It does the same with Hornady 168 Amax. If I wasn't reloading (or having ammo reloaded for me I should say) I'd be shooting Hornady. </div></div>
Have you tried slowing your 168g SMK load down a bit? I found that with my 24" 5-R shooting 168g SMKs over Varget worked better closer to 2,650-2,670fps which is a bit slow for a 168g SMK at 1,000 yards but very very good out to maybe 850 yards.
So I tried loading up some 168g A-MAXs over IMR4895 and found the same accuracy node but at 2,720-2,730fps which seems to shoot very well past 1,000 yards. The A-MAX bullets seem to go trans-sonic more gracefully than the SMK bullets do. For heavier bullets I'm liking the usual 175g SMK and the 178g Hornady Match bullets over RL-17. All of these loads used Winchester brass with Russian primers. Now I'm playing with a 208g A-MAX load at 2,450fps to see how well they work out past 1,200 yards in the real world.
I'm shooting at low desert altitude, figure 1,200ft elevation.
