I am going to be getting a tikka left hand stainless 300 win mag in the next year or so (first centerfire bolt gun). I have a Leopold mark ar 3-9x40 with the mil dot reticle currently sitting on my ar that could move over while saving up for a better scope (looking at putting a vortex strikefire on my ar).

What I am asking is what magnification range should I start looking at that covers the 300 win mags range? I want to get into some longer range stuff and also hunting. I'm out in northern utah.

    Specific scope recommendations welcome.

Interested in ffp only, less than $2k, reticle capable of doping and measuring range (mil dot or other i don't care), and no mismatch between turrets and reticle.

If you can wait, the new Vortex PST II 5-25x50 might be worth it and still keep the weight down for a tactical/hunter rig. A 3-15 should also be sufficient but I prefer a little more magnification. The Bushnell Elite Tactical LRTSi or LRHSi 4.5-18x44 might be a good option as well. These are options that are under 32oz, should you not mind something heavier it would open up a few more possibilities.

and WTF are you getting a 300WM? on your budget, consider a Tikka T3x Varmint .223 and shoot bulk Wolf Gold/American Eagle $0.30/rd ammo out of it for a few thousand rounds at targets within 400 before moving to a .308/6.5

at the budget level you're talking about... you'll have a 300winmag to molest and look at... but won't be able to actually shoot it

IMO: good glass, good rings, decent gun, decent ammo; then spend some on training and lots more on ammo

ammunition is to guns what gas is to motorsports. if you can't afford to feed the beast, it'll sit in the garage

get a tool you can afford to run long and run often, then run it hard to the best of your ability and enjoy using it

I'd rather have a .22LR I can shoot all day and multiple times a week than a .338 Lapua I shoot 4x a year and cringe at the thought of the cost

Weight I don't care about as much, just have to keep everything under 16lbs if I ever want to do anything in Idaho.

Will have to look at those options for my ar. Originally wanted the strikefire because it comes in a green dot. My dad has an aimpoint pro on his ar. He hasn't used it much.

If you don't care about weight, the gen 2 razor 3-18 can be had for under $2k and once in a while if you check the PX you can find the 4.5-27 for under $2k. That would give you enough travel and mag range to do anything you want with a 300WM.
To be honest, I think the 4.5-27 would be able to take advantage of just about any big caliber (300WM, 300NM, 338, etc.) with it's pretty large amount of elevation and mag range.

    Covert is as Covert does.

Plenty of good feedback on the scout site.

Pineoak the $2k is for the price of the scope. Also my dad is in Houston and I'm in the greater salt lake city area.

I want 300 win mag because I want to eventually get up to hunting elk and shooting long range. Most likely the biggest caliber ill ever own. I like to buy my guns once the way I want them and not sell. Hence why my ar is the way it is. Built from parts myself.

This is my ar as it is currently set up
    POF lower
    Timney skeletonized trigger
Stag left handed upper (and other internal parts)
    Kns precision pins
White oak armament 18"spr rifle length 223wylde barrel
    Rainier arms compensator
    Command arms grip
    Noveske 60° throw selector
    Midwest 2 piece rail
    Weaver rings
    Leupold mark ar 3-9×40 mildot
    Larue qd bipod adapter
    Harris bipod
    Magpul ubr stock
    Magpul mags
Magpul mbus's on left hand side
    Magpul sling
    Magpul front qd sling thing
    22lr conversion kit as well.

Good advice. The 3-18x Razor II would work very well and fall in your price range. It has very clear glass and plenty of power and elevation.

I did research everything for my ar. All in all I think I built it for $1500. It started off with lpk trigger and railed gas block. Trigger sucked, gas block looked horrible.
