What is type of "fill" for a McMillan stock?

I cannot find a description of the differences between the types of fill offered in McMillan stocks. Will someone please describe the Standard, Magnum, and Sniper fill? I don't see that information on the McMillan site, even though the fill is an option on the order form.

A quick call to MCM would answer all your questions as well. They have excellent customer service. If you are ordering a stock, I would take the time to order it over the phone. MCM will take the time and ask the questions to make sure you get the stock you want.

Thanks for the link. Instead of calling McM while I'm just seeking knowledge and kicking tires, I contacted a board member who I thought was connected to McMillan, but got no answer.

I'd also like to know a little more about the technical aspects of the fill. I gather it is fiberglass or similar material. Are the heavier fills made of denser material, or is it simply that more of the stock is filled?

To my knowledge its the same material just more or less of it. McM has always been very helpful and courteous, even when I was just kicking the tires. I would not expect to her from them on the weekend. Dick Davis has been good at answering questions for me. He is a member of the hide, but I wouldn't expect him to get online on the weekends either. If you google "what is McMillan sniper fill" or something similar you will find some good information on this and other sites. I still think your best bet is to go straight to the source and call McMillan on Monday.

Yea the wieght difference is achieved from a different density of material. And not only that, but it is molded into the stock in a certain area to distribute wieght.

Interesting thing is, my sniper fill USMC A4 is lighter than my other A4 cut for a regular 700 with varmint barrel. The widend barrel channel and bigger dbm cut out took alot of wieght off the USMC stock

Sniper fill is only 6 oz. heavier than standard fill. I have ordered several with solid glass fill in the butt and that itself added 1lb to the stock.

Wrenchhead raises an important point to consider: weight distribution of your completed rifle. In my early years I always used 100% (solid chopped fiberglass) from butt to foreend tip. Makes for good shooting off a pedestal rest; not so good (bbl heavy) for standing or kneeling shots---esp when using a Mcm SR-90 27" 40xb. The beauty of solid fill is that it can be strategically removed in small amounts from the foreend with an end mill to change the balance point of your weapon. A Mcm a3 solid fill 20" mtu s700 or Fnspr is my current upper weight limit esp in suppressed mode. Hope this helps.
