What is the future of 6 Dasher?

Hey guys,

So this all started when I began to plan out a future build. Part of that process led me to reading up on some of the 6mm variants we all hear so much about these days. In particular, 6 Dasher and all the exposure and success it has seen on the PRS/NRL circuits. Seems like a great little round and a direction I’m interested in pursuing.

I’ve gathered there are two camps, weather you plan to use Norma brass which you can order, or forming your own Lapua brass from 6mmBR cases. Then there is talk of what free bore everyone is ending up with and what reamers were used etc.

After falling down the rabbit hole a bit, I’m left wondering what y’all might have heard or been made aware of in regards to the future of this round such as SAAMI standardization, wider brass availability etc.

Aside from that build project previously mentioned, I noticed PVA offers a 6 Dasher pre fit for the RPR however, you have the option to choose from a Norma or Lapua chamber. The RPR is what I shoot currently and to have it barreled in 6 Dasher sounds like fun as long as I could get it to run reliably.

Thanks all.

This is just my opinion, I believe all brass used in the Dasher comes from Europe today. so whether saami adapts it or not, it doesn't make it any more or less viable. Rumor was alpha was going to enter the market, last I had heard it is on hold. I thought another American mfg'r was going to offer a 6BR case.
I also think the 6 BRA is slowly replacing the Dasher as the favored 1K benchrest case of choice, still doesn't mean the Dasher is going away. Even if top prs shooters adapt a new flavor, you still have a whole crop of people wanting to dabble in it, we all learn as we go.
As for the Norma chamber compared to a Lapua chamber, it's all in neck length. Lapua made quite a name for themselves with long neck cases such as the 6BR and 6.5x47, the Dasher was just a by product of it with a short neck that happened to work fantastic. Now Norma comes along and adds the neck length back with a few stipulations, (reamers). And I'm sure it will work.
I also believe Norma brass out of the box is of higher quality in general over Lapua brass, but one question. When has anyone ever stated that Norma brass has the longevity of Lapua brass? It's always in the primer pocket area, and maybe the small pocket stuff stands up better. I have not heard that argument yet.
Dasher is not going anywhere for now, have fun with yours. Brass, either way is readily available.

Since the 6's are the flavor of the month ( I own a couple ) you will always see off shoots
and experimentation with it. This is good and bad, the good is maybe a better mouse trap
will come out in the end, the bad is way too many choices right now. Give it a year or so
and let the dust settle. Their will be a couple of really good choices in the end.
The Dasher is and always will be a great choice, it just doesn't have factory help
like the 6 Creedmoor got. I don't want what everyone else has, but I don't want
to hunt for dies or brass ( examples ) for it either.
It's still a really great time right now to be a shooter...

I want the most barrel life I can get out of a 6mm. Seems like 6 Dasher goes a little over 2000, 6BRAI about 2500, and 6BR about 3000. So for now I chose 6mmBR but at half life I think I'll have it setback to 6BRA.

From what I've read there's a node for 105's at around 2920-2940 fps which is a medium load in 6 BRAI, that's a good place to be for my purposes, with lower recoil in mind. My 6mmBR is short of that velocity in a 26" in the high node by last chronoing of 2895 fps, but the low node is about 2830 fps.

Well 6 BRAI is easy to form since there is a slight crush fit by .004" on the shoulder of virgin brass and will fireform well on the first firing, as well as less chance of split cases.

I almost went Norma 6 Dasher but at the time they made the rim thicker, changed it later, then shortly after that Bullets.com went out of business. Kinda quenched my enthusiasm.

Still get excited thinking about a 25 Dasher with 131 Blackjacks using Norma Dasher brass. I do like the longer neck on the Norma Dasher brass.

In that 2 yr period, others will surface, it will never come down to a couple GOOD choices. Comparing Hornady's success with the creed case to basically a wildcat isn't fair one. Americans have always been able to market themselves and their products better than any others. And the creed case rose to fame at a critical time, more LR shooters jumping on board boosting the popularity.
Does the European CIP recognize the Dasher as a case? If not, Norma brass cannot be sold in Europe, their regulations are way more stringent than ours. I just do not know.
I'd wager Lapua 6BR brass is close to the top of it's US import as for popularity. With so many offshoots derived from the BR case, I think it would be tough to narrow down which sub version you would want to support. 6BRA, 6 Dasher, 6 BRX, 6 BRXD, and so on, when forming our own versions from the case is relatively easy. It would be tough to support something when the direction has not yet been decided.

I"ve purchased my Norma brass, now waiting for my super 6 action and mags, plus i've got a smith lined up that will chamber the barrel to fit the Norma brass out of the box. PTG makes the reamer and Grizzly Industry sells it. Looking forward to see how this all works. Building a rifle for the granddaughters to shoot
