I recently picked up a PVS 30 to run on a couple of my long range rifles that I've had a chance to take out shooting a couple times. The other night I was in a wheat stubble field shooting a 2/3 IPSC at 600 yds painted white. Even with my illuminator I was having trouble getting solid definition on that target but I could see the black target stand relatively well.

Would painting my target black make it show up better under NV?

I use black painted steel with a white circle for NV targets, works great. Obviously, once you've turned the white part gray from shooting it you will want to repaint to maintain the sharp contrast. Or, you can dial up/left/right a bit and plug away at it for longer without needing to repaint. Lots of fun and the spark show is hilarious w/ M855, enjoy.

I actually prefer white at night but depends on your environment, sometimes I prefer black depends on what is around the target and how much ambient light I'm getting

I also use white painted targets. Works fine for me. This is at 100y while experimenting with the Luna.

When I shoot with NV at targets in the mountains (mainly clear-cut areas), I've found the shape of the target also helps to identify them easier (rectangles and IPSC look more unnatural and are easier to spot).

So I went out last night and tried the black paint.... for my environment this is the way to go. Tried to snap a picture but my phone was struggling to focus the image. Anyway that's a 2/3 ipsc at 515 yds just up and right from my cross hair. Did not need the illuminator to shoot the black targets.
