I used to have a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44mm scope, but I would like to upgrade to something with better glass. I'm ready to buy and am looking at a VX-3 6.5-20x50mm with Varmint Reticle (for hold overs) and 30mm tube for $900 or a VX-3 8.5-25x50mm (same reticle and 30mm tube) for $970. The gun it will go on is a Remington 700 with 26" heavy barrel, McRees Precision chassis, EGW 20 MOA base, 308 Winchester. My goal is to shoot precision competition and have the ability to reach 1000 yards. Which scope would you with between the two I have listed or suggest another for less than $1000.

Golden you need not be looking at a varmint reticle for holdover with a .308, they don't go together. I might suggest looking at a tactical scope with either MOA/MOA or mil/mil set up. You need your adjustments and reticle to match up so you can have accurate adjustments. There are many scopes to choose from but start with the basics of how they work then find what matches your pocket book. A nightforce is one of many that will serve you well, but again there are many out there

It is going to be hard to stay under a $1000 when looking to upgrade glass. the Mark 4 from leupold is a step up as well but you have to pay for it. I agree with above that you should be looking into a mil/mil or moa/moa system for "holdovers." Do some research on the SFP vs FFP reticles and that will help when you start looking around.

One really good reason to buy a Leupold-they have been here a long time, their lifetime warranty is the Gold standard. I just read a post on this board, a guy just got the run a round, on a Zeiss ($3000.00) scope, the majority of zeiss stock was purchased by another company, they may not even stay in the scope business. When buying optics, keep in mind the company that mfg the thing. God forbid you ever need a repair, but if you do......just saying.
