I'm having a hunting rifle built (LRI group buy). I'm having the barrel threaded and while it's getting worked on I might as well have a brake installed and timed by a pro. It's a rem 700 in 300wm with a #3 Bartlien barrel. Recoil isnt a huge issue, and I'm not sure if I will even hunt with the brake on. So it comes down to looks. I don't want a Boss style brake. I would like something along the lines of the APA little bastard, or a Kirby pain killer, but I'm not sure if the little bastard can be turned down enough for a clean look, and I'm not sure if the Kirby would look decent. Any thoughts by someone who has experience with a setup like i have described, and any suggestions for another brand if ones better suited would be great.

    Thanks

Function and looks... APA Fat or Little Bastard OR Badger Thruster.

APA recommends a 0.850" diameter muzzle or larger and that you don't turn down the Fat Bastard. The Little Bastard can be turned down to a minimum of 0.85" but it's recommended to be at least 0.90"
You're going to have the same type of specs for the Thruster.

Unfortunately with a #3 contour the above brakes are not going to look great with having a 0.670" muzzle...you might have to consider a radial brake like what was suggested above if you want something that will match your contour.

Thats what I was afraid of. I thought the slab side might look alright even if it wasnt of a similar contour. I'm not a fan of the radial brakes and looking at the muzzle flash throught the scope in low light. The only reason I'm having a brake installed on this rifle, is for my boy when he gets older as a possible elk rifle for him to use.
If I went the route of the radial, would it need to be timed?

Thanks eastbay, Do you have experience with this brake, and if so do you like it?
Yeah, I have experience with the Standard vias on my larger contour barrels, and the micro on a rem700 30-06 with a sporter contour and can't complain. I've used several breaks in the past, but think I found the one to get for all my future builds for now on.

I have a VAIS on my 7mm SAUM Model 7.

I just had one made for my new Bartlein Heavy Varmint profile barrel. Ron Bartlett does it right, and I love the VAIS.

It isn't a good choice for prone work in a dusty environment, since it isn't timed, and has ports around the entire circumference of the brake.

But it's a great brake otherwise. Like the post above says, I'll buy VAIS from now on, especially since I don't do much prone shooting.

If the LRI brake looks like the one in the picture Chad posted in the group buy section I'm going to kick myself in the ass, because that looks awesome. It's too late though because I have already purchased a Vias, and it's on the way.

I recently installed a Harrells brake on my factory M700 in 7mm Mag and quite pleased with the results. Very nice recoil reduction makes the light sporter much pleasurable to shoot. They come in many thread sizes and ss or steel. I went with a 1/2-28 x 3/4" with a .700 tenon. They are fresh out of the CNC, so each one will need fit properly. Best part of a Harrells brake is, they run $30 shipped! Works just as good as any other radial brake out there.
