all I shot with TB. Used H110 and CFEBlk and I forgot 1680 for 200+ gr

IMR 4227 works well for sub loads for me.

"A" good powder? For 300BLK? There are dozens of great powders. That's one of the most awesome things about reloading for that cartridge. There is such a wide selection you can tinker around creating loads for years.

In my experience though powder selection depends on the bullet and what the desired end result is. For an extremely quiet load out of a semi auto the best I've found so far is Accurate #9 and a Hornady 225grain bullet.

I've used 1680 and IMR 4227 for subsonic 300BO, currently prefer 4227.

CFE Blk and 1680 are the two best subsonic powders. For a while 1680 was really the only one you could get to function easily with subsonic loads of every kind.

H110 is what I use, as well, because I am shooting 150 grain FMJ bullets, at supersonic speeds, out of a 16" barrel.

what do you mean meter better? My CFE meters just fine. The only issue I have with it is it makes a mess because they roll out the spout easy from any breeze or fart when I grab the pan.

A1680 works very well for subs and supers. That’s what I use. CFEBlk may do the same not sure.

AA1680 is my go to. Been testing CFE Black with 220smk subs and it's been awesome. Stupid quite and stupid accurate in my 10.5" Rainier Ultramatch sbr...

Cfeblk will run the action pretty much way lower than what you would think.

Makes it noisy, but a good trade in my book.

1680 is dead reliable too of course for subs.
