What is the military using for Powder in the 556/223 ammo have some LC 10 223/556 thinking of pulling the 55 gr bullet and seating a 77 MK BUT am hesitant as not sure of the powder burn rate OR should i just dump dump the powder and use Verget
Re: What Is the Military Using In 556/223 AmmoWhat is
like all the other post about what company is using what powder, its a bulk (or whatever you want to call it) type that isn't available to the general public (i'm guessing cause they get the shit by the ton) If I were you, i would shoot the stuf you have, and then reload the brass.... it doesn't make anysense to pull the bullet, dump the powder, re-drop, re-seat, and then fire. you have the ammo in front of you... shoot it.

Think I'll just load up some test rounds from some LC 09 cases i have in my loading room just take a little longer as my Dillon 550 is not set up 223 yet
Re: What Is the Military Using In 556/223 AmmoWhat is
WC844 (cross reference H335) is commonly believed to be used in Military 5.56 ammo. However there is absolutely NO way to be 100% sure. As such I would highly recommend you change the powder to something known with loading data. Simply changing out the bullet with the same powder and charge is just asking to cause your rifle and/or yourself some serious harm.
P.S. This should have been posted in the reloading forum...

This used to be done a lot. It was nick named the Mexican Match. However after truly testing the results down range it was determined to be a waste of time. Did they gain better performance using the SMK's over the 55 ball, yes. Was it better than coming up with a load for the SMK's, NO! The time and energy put into pulling and seating bullets is better spent loading a purposed match round for your gun.
BTW
Bullet: Sierra Match King 77gr BTHP
Powder: 25.0gr Hodgdon Varget
Primer: CCI #BR4
Brass: LC
Trim: 1.755
Seated: Mag Length
Barrel: 18" WOA SPR w/ Wylde chamber
Twist: 1x7
Velocity: 2721

Mexican match was very common pulling a 173 grain FMJBT Supposedly match bullet head and stuffing in a 168 grain SMK in .308 or 62 gr Green tip and replacing it with a 69 SMK. This is NOT THE SAME as pulling 55 bullet from ball ammunition (loaded at an unknown pressure, some M-193 is hotter than others) and replacing it with a 77 grain bullet which is 22 GRAINS HEAVIER. This does not sound like a safe practice.
I recommend you shoot the ball ammunition and reload the cases. If you are determined to replace the bullet look at a 55 grain or lighter bullet, like the 53 gr BTHP Sierra. No sense in damaging your rifle and/or yourself.
