You know not every stock or chassis is like that right? Quite a few can have the bolt come out without messing with the cheekrest. Most all need it removed for cleaning though but my Manners have a clip on the rod going into the stock that you can set it so all you do is pop it back on and it’s at the same height. No messing with it.

I was just wondering if that was true only reason or if you were trying to make it small to pack it.
My understanding is that McMillan used Mr Cross' KMW Loggerhead hardware...until they didn't and then started using their own. A friend of mine has one and we looked at it just the other night and it appears that the part of the McMillan hardware that goes into the butt stock (vice part that goes into the comb) is not nearly as sturdy and rigid as the Loggerhead to the extent that if you tighten is down hard, the sides pull away from the stock.

This is just one example, I have no idea if my friend ham fisted it in the past and messed it up, and I don't want this to be some general condemnation of McMillan.

However, Manners still uses the Loggerhead and indeed it comes with grooved posts and an e-clip so you can remove and replace the comb without having to re-find the proper height.

I had Mr. Ducos install a Loggerhead in my 700 5R SS .308 kind of deer gun and I think its an absolutely wonderful product that was well designed and well manufactured.

If you're interested in an MPA and that's your concern, then don't worry. They placed the cheek rest just behind where the bolt needs to go, and there's a notch in the rest so you have plenty of space to get the bolt out. They also have a removable cheekrest option that pops on and off without you having to adjust the height wheel.

Looking at the MPA Matrix, I don't see that option?

The packing would be nice, but not necessary. It also lacks some other configuration that I should have gotten when I got the McMillian, but I went a bit cheaper than I should have.

What configurations?

Here are a few more pics of the Manners folder with another barreled action I had in it. Just to see the folder. If you like the McMillan feel but want folding and a drop in and go chassis then this is something to look at before buying.

Besides weight, the chassis provides:
  • folding stock
  • more adjustability
  • more modularity
  • easier to adapt to ARCA with no modifications needed, just bolt and go
  • built in dbm (maybe he's running a bdl set up at the moment)
At least those are a few reasons that I did the same thing he's doing and decided to give the AI AX chassis a try and don't regret it.
This is exactly the reasons I am going to chassis over my mcmillans. Add in, mounting my clip-on NV and more compact package because the folding stock.
