Commercial fishing captain, specifically drift gillnetting for salmon.
So tell me, please, is Deadliest Catch for real, partly real, or a bunch of BS????
I can tell you from experience that most of Ice Road Truckers is a bunch of Drama cooked up by an idiot producer, and the real thing--while being a challenge--is not much like the show.
Partly true. Fishing is undeniably, very hazardous. Add in poor weather conditions, rough seas, freezing temps , etc... Not much fun.
The drama however, highly fabricated. A close friend and fellow Skipper stars on a NatGeo series and has explained the ins and outs of making good television; mostly involving artificial drama and out of context audio/video insertions.
Personally, I fish in picturesque Alaska with only one, occasionally 2 crewman. Always in sight of many other vessels and seas never greater than 2-3', though usually flat calm.
We do our best!
And as far as the day job goes, I write reloading manuals, shoot, attend trade shows from Vegas to Nuremburg and anywhere in between, spend time at matches and visiting forums such as this.
It's a dirty job, but somebody HAS to do it!
FX TD (Effects Technical Director)
It's been my post-Army career doing computer graphics for movies. I started out as a 3D generalist but these days everyone is specialized and while I was building things and animating characters for a while, I found that I had more fun making things crash, smash and blow up...virtually. In the last five years or so I've specialized even further and have spent most of the time creating realistic water, smoke and other vapor effects. It used to be a much more artistic process, but these days it's heavily driven by fluid dynamics, so guys with math and physics smarts do well.
I do this as an Aircraft Mechanic Supervisor...
