What barrel to get?

So I want to re-barrel a Savage Model 110 in .270 to a .280AI. This is my first time attempting to re-barrel a rifle myself so I have a lot of dumb questions. I want a 26" stainless barrel with a 1-9 twist. I would prefer to have spiral fluting on it, but I'd deal with regular fluting.

Now, what contour barrel should I get? I'd like a fairly heavy profile, but I want this to still be a rifle that I can carry around. I want to build this rifle as a LR gun, but I want to still be able to take it hunting at times if I choose to.

Any recommendations for a brand and a place to order it? What should I be expecting to spend?

How do I know if I need a large or small shank?

Thanks guys.

Medium Palma is a great all around contour, but if you want a little heavier then go Heavy Palma or M24.

Check out Bartliens Medium Whitley Palma. It looks to be in between the medium and Heavy.

How old/new is your gun. If it's a older Model 110 it will have the small receiver threads of 1.055". If it's a new gun especially the target type action it should have the 1.125" threads.

Take a caliper and measure the barrel diameter right in front of the nut. This should tell you what you have.

I set my old Savage 112v up with out the barrel nut. It allows me to run a larger breech diameter on the barrel. So I normally use either 1.200 or 1.250" breech ends.

If you want to keep the weight down but run a heavier type contour Pusher591 is on the right track. Get one of the Palma contours (my pick would be the medium) or get a Rem. Varmint contour.

Tons of good barrel makers out there. Check out bugholes.com. Lots of stuff in stock and he is a great guy </div></div>

I haven't checked lately but Greg doesn't usually keep Palma contours on hand but 3rd Generation Shooting Supply and Grizzly usually has most contours in stock. Grizzly will probably have more in stock.
