What Bullet for JP SCR11 5.56?

Just got my new JP SCR11 5.56 and wondering what bullet and bullet weight use guys are getting the best results with. I have a 1 in 8 twists in my new JP but 55gr has always been my best weight for my OBR. I want to explore other options before I go to every different bullet weight so I want to check with the JP SCR11 5.56 owners first.

Just so I say this now, I do realize every barrel and every chamber is different within tolerances and even though the bullet or bullet weights you are getting your best results with may not work for me. I'm saying this to avoid any pissing contests. I'm just looking for a starting balance to start with.

I guess it depends on what you are going to use the bullet for? I don't have a JP but have loaded for AR's for the past twenty years. With a 1:8 twist barrel you are good up to a 77 grainer that will load into the magazine's overall length except for the 75 AMAX. I have numerous 8 twist barrels but when I want to shoot a more precision role I always end up with the 77 Sierra's @2.250" OAL that I shoot in my 223 bolt rifle and DPMS Mini-SASS that has a 1:8 twist barrel. If I am just plinking on the range I will probably use 55 grain bullets as they are cheap. If I am hunting with it, I like the Hornady VMAX or Barnes TTSX rounds. It just all depends on what you want to employ the round to do. The .224 bullet line has really increased in versatility and gives a reloader lots of choices to work with depending on the role of the weapon.

That is a gooooood point. I'll need them for paper target and 4"steel plates out to 400 yards.

In my 5.56 OBR i used the Nosler's Varmageddon 55gr black tipped flat base and shoot golf balls at 250 yards. I like to get something higher in weight that will do the same thing for my new JP.

Mine loves 69, 75, and 77 grain loads.

However it never fails to amaze me when it groups under and inch with m193!

All that is needed for a 55gr or less bullet is a 1-14 0r 1-12 twist, 9 twist was meant to shoot the 62gr at around 2600-2800 (I could be wrong, so just relax).

Works great in my 8 twist 3 gun rifle. Better energy at the longer targets than the 55s.

Do you actually have a 5.56 chamber, or a .223 Wylde chamber? Most JPs are .223 Wylde. I have found that the Nosler 69s are +/- with the Sierra 69 SMKs. 60 grain NBTs are also very accurate and for 4" steel plates at 400, running those at about 3000 fps would be my choice. You don't need heavies for 400 yards nor 4" steel plates. When you want to hit flashers and LaRues, past about 300, then the heavy bullets are preferred.

Rob gave you some good advice here, go heavier. I buy my bullets in bulk, 5K per box, last time I bought, it was Hornady 68gr BTHM. Good bullet, but with my load, not warm , the round kind of falls apart between 600 & 700 yards, for the way I shoot today, wish I would have went 75+ class.

For steel @ 400 55's will be fine. Never had a problem moving a MGM flash target w/ 55's. I run *55gr Nosler Ballistic Tips w/ 26gr of H335 @ 1.240 oal. Shoot lights out in every rifle I've tried (including all my JP rifles). 55's are softer than the 75s and allows you to run 55gr fmj for practice and close targets w/ one zero. *Work up to this load. Have gone as high as 26.2 w/ no pressure signs.

That's the weight I was think about 69, 75, and 77. I will start with some Sierra and Nosler's in those weights.

Hey MarkCO, my OBR is wylde buy it only shoots 55gr great. When ever I go into 69 or 77 it always shoot poor. For some reason my OBR only shoots 55gr great. It is hard to nail down what LaRue is really doing and that is why I went with a company like JP this time around.

I run 53gr Vmax @ 3325fps through my 22" SCR11 because it's primarily a coyote / ground squirrel rig and the Vmax works great for that. The 53gr Vmax has a .290BC (best of all the .224 Vmax bullets) and shoots amazingly well in my 22" SCR11 over N133.

The same load also shoots extremely accurately out of my 18" SCR11 but at a lower velocity.

One of these days I need to try some 68, 69, 75, or 77gr loads. When I do use the rifle at the silhouette range the 53gr loads don't have enough energy to knock over the rams at 500M... but I can shoot little groups on them.
