I have a Remington R15 .223, 24" barrel 1:9 twist. What ammo is the best bang for the buck. Mostly just shooting paper, but will be shooting coyotes this fall and winter.

Re: What factory ammo to use

For a 1:9 twist, I would recommend 68/69 grain bullets. Some barrels can shoot 77gr in that twist, some not. Match 55gr bullets tend to do quite well at close ranges, as well, and should shoot nicely in your barrel.

For "value" ammo, check out Black Hills Remanufactured and Ultramax Remanufactured. Black Hills is a very popular brand with match ammo, but Ultramax shoots very well for me. Both are around $30/50rds, depending on which specific load you pick.

Not if you care anything about accuracy.

Re: What factory ammo to use

Depends on what shooting you are doing. It was about 6 MOA for me when shooting at 100 yards.
This ammo is good for carbine use 200 yards and in. (Maybe 300). When talking about precision shooting, then yes, FGMM, Black Hills is the ammo to use.

62gr Federal Fusion for use while hunting (dogs to deer), especially with your 24" R-15 set-up. Its a very consistent hunting round.

For plinking with decent accuracy, I've had pretty good luck with ultramax.

And for shooting for shootings sake (and my wallet)... WPA 55gr bulk! lol

Re: What factory ammo to use

This may be a decent and affordable compromise.

The word seems to be that Hornady is contracting cartridge casings (primed?) from a 'Eurpoean source'; and my guess would be it's somebody like Wolf/TulAmmo, who really do have a solid handle on the process. For someone like Hornady to label this as Match ammo would appear to me to mean that the bigger part of the homework is being done at the completed ammo fabrication end of the process. I am inclined to give Hornady the benefit of any doubt as to its suitablilty as match/practice ammo.

I have no qualms about using lighter weight bullets in a faster twist, at least for SR/MR distances. I'm feeding my 24" 1:8" twist Stag Super Varminter handloads for 250yd comp based on the Nosler 50gr Ballistic Tip, estimating around 3250fps.

BH blue box 50 gr ballistic tip and 52 gr hpbt are dog town loads with renown magic. Worth a try. I have had a blast with them out to 300. They also have a 69gr hpbt. Heck buy he three boxs and find out.

Re: What factory ammo to use

here are a couple of targets I shot through my Bushmaster 20 inch upper at 100 yards.

The ammo I'm using is HSM ammo-it costs about 32 bucks for a box of 50. Everything is new (including the cases), they just put it all together.

They have a great selection of 223 ammo with lots of different bullets so you can have fun shooting and finding out what your gun likes best-pretty cheaply!!!

Re: What factory ammo to use

OOPS, sorry for the late response.

A guy three benches over from me was shooting a 338 mag with a muzzle brake. Every time he touched it off I swear my hat moved a bit!!! Man that this was LOUD and the blast definitely went a long ways sideward!!!

I happened to touch off that round just as he dropped the hammer on his cannon.

I quit shooting until he was finished and repositioned myself directly BEHIND him!
