What "kind" of Indian are you???
In the early 90's, a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer came to work in our quality department for a short time. He was American Indian. As I got to know him better, I was curious about his heritage but didn't know quite how to ask him. Finally, I decided on, "what tribe are you from?"
He answered, "Ojibwe (Chippewa) from Wisconsin." Then he had a good chuckle before saying that he was glad that I didn't ask what "kind" of Indian he was. Seems that was common most of his Navy life. He told me that he had grown tired of it and came up with a story to delfect the question. His short, sweet story was:
"I come from a small tribe of 500 in Indiana. We were born without nipples. They call us the Indiannippleless 500."
