In 1825 during an expedition with a fur trading party in the Rockies, the group Bridger was with was attacked by a grizzly bear, only to find that their rifles and powder horns had been stolen by bandits the night before. Bridger reportedly killed the bear with his hunting knife during a life or death fight after it mauled one of the campers to death.
Married into the Flathead and Shoshone and attained status as 'White Chief' among them for his expert mediation and negotiation skills.
