Gunsmithing What hunting Caliber for LA re-barrel?

I've got a Sendero in 7RM that I am planning to re-barrel this winter.

It rides in a McMillan Game Warden with factory hinged floor plate and that will go forward.

Primarily a Hunting Rifle.

So should I stick with the 7RM, as I have all the reloading stuff needed and will still have a 7RM to go with the Sendero?

Or go with a 7 SAUM, or something similar that can really thrive in the long action?

I'd like to hear any and all opinions...

Where and what are you hunting ?
Short of polar bears or grizzlys in tight brush there’s nothing on this continent that 7 Rem Mag won’t take care of cleanly and quickly

7-300WM...? plenty of brass... But I have to say, I'd probably stick with a 7mmRM. I had one I hand loaded with 162 AMAX's and it was stupid accurate. As far as factory ammo, you remember years ago when the ammo shelves were bare? There was ALWAYS 7mmRM on the shelf. Go into any walmart or Ace hardware... 7mmRM ammo on the shelves, and there is a huge variety of factory loadings.

I’d stick with the 7RM. If I absolutely had to change, I’m a bit partial to the 300 Win Mag.

7 RM is pretty tough to beat as a hunting cartridge. 28 Nosler if the belt drives you nuts and want more horsepower. Maybe a STW if you want off the shelf ammo more readily available, but even that’s debatable.

Personally, I'd just stick with the 7mm RM. Maybe if it was going to be used for something other than hunting I'd play around with something else, but for a rifle used primarily for hunting it's hard to beat the 7mm RM.

I would go with a larger case. 7/300 Weatherby, 7 STW, etc. I personally use a 7 on the 375 H&H case with standard body taper, 30 deg shoulder. It feeds well. I have also shot a lot with the 7/300 Win Mag. It is about identical for capacity and performance.

I know you said 7mm, if that is the only option, the 7RM. Easy to load shoot and gets the job done.
Other calibers? The 338 RUM, I am getting 2850 with the 300 nosler cc. It is warm but hits really hard, really really hard.

I just went through the same. I have a barrel that still shoots lights out.. but want to spin up a proof to save 2-1/2 pounds ..

I’ll bring my barreled action to Spartan Rifles Monday -

Anyway, my decision of staying with the 7RM or going to the 28 Nosler came down to:
1- 28 is expensive brass and less factory ammo available when traveling.
2- 7RM, the current last couple barrels shot lights out with plenty of speed. 168s going from 3100+ one hole groups to the solids mandated in my state at 3,225fps.. just do not need more gas.

So my plan is now to stay with the 7mm and switch between barrels just to keep barrel life longer for the Proof. Plus I’ll have very little load work and do not need more dies..

Also never had any feed or base issue with the rimmed case so that argument hadn’t really been an issue.

if you have all the reloading gear, I would just stick with 7RM... and throw the extra $$ you saved on a proof barrel.
