What kind of accuracy could I expect from Steyr ?

I am looking at a Steyr SSG 08 in .308.

Is this is good, accurate rifle, or just an expensive one?

Assuming I do my part, anyway.

Got the .308, and the .338.

You won't find much love for them here, but in my experience they are good, accurate and expensive.

My .308 with FGMM 175 and good hand loads: .5 Min- 5 shot groups all day, the most consistent precision rifle I own.

As much as I like my Savages...the Steyrs are just awesome rifles. Savages does not hold a candle to Steyr in terms of build quality or looks/function. I had a rare Steyr with McMillan stock that shot lights out. You won't regret buying a Steyr.

Seen a couple come to schools and they are about as accurate as anything out there. They are certainly in TRG and AI territory as far as accuracy and quality.

As LCJones said above, there's not a lot of them here on the 'hide. That doesn't make them undesireable... I'd own one in a heartbeat.

You probably won't find a lot of accessories for them, but they don't need much either.

You won't be disappointed if that's what you want!

Steyr is the Lapua of hammer forged barrels - no one comes close.

1. it's capable of shooting 1moa groups with good ammo (e.g.lapua scenar)
2. nice barrel. comes with muzzle brake and a bipod which is of course an advantage.
3. nice adjustable stock.
4. fair trigger.

however for this money there is too much plastic on it. I hate the plastic mag. IMHO if I had to choose again I would rather go with Savage 10 BA and spend the rest on ammo.

I disagree- it WAS 40 years ago. Now they manufacture some of their barrels in Croatia because it comes cheaper. Everybody os cutting corners, so Don't be surprised if it impacts the overall quality. Why people in the US envy a Steyr? I don't get it.

First time I hear or read about it. Could you be more specific and substantiate your assertion : which Steyr Mannlicher barrels are made in Croatia ?

e.g. ProHunter Heavy Barrel. Speak to Austrian hunters, you will find out more about some quality control issues at Steyr. They still manufacture nice rifles though. But- go to Wiener Neustadt, speak to some people, you will find out more. I just got a whisper they are about to release a new semi-auto rifle this year.

I've owned 4 SSG's and they were all as accurate as any rifle I've ever shot. They perform well with Factory Match ammo and even better with reloads. I do have to say though, that I have limited experience with the newer variation which I believe uses a different bolt called the SBS (Safety Bolt System). My experience with that bolt was in a rifle called the SBS Tactical. Basically an SSG04 in a hunting style stock with the option of adding a magazine extender for a 10 round Mag. It was also extremely accurate but I didn't like the stock.

FWIW, WTF is up with people always comparing Salvage to the "Quality" rifles out there?

I use a Steyr SSG PII in .308 in 600 and 1000 yard F-Class Tactical Rifle matches near the Gulf in Texas. The only thing special I did to the rifle was put it in a McMillan stock. Using 175 gr. Sierra Match King and 45 gr. of Varget it will shoot consistently 94%. That is hitting a 10 ring (10 inch circle) at 1000 yards 94% of the time with Texas wind. I want to justify blowing more money on a custom rifle but when my SSG shoots under .40 MOA, but why should I?

The down side is that accessories are few and the plastic trigger guard/ mag well will break apart if it is in contact with solvent. Also if I ever manage to shoot out the barrel (est. 6,000 to 24,000 rounds) to change barrel's out is difficult for most gun smiths and will cost extra.

last weekend i was at a local shooting range here in austria
i shot a little fun competition with 3 older guys in their 60s and 70s that are probably shooting and reloading since 30 years

two of them were schooting steyr sbs hunting rifles, one in 243 win and one in 6x51 atzl
one had a blaser r93 in 222 rem.
i myself used a rifle with a heavy contoured custom barrel in 6,5x47 that usually holds 0,5 moa

we shot 100 meters standing, and supported 200 and 250 meters four times 2 shots for each distance .
i turned out 3rd, loosing against the two guys with sporter barreled steyrs.

so at least these 2 guys had outstanding steyr guns

i heared the rumor aswell that steyr moved their hammer forging machines to kroatia, cheaping out on loans
but the machines are still the same ones

that beeing sayed, my bare stock savage 10 PC in 223 also holds an average of 0,6 MOA

I have a Steyr SSG04 in .308. It is a 0.5MOA all day every day. I have no complaints on the rifle at all. Well one, the magazines are $80 a pop.

I had a Steyr SSG 69 PIIK .308 that was incredibly accurate. It was easily 3/8 MOA with FGMM. I was very successfully engaging my 18" AR500 targets all the way out to 1,090 yds.

The negative part was the plastic triggerguard and magwell. After mine cracked all to pieces for the 3rd time I decided rather than order a replacement and fix it yet again, to sell it. Kind of sad to see it go as it was the rifle I started long range precision shooting. I put 4,975 rounds through it prior to selling. It never lost even a fraction of an MOA in accuracy while I owned it.

Also had an SSG 08 in .300 Win Mag and it was even more accurate. However, a friend of mine wanted it so much he offered to pay me $500 over what I paid for it so I sold it. I believe Steyr makes excellent rifles. I bore scoped both of mine and the bores on these rifles are impeccable looking through the bore scope. I've seen some custom aftermarket hand lapped barrels that did not look as good as the Steyr factory barrels.

I have an SSG08 in 300 win mag. Most accurate rifle I've ever owned. Helped me win the Bang Steel Challenge in Virgina a couple of weeks ago, with factory Black Hills ammo. Only two of us were able to hit both steel plates at 1005. Thanks to my SSG08, I was one of the two. If you get it, and it comes with the Versapod bipod, throw it in the trash and get a Harris or Atlas. Your other option is to get the bipod off the Steyr HS-50, which is even better and fits directly on the SSG08. You won't regret it one bit.

As long Steyr presses their barrels and rebarrel costs a fortune and their price is what it is they are simply not interesting to me as there are better choices out there for same or less money with same or better accuracy.

Still that does not change the fact that SSG69 is one sexy rifle....

It's true that the OP could probably do just as well with a Savage or Tikka or Remington or maybe a dozen others if you didn't like my example. I'm with jtrax, a lot of plastic on those guns. Also just because they are the best hammer forged barrel I'd still rather have a Savage button rifled barrel.

I might be fairly new to the hide but I'm not new to custom rifles or longe range precision shooting. And for my money I just don't think they are all that. Of course if that swirly contour in the barrel does it for you go for it. The OP asked for advice and I gave mine. Remember it's a subjective question. There are no wrong answers. I'm not sure what makes your opinion such hot shit

If you haven't owned one, your opinion is considerably less valuable. They are not wo issue but were way ahead of their time (1969 ) and have by far been the most accurate factory rifles I've owned.

Was at a competition and the steyr was having multiple issues. First those plastic mags are junk. The shooter had them pop out during firing. He also ha a very hard time putting them in so they would stay. The other issue he had was the bolt. Seemed sticking and not smooth. He seemed advanced enough to know how to run the bolt. I took pictures and video of the competition, but by far the steyr ha it's share of issues. Just my .02! The issues where bad enough and consistent enough for me to really watch him

I agree that the SSG69 rotary mags are probably one of the most problematic mags ever designed. The newer ones used on the SSG04-08, Scout and Pro Hunters are probably some of the best designed ever and have always functioned flawlessly in all my rifles.

Had a mannlicher 308 that I got in a trade. Nice short length but heavy to be a real handy rifle. Had pretty wood. Very picky with load I suppose from the full length stock. I'm not saying that they are crap. I'm just saying that for the money give me a Colt Sauer any day. There are many more choices now.

Had a steyr elite in 308 that was a fantastic rifle. Very well built, very accurate and had some very unique features

I understand the concerns about steyrs showing up in Iraq but what about the weapons the USA gave the Afghans in the 80's? Also I dont see it stopping anyone owning an Ak or even a mauser.

My feelings as well. I bought my first Steyr, a SSG69, in 1984 at a US Navy base on Sicily. Only sold it around 1996 because I also had a SSG PII. I bought the PII in 1985 in Germany and still have it to this day. Sure I now only use the pricey 10-rounders, and I added their Picatinny rail with a Nightforce a couple of years ago. Silly me did jump onto the pop culture bandwagon and added a Harris bipod, but I am now back to the Parker Hale one I picked up in the late 80's.

BTW, I am really surprised (but, maybe not really given today's "society") that men jump into a thread they have no interest in just to trash what others like and want to discuss.

BTW. I have shot a Steyr SSG 04 in a Mcmillan stock. It was nice but I would still go Tikka and save some dough.

I'm on them same boat, with the same setup. The SSG08 is the killing machine that I use for ELR hunting. Accuracy, ergonomics, and robustness is tier 1, on par and above the TRG and AI offerings IMHO. Did same as you, got rid of the Versa Pod and went directly to the Fortmeier bipod. Which is the make that comes with the .338 Lapua and the HS-50 model.
