What to do with inventory of rifles?

My Dad passed away in May of '15 and he left behind several rifles with most being custom. Between his rifles and mine, I have been considering doing an inventory and determining what route I would like to go to create a good array of rifles for the future, especially considering I have two young sons.

I am thinking it would be best to have calibers ranging from smaller to larger that can all be hunted with and then a good practice shooter. What I would like to do is list the rifles below and have ya'll look at them and tell me your thoughts on what you would leave as is and what you would convert. If converting, please be specific (caliber, size barrel, stock, etc.). FYI I prefer calibers that I can easily find ammo for and not have to hand load for. My Dad had a couple that I know are good rounds, but I would most likely convert to something else due to ammo availability.

I would appreciate your input, ideas, and recommendations. Thanks.

1. Rem 700 LA, 280AI, Douglas barrel (not sure on contour but looks to be a heavy sporter; maybe a #3), HS Precision stock. Would most likely convert this to another caliber. Ideas? Thoughts?

2. Rem 700, 300wsm, Douglas barrel (not sure on contour but looks to be a heavy sporter; maybe a #3), HS Precision thumbhole stock. Keeping this one as is.

3. Predator action, 6.8wsm, Douglas barrel (not sure on contour but looks to be a heavy sporter; maybe a #3), Laminate thumbhole stock. Will convert this one to another caliber. Thought about maybe 6.5 creedmoor. Thoughts...other suggestions? My Dad had this on e altered a couple of times. He never could get it shooting the way he wanted and was thinking about altering it before he passed away.

4. Rem 700, .223, XCR Tactical. Keep as is or change? Ideas? My Dad bought this one on a whim, but never shot it.

5. Rem 700 5R, .223, stock Rem 5R rifle. Keep as is or change? Thoughts? This one is mine and may alter.

6. Rem 700 SA, .308, Hart barrel #5, HS Precision thumbhole stock. Keeping this one as is. This one is actually mine I had built.

7. Rem Model 7, 6mm, Douglas barrel (not sure on contour but looks to be a heavy sporter; maybe a #3), Factory synthetic model seven stock. Thought about just putting this into an aftermarket stock, but there seems to be limited choices for the Rem Model Seven. I would prefer a thumbhole stock, but don't want to go overboard on costs either. This one was mine that I gave my Dad to alter as he saw fit. I actually discussed with him about changing out the stock before he passed away.

8. Rem Model 7, 6mm, Factory blue barrel and wood stock. Keeping this one as is. It was my first rifle given to me by my Dad. Killed my first deer with it and so has my oldest son.

9. FYI, if it makes any difference in how you analyze the above list of rifles.....in addition to these rifles, also have two Rock River AR15s. One is mine which is LAR-15 tactical carbine. The other was my Dad's which is like a LAR-15 varmint with a SS heavy barrel and fixed stock. Will most likely take his and put a adjustable butt stock, lighter barrel with quad rail hand guards. It's just heavier than I would like as is.

Any guns that come to me by inheritance are left unaltered. I like the sentiment of thinking about how it was used by its original owner. I'm a bit nostalgic like that though

I can understand the mindset of keeping them the way they are and some of them I will (specifically the ones I know he liked and used). I added some info in my OP to give some better back ground. The ones I noted that I am looking at altering are ones that he and I both discussed changing, but just never got far with it.

I recently had my father-in-law pass away and left over 500 pieces. First thing that I did was inventory them all on a spreadsheet with serial numbers, any noticeable features along with condition. After the list is compiled it was pretty easy to weed out what had to stay and what had to go. Sorry for your loss!

Okay so after looking thru them, I'll narrow it down some.

Number 7 on the list (Predator action, 6.8wsm, Douglas barrel (not sure on contour but looks to be a heavy sporter; maybe a #3), Laminate thumbhole stock) will get altered. Any recommendation on all around caliber? Thought about 6.5 creedmoor but not sure. With this action, I want something that is a solid all around caliber.

With already having a Rem 700 5R .223, would you keep the Rem 700 XCR tactical or opt for something else? Keep in mind I have 2 young sons (5 and 11 y/o) coming up. I can use the AR15s for .223s. Was thinking something like a .243.

Sounds like you've made up your mind on most of them. If you feel like you have too many rifles, you could always sell a few and maybe build a rifle you and your pops had talked about doing in the future. Sort of a commemorative build as if he was still with you.

You have two R700's in .223, and that sounds perfect for two sons that won't be young forever. I am all for keeping firearms as is when inherited, but don't be afraid to let one go if you don't feel any strong connection to it. It can fund some alterations to the other rifles.

I helped a friend with his dad's collection a few years ago. His dad had passed away with a collection/accumulation of about 60 guns and about 400 knives.

Inventory was the first step as you are doing. Second was to identify any with family importance and set them aside. Then we worked on values for the others since he did not want to keep them all. Next we determined the best way to sell those that he had decided to sell.

His dad had a lot from the 1950-60's where is was common to modify or customize anything you had. For that reason there were a lot of things that were too customized to have a broad interest.

If you're gonna mod the WSM and want a 6.5 make it a 4s. I bought a new rig with some of the money my old man left behind. Call it the daddius

I would deff keep the two .223's. I have a 20" 5R .223 and it's an absolute pleasure to shoot.

I would consider having the tubes trimmed back to 18-20" if they are not already. Aside from that- one for each son.

For the rest, myself, I'd be looking to consolidate to a more limited selection of chamberings. Otherwise, not much input for you.

Sorry for the loss of your dad! Mine passed 16 years ago and it still hurts every day.

I'd stick with the 280AI. It's a terrific all-around hunting round.

FWIW/JMO - maybe getting into handloading, which would be a great way to get past your inclination towards factory ammo available calibers, would be a terrific tribute to your dad. Not to mention a tradition to pass on to your young boys.

This is a great suggestion! Awesome caliber

My philosophy on the subject may be a little different. My father passed away a few years ago and while I will not alter any of the shotguns he left behind, I have gone through and modified a few guns so I will get some use out of them. I have his glock setup for three gun and his old savage is re barreled from 223 to 22-250AI. I wouldn't have got any use out of them in their stock form, so I modified accordingly. I see it as another chance to take my old man with me hunting or competing.
