What’s the general consensus on OAL with Bergers?

I hardly ever shoot Bergers, mostly because of cost. Recently I got a bunch on trade for my .223 and I was just curious if most people are jumping, loading to the lands, or jamming Bergers.

I realize every gun is different, but I was curious where I should start. I know a lot of people recommend .01-.02” off the lands, but I seem to always have issues with a jump.

Am I good to touch the lands and just do OCW? Didn’t want to waste bullets or time if loading to the lands or a jump with Bergers generally doesn’t work.

I'm no pro at this so take this with a grain of salt but I started with .050 jump with the 230gr OTM tacticals and got 1/2 moa 5 shot groups at two nodes during my first ladder test. It was good enough for the ranges I'm working with so I didn't refine the jump any further.

If you are asking about the vld type bullets I have always had best luck with them touching or .005-.008" in the lands. That is in both a 243win and 300wm. In my 308win the 175vld shot decent with a long jump but that was due to the long lead in the Remington barrel not being to friendly to setting them out to the lands.

VLDs start touching or with a LIGHT jam,,,,hybrids start .020 off...if they make a 223 hybrid?

I used to jam with Berger VLD until I read their solution.

I now do OCWs at -0.010 and then test best at -0.015, -0.025, and -0.040. My rifles vary from -0.015 to -0.035.
I do not even consider jam.

Good to know. Yea I’m not sure if they consider the 77gr Berger .224 bullet a hybrid, VLD, or neither of the above. If this wind dies down today I’m going to do some OCW at .010” jump and see what happens.

Interesting article. I'm set up with a light jam and will need to try the suggested method. It would be nice to get away from chasing the lands.

I followed that Berger article for all the rifles I shoot with Bergers. My 6 Creed with Hybrids likes a .120" jump best. I never would have tried that far had I not read that article.
