What model SAKO is this?

I received a "hand me down" sako .222 and am a little unsure of the actual model. It just says SAKO Riihimaki on the side of the receiver along with the 5 digit serial number and a couple stamps of some sort. I looked on the sako web site and don't see that as a model listed under their old models section. I'm sure pics would help and I can figure that out if people need it. I'm just curious about what I've got here. I should add, it's a bolt with a three round detachable mag. The mag release is inside the front side of the trigger guard. Thanks.

It sounds like a very old model, the Sako Model L46 Vixen introduced in 1951 and discontinued in 1963, it was made with a 3 round detachable magazine. Post some pictures and I'll tell you for sure.

Its a very nice rifle.

Thanks. From searching their site that was the closest I could guess but still really had no Idea. Unfortunately there is some stock damage due to a house fire about thirty plus years ago. It's been sanded out and refinished but can still be scene quite clearly. I'll see if I can figure out how to post some pics. It certainly has always shot well.

Re: What model SAKO is this?

I am pretty sure you have a model L46, manufactured from 1946 thru 1962. The later model L461 "Vixen" does not have a detachable magazine. If the 5 digit serial number is 57000 or less, the gun was built before the Vixen model.

To the best of my knowledge, the detachable mag was on the older model. Yours should also have a different type of safety. Both of those features were changed on the "newer" Vixen. I have a couple vixen's. They're nice accurate lightweight rifles.

Congrats on a nice rifle.
