I've got a flat top AR and am in need to some folding backup Iron sights. Prices are all over the place. I just can't believe that "polymer" sights are a good choice. What have you guys found to be some of the best values in folding sights?

What's your budget? Any particular features you are looking for in terms of locking (some BUIS lock up while others of spring tension only), shorter sights (like for a POF taller monolithic rail), etc., etc.? What's the max folded height you can have in order for the rear sight to fit under your optics (if any)? Where will you be mounting the front BUIS (handguard, gas block, etc.)?

They are "back up" sights. So having flip ups and being able to get them out of the way is nice.
Don't be fooled, the magpul mbus2 are stout. I think you'd be impressed if you get the opportunity to look them over. I have a pair of Troy buis that I have considered selling to get another pair of magpul. They are a well thought out piece of equipment. As all magpul items are.
If you're stuck on metals, the Troy flip ups are nice, but pricey.
They are "back up" sights. So having flip ups and being able to get them out of the way is nice.

I run MagPul and Troy and I am happy with both. I have not seen any issues with the MagPul on my gun or others at work.

for the rear you might want to look at the GGG Maid. It's super low and both apertures are in the same plane unlike the other sights which have the L shaped dual aperture. I've got 5 of these
If you want/need elevation adjustment I use the KAC micro 200-600. I've got 2 of these on longer range set ups.

I ran the Gen 1 MBUS and had an issue with non co-witnessed front and flat top, so ultimately switched out to steel since I couldn't get enough elevation on the front sight post. I ended up with a flip up front sight integrated with the gas block - I think it was Yankee Hill if I remember right. The other issue is the polymer on a front gas block can get warm...

Presently this is an unfinished AR. I've got a doublstar with a Bushnell holo, a standard front sight and a nonlocking cowitnessed flip up in what appears to be anodized aluminum. I like the look through setup but that may be only because I haven't used other setups. With the holo clearance isn't an issue. Sometimes you just have to payup for good quality other times quality is available for a moderate price. So, in response to the questions: clearance isn't an issue, they need to be functional for shots up to 300 yards (longer than that and I reaching for one of my Savages), locking in the up position is preferable but by no means a deal breaker, $199 for a rear backup sight seems excessive. Does that help anyone identify a good product?

I've ran Troy battle flip-ups for a while, but they get beat up just like anything else. Running magpuls on another rig that sees just as much abuse and personally, I think the polymer sites have held up better to wear, plus they are lighter and cost a fraction of the price.
My favorite combo is on an AR pistol. It consists of a YHM gas block flip up sight and a magpul rear mbus.
Shooting irons is good practice, but if they are just going to be a back up system, weight and durability should be the main focus. No need to spend a ton on sights.

We have probably 100 sets of the magpuls on our PD issued AR's. They have been there for several years. We have not had a single unit break, a single malfunction, none have come loose, nor have I heard of any loss of zero. They are a little larger than most BUIS - but they are worth every cent. They are GTG. I have no qualms about putting these on rifles.

The MagPul BUS are good to go. Definatly a GREAT value, a lot for the money. I've been running a set on my SBR, I've no issues at all.

I have owned the Troy ones and switched to Magpuls. I like the sights, being I am a cheap-ass, and now that I have a kid, I like the price. A complete set for less than either a front or rear piece of the higher dollar ones.

Gonna toss a vote for the matech buis out there. It is a flip up, small aperture sight that runs about $40, rear only. Metal, just make sure not to overtorque it.
I've used mine with a regular FSB on my rifle for about a year now and havent had a chance to break it. It has been in use a couple times, but not abused.

The rear sight only has a single, small aperture so you can't switch to a larger aperture for faster target acquisition like on most rear BUIS. In terms of value, like others have said, the Magpul MBUS are probably your best bet. Relatively cheap and the polymer construction is actually what makes them durable.

I've used Troy, KAC and Magpul BUIS. I continue to use KAC micros on precision guns, but I think Magpul are the most bang for your buck. I think you'd be suprised how durable they are.

Troy's are my favorite. The HK style front you can get is down right awesome and lines up a lot faster than the standard M4 style post. I doubt I will ever use anything but Troy's from now on.
I do really like KAC sites for the rear too as well as the GG&G MAD as well.

I bought the Troy BUIS with the tritium dots (one on the front sight and two on the back). They're nice, but the tritium add isn't worth it to me. I have a pair without that were $80 less and I love them.
The Magpuls are nice and they're economical in comparison to the Troy.
Don't think you'll go wrong either way.

After actually using my rear BUIS, a KAC with the pop-out aperture, I want a sight that locks in the up position. Every time I would reload or move off the line and return, the sight was in the down position. Maybe not all the time, but it was enough for me to want to spend my own cash on a DOD weapon to make it right. If I have to use my BUIS, I want it to work all the time. I instantly saw the virtue of the fixed irons like the LaRue. I have a GG&G that locks that will go on that gun very soon.
