Not sure if i should ask this in the reloading forum or the ELR forum but seems to me to more of a reloading question maybe a stupid question forum lol.
I have been working up some loads for ELR shooting with my 338 LM. My question is what is an exceptible ES or SD? My retumbo loads are pretty stable and "ok" accurate at 300, 600. They get a little better at 800 and 1000 have not gone further than that yet but getting there. By ok 2"-3" 4 shot groups at 300, 600 is average about 4 shots in 5.00" and at 1000 best has been 4 shots in 4.5" and an average of about 8.00" like i said nothing special. But not horrible either. My issue with the retumbo is it is pretty slow 2710 fps with a SD of 5 fps and an ES of 2705 to 2715. Tis is consistant over 10 of so shots at several temps from 30 degrees to 71 degrees. I have noticed vert stringing at 300 and 600 yards most of my groups ar much taller than wide at those ranges. 800 and 1000 yards the groups are more "square". With the edge going to horz. spread being wider than vert. Spread. So the question is do i stick with that?
In the quest to get more speed and try something diff. I have tried using wc867 in my 338 LM. Now with speed this does much better than the retumbo load i am getting on average of 3000 fps and accuarcy has been very good so far average group at 300 yards is 4 shots in 1.50" best 1.25" and worst around 2.00 but this is over 5 sets of groups just checking and rechecking vel. And impact on paper. Most of the groups will have 2 touching or almost touching and one with in 1 to 1.5 inches. Vert spread is avearge of about .75" so groups are a little more square at 300 i have not got to shoot them at 600, 800 or 1000 yet. Now the problem is when i look at the chrony i see the fastest at 3010 and that is at 82 degrees outside temp. And the slowest at 2995 at 82 degrees outside temp. I have tried these through the chrony at 60 degrees also i was getting low of 2880 and a high of 2987 an es 7 fps and sd of 3.5. And at outdoor temp of 40 degrees i was getting 2970 to 2975 an ES of 5 fps and a DS of 2.5 fps that i think is good but as temps go up so does vel. And ES most of my shooting will be in the 60 to 85 degree range by the way alt. is the same around 1000 feet above sea level. Over the entire temp spread i am getting an ES of 10 fps out of the retumbo but slow overall vel.. So is temp spread of 42 degrees causing a 39 fps ES to much to be used as an ELR load? Sorry for being so windy with this post but wanted to give as much detail as i could to get the most acc. Answes from you guys. If i can get you any other info let me know. Gun is a savage 110 fcp hs with a 27" tube 1 in 9 twist. Charge with retumbo is 89.3 and with the wc867 it is 105.7 (very full case) but no psi signs and smooth extract. Bullets are 300 gr SMK and berger 300 gr otm's. the 89.3 gr retumbo has impact on paper at 300 yards 9.5" below the 105.7 gr wc867. With the rifle 0 for the wc867 loads.
