I just purchased a 591R for my first "real" custom build. I was just wondering what everyones opinions where on what triggers are best suited for a tactical set up and light competition out to 1000? I want something obviously reliable but also crisp, light, consistent, etc... I have been looking at Jewell but am unsure if it is the best. Also, with the 591R having the side located bolt stop I am assuming I won't need that option on the trigger itself. I know these probably sound like really stupid questions to some, but I am not purposely cutting corners on the cost of this build so I want it to be right the first time. As always thanks for the input.

You are correct that you will not need a bolt release. Any trigger that fits a 700 will work. I have Jewell on two of my rifles and do not regret it. I played with a buddies Rifle Basics and liked it as well.

I spent a lot of time reading posts here and decided to go with the Jewell on my Surgeon build. Still waiting on my Krieger barrel and Sentinel stock from KMW to get started.

The Jewel is a good trigger and easily user adjustable.
The thing I have learned is that it's much more important to spend time learning YOUR trigger (regardless of make) and be able to read it's feel and know its break point. Doesn't matter if it's a tuned Remington or a Jewel. Knowing your trigger equals better shooting.

I used an old style Remington in my 591. I also like the Rifle basix version of that trigger. I use those 2 and a Jewell in my 3 bolt guns. All are nice triggers and would serve you well. I see no benefit in the feel of the trigger or my shooting between any of my triggers. The Jewell is easy to adjust and comes ready to use but a old style Remington tuned right is very nice. The Remington is of course much less expensive than a Jewell and most of us have one lying around. The Rifle Basix falls in the middle cost wise. If you plan on less than about 2# pull, roughly, the Remington is not your best choice because they are tough to tune any lower and be safe.

stay away from Rifle Basix, they are cast junk, I have had 3 of the trigger shoes break. Go with a Timney if you need the wider range of adjustability. Jewels get gunked up too easy in the field but they are great for bench use. I am a big fan of stock old style Remington triggers

+1 Thats good info. I have a few different triggers 1 Shilen and actually just yesterday picked my first custom rifle a Surgeon action and it has a Jewell installed. I think the Shilen I currently have is kinda over tuned maybe as it has the slightest amount of creep and some overtravel but the Jewell has no dectetable creep or overtravel. I give the edge to the Jewell but am perfectly fine with the Shilen too and my 308 is actually at the smith getting a Shilen installed due to the lower price point and the fact that its a huge improvement over the Junk x-mark factory trigger. I think youd be very happy with the Jewell but dont think the Shilen would dissapoint either. Good luck whichever you decide and if you can feel both to determine what you like best.

I appreciate all the input. I do have two "tuned" rem triggers and I am not going to say they are terrible but there is room for improvement. I can only speak from opinions but the rifle basix my buddy has, has similar issues to ADAM B. So I really wasn't considering one of those. Thanks to all and I'll keep it posted on the build.

After doing some research into it, I went with a Timney...better than a stock Remington but not as pricey or finicky as a Jewell. It seemed better suited to a more tactical-style rifle. I also found that a highly respected tactical rifle builder uses the Timney so that sealed the deal for me.

Hitman 321: Sounds like we are building similar rifles. As you know I chose the Surgeon 591 and I just talked with Terry (KMW) yesterday about the Sentinel Combat Stock and I plan to start the work order to him tonight. Mine is going to be a 6.5 build, whats yours?

I would also recommend a Huber trigger. I ran one of those for about a year shooting tactical rifle matches and liked it a lot. I currently have a Surgeon Scalpel with a Jewell and it also works well. Again, I have shot field rifle matches with it and zero issues. The biggest difference is one or two stage, pick which you like best.

LRK: This is my first custom build so I went with the .308 based on everything I've read here on the Hide over the last four months. Not sure how quickly I'll get into hand loading so I wanted the $/round on factory ammo as low as possible since I plan on shooting the bejesus out of it! Who's doing the build for you? I'm gonna build mine with Robert Gradous in GA, again based on what I read here and Lowlight's review last July. Can't friggin' wait!

I'm also a fan of the Timney. I like the Jewell as well and the break feels a touch cleaner to me but I don't like the narrow shoe and the smooth surface that it has.
