What rifle for Kiddo shooting NRL22 matches?

OK here we go. A little history first. My 11yo and 9yo are shooting prone matches with a 6mm Dasher. The 11yo has expressed interest in PRS matches. Its a little tough for him to manipulate his Dasher on barricades at the moment ( a little heavy). That said we talked about trying out the NRL22 matches first before we jump into a prs match this early.

What kind of accuracy will we need for a NRL22 match? What are our options on rifles in the sub $800 range? His Length of Pull is 12.5-.75" at the moment. We don't have a donor rifle, we will be starting from scratch. I would like to have something at least similar to his match rifle stock wise, which is a mcmillan A5.

I don't mind buying used. I would prefer actually to buy a better built used gun and saving a little jingle on custom work. I just don't really know where to start. Or for that matter what kind of accuracy we really need.

CZ 455 or the new 457

You can get the Tacticool model with the Boyds stock or get the VPT with the Manners T4A.

I really wanted a VPT until I began researching .22’s and came across Vudoo Gun works. I splurged and don’t regret it one bit but a CZ will work just fine for a lot less money.

My son is 10 and he is shooting a Ruger Precision Rimfire in NRL22 matches. The adjustable stock adjusts to the perfect size for him. He is about the same size as your son it sounds like. At least that have about the same LOP. We took the stock rifle and put a 6-24 Athlon Midas TAC on it and it has been working great. The Midas is a really nice scope but not overboard for a kid or a 22 and most of all it is fairly light. Originally I had a different optic for his rifle but it was about 10oz heavier which is a big difference for a 10yo. With good ammo the rifle will shoot sub MOA at 100 yards and with positional shooting that is more than accurate enough. In that type of shooting the weak link will always be the shooter and the stability of their positions. Another advantage is after market parts are available for the Ruger and easy to change out yourself. At around $400 for a complete rifle I couldn’t have built anything for that price. I will add getting the proper LOP was a pretty big deal for positional shooting. The fact that the rifle can adjust and grow with him was another selling point for me.

The Ruger precision rimfire would be a good option. The adjustable ergonomics, weight, and balance should be great for kids.

Hopefully Ruger's manufacturing quality is improving as the platform is aging. My first gun was sent back due to accuracy and weak ejection issues. They installed a new barrel and bolt and the gun shoots 1/2" at 50 with SK Std+, very close to MOA at 100, 10" round steel at 300 is no problem.

I have a Ruger American Target in .17HMR that shoots very well also, but the first gun was sent back and they sent me a new gun. The stock Ruger triggers are decent and can be easily modified. Both of mine are under 2lbs.

CZ is also a good choice and if you hit the CZ Barrel Lottery they can be exceptionally accurate. The new Tikka T1X appears to have very good potential.

My 7 year old loves her RPR rimfire, and the quick adjustments make it fun for me as well.

The bolt was/is tight, but it has smoothed out with some help from a dremmel/polish,

The ejection was iffy because the spring holding the shell against the ejector wasn’t aligned the right way, so i fixed it

If you are interested in a CZ 455 "Tacticool" with YoDave trigger kit in an MDT LSS-22 chassis with Magpul PRS buttstock, I will be putting mine on the market in the next couple of weeks. I can sell it with the chassis or the original Boyd stock or both. It's a consistent 0.5-0.6" performer at 50 yards with the old Lapua-produced Wolf Match Extra (SK Rifle Match). Slightly, just slightly, less consistent with CCI SV.

The optic in the photo is a Gen-2 Vortex Viper PST 3-15x55 in Vortex/Seekins rings on a 20-MOA DIP rail. I'm quite willing to sell it all as a package deal, but the scope is MOA and SFP - a double whammy for many people here.

PM me for more info.

Classic- you are sick as the rest of us.. A $350 RPR rimfire with a $500 CKYE pod!

Nice work on getting your kids out there... it will be a flash and your shooting buddies will be off to college—- great photos

Thanks, the ckye-pod is mine, but she is trying to steal it because the Harris is “stupid” and can’t go the that perfect height that she needs

My son has had a little bit of a hard time cycling a bolt on a RPR / and it had ejection problems (using a friends RPR) so I ruled that out even though it seemed an "easy button"

I went another route for him https://www.snipershide.com/shooting/threads/sons-nrl-22-build.6918274/

Which ever way you go, make sure the LOP can match the kid, weight and balance are important too but LOP is most critical for youths IMO(on his chassis I made a shorter than "pistol length" solid buffer tube to make sure it was short enough)...800 ish you could get a CZ and a choice of several chassis.

So what kind of accuracy do we really need to compete in a NRL22 match.

From the NRL22 rules website, looks like 1" is the smallest target other than the "know your limits" rack which starts at 1/4" and goes up to 1". The KYL is usually 50 yards or less. So something that will shoot 1" at 100 yards will suffice. https://nrl22.org/about/rules/ :

The local monthly course of fire will utilize the NRL22 18/19 Target Package so that all 5 courses of fire can occur at the same time by different squads and not utilize the same target. The NRL22 18/19 target package is: 1/4”, ½”, ¾”, 1” KYL Targets, 1″, 2x 1 ½”, 2x 2”, 2x 2 ½” 2x 3”, 4”, 5” and 6” circles all constructed of ¼” AR 500 steel, along with 10 target hangers all constructed of 3/16” AR 500 steel. The NRL22 will sell a Standard Target Package Expansion to upgrade last season’s Standard Target Package to the 18/19 Target Package for $79.99. The Standard Target Package Expansion is: 1 ½”, 2”, 2 ½”, and 3” circles and 2 double target hangers all constructed of AR 500 Steel.

Based on what I have found a lot comes down to your ammo. I went through 6 different types and several lots of ammo before I found one that shot really well. When I found that lot though it shot really really well. If you find a good lot do yourself a favor and buy a case if you can. I hit the CCI lottery a long time ago and found some CCI SV that was amazing. Since I used the last of that lot I haven’t found any that comes close though. In general I have found that most SK and the mid priced Eley shoot well in my rifle and my sons. Eley Edge is my ammo of choice right now though. I keep some decent CCI SV for pratice inside 100 yards and use my Eley for matches.
