What Size Flash Hole ?

Re: What Size Flash Hole ?

Sinclair says standard flash holes are .080 for everything but PPC and Lapua Grendel brass (maybe other BR brass ??) which is around .062. There is some variation ; that is why I use a flash hole deburring tool to uniform flash hole id and get rid of burr on the inside of the case.

Re: What Size Flash Hole ?

thanks for the tip on Sinclairs they have a tool very similar to one i made several years ago, the difference is that i use the one i made in a RCBS primer pocket swaging die, and it has a taper so that the inside of the flash hole looks like a funnel, this inside 45 degree taper distributes the flash more evenly, something i learned from building muzzle loaders. the velocities are more consistent and somewhat higher than a standard unburred flash hole.

i am thinking about making one for my RCBS case trimmer for nonmilitary brass, my only draw back is that it will remove brass, whereas the swaging tool impresses the metal. i also use the .080" F.H. hole, for 5.56mm NATO which is the only caliber i reload for..., except of course my .499LWR that also uses the .080" flash hole and inside taper.

Re: What Size Flash Hole ?

Great
The one at sinclair has a seater in the priming pocket then the reamer bores the id of the hole from the base up " the opposite of the one youhave pictured."

I use lapua brass only and this is bored not punched so there is not the issue with the internal volcano due to the punching process.

Good luck
